Drawing in science has roots all the way back to the time of Aristoteles and gained its modern status with the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Throughout history, drawing has played a central role in the communication and understanding of science. Drawing is recognized as an integral aspect of the nature of science, serving as a tool to enhance students’ observational skills and their ability to visualize scientific phenomena. However, as everyday school life becomes increasingly digital, drawing is often neglected in favor of other learning strategies. In the autumn of 2024, the Norwegian government published a white paper that emphasized that drawing should be used more in schools, for example as a method in interdisciplinary work.
The purpose of this master's study is to explore the student’s experiences with drawing in science and biology, as well as to investigate how drawing can contribute to learning. Qualitative data has been collected from 13 high school students in public and Waldorf school. In the public school, data collection took place in Biology 1 and science class, while in Waldorf school, data was collected from a science class with first year students in high school.
The results from the interviews show that students experience drawing as contributing to learning through several factors: variety, improved memory, increased understanding, concretization of abstract phenomena, enhanced motivation, and better understanding. The analysis shows that there are both challenges and opportunities associated with the use of drawing, and that the teacher plays a key role in promoting drawing. The main challenges associated with using drawing in teaching are linked to several factors such as limited time, how drawing is integrated into lessons, digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence, school culture, the so-called “drawing crisis”, as well as creativity in teaching with drawing. Furthermore, the discussion highlights that the potential benefits of drawing include creating variation in the school day, allowing students to engage their creative side, and establishing an interdisciplinary space between the arts and sciences. Additionally, drawing provides opportunities to spend more time visualizing phenomena that may be difficult to grasp, and it can diversify the assessments. The teacher also plays a crucial role in shaping students’ attitudes toward drawing.
This master’s thesis concludes with three conditions for drawing to contribute to learning: 1. There must be adequate access to drawing tools for both students and teachers. 2. Teachers must prioritize drawing as an integral part of their teaching practice. 3. Time spent on drawing must be recognized as a legitimate and learning-promoting academic practice
Moon Music: A Composition of Art and Science in Dialogue
Leonardo da Vinci's careful descriptions of the reflection of light by the moon inspired the author to compose a piece for choir on ways of perceiving the moon. In The Two Moons, Leonardo's words are contrasted with two additional texts: facts from a textbook on astronomy and a poem by Denise Levertov. The author discusses the challenge of transforming text and idea into musical sound. Further he discusses exploring natural phenomena by means of parallel efforts in art and science. </jats:p
undervisningen for å styrke elevenes læringsprosess i biologi.
observasjoner, altså hvordan elevene bygger opp forklaringene sine.
læringsprosess i biologi.
This master’s thesis examines the factors influencing students’ ability to write good
explanations of observations from biology experiments, as well as how teachers facilitate the
classroom teaching to enhance the students’ learnings process in biology. In this case study,
ten lab reports were analyzed with regards to how the students formulate explanations of
observations, that is, how they structure their explanations. The findings from the analysis of
the lab reports served as the basis for a focus group interview with three biology teachers. The
interview explored the teachers’ perspectives on explanations and how they facilitate
classroom teaching to support students in formulating good explanations, thereby
strengthening students’ learning process in biology. The findings further show that the
students’ ability to write good explanations of observations from biology experiments is
largely influenced by the teachers’ expectations and the teachers’ facilitation of the classroom
teaching. Teachers facilitate students’ learning using scaffolding. The lab manual is
highlighted as a useful way of scaffolding to ensure correct observations. Important ways of
scaffolding students’ formulation of explanations include follow-up questions, lab report
templates, and feedback, and these are primarily used at the individual level. Additionally, it is
important to provide students with ample opportunities to practice formulating explanations.
The rationale for the importance of facilitating classroom teaching for the formulation of
explanations of observations from biology experiments, is that both the formulation of
explanations and the reflection and learning that occur during the process are important for
the students’ learning process in biology. Based on the findings of the study, four conditions
for scaffolding students’ learning process through the formulation of good explanations of
observations from biology experiments have been formulated
The didactic approach of phenomenon-based teaching promotes inquiry learning, where a phenomenon is presented to students and they, along with their teacher, explore and discover the underlying scientific concept. The absence of this particular approach during our educational journey ignited our curiosity, which sparked our interest in exploring more about phenomenon- based teaching and everyday phenomena. We formulated the research question: How do teachers understand and use everyday phenomena in science education, and what opportunities and challenges does this approach present for students' learning of scientific concepts?
The research question was approached using a qualitative research approach, in which eight biology and science teachers from both Steiner Waldorf schools and public schools were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. The empirical data gathered from the interviews were then analyzed using inductive content analysis. The analysis resulted in four main categories: teachers' understanding of phenomenon-based teaching, teachers' use of everyday phenomena, teachers' perceptions of students' connection to everyday phenomena, and teachers' competence and framework for teaching.
The findings indicate that teachers understand everyday phenomena as phenomena that students encounter in their daily lives and have prior experience with before the phenomena are presented. Everyday phenomena vary among students due to individual experiences. The use of everyday phenomena and other phenomena are comparable between the Steiner Waldorf schools and the public schools. The three aspects of phenomenological teaching competency include the ability of phenomenological observation and reflection, ability to communicate and ability of curriculum design. The aspects influence each other and are reflected in the challenges and opportunities that the teachers identify in using everyday phenomena. Opportunities associated with the use of everyday phenomena include, amongst others, the promotion of exploration in public schools according to the Kunnskapsløftet 2020, the accumulation of teachers' knowledge through the use of phenomenon-based teaching, and the potential for enhancing students' curiosity and perceived usefulness, thereby contributing to the students' learning. Challenges related to the use of everyday phenomena include, amongst others, the fact that students' individual experiences with phenomena determine whether they are perceived as everyday phenomena, and that teachers with less experience may face limitations in their confidence in using phenomena. Additionally, limited preparation time and predefined topic areas in the public schools' curriculum restrict teachers' ability to engage in phenomenon-based teaching
There is limited research and literature concerning the biological perspective of phenomenon- based teaching. The purpose of this study is to fill a gap in the knowledge within phenomenon-based teaching in biology and explore both the opportunities and challenges of this instructional method. The research question guiding this master's project is: What characterizes phenomenon-based teaching in biology, and what opportunities and challenges does this instructional method present? From this research question, three sub-questions were derived: (1) What are the characteristics of phenomenon-based teaching in biology? (2) What opportunities exist with this instructional method? (3) What challenges are associated with this instructional method?
To address the research question, a single case study was conducted at a Steiner school. Firstly, I observed a biology class where phenomenon-based teaching was implemented. Then, six semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with one teacher and five students, forming the basis of the data. The sample consisted of a teacher with extensive experience in phenomenon-based teaching and students who had undergone phenomenon- based teaching in biology. To identify connections and aspects relevant to answering the research question, inductive content analysis was performed on the empirical data.
The study reveals characteristics, opportunities, and challenges of phenomenon-based teaching in biology. The instructional method is characterized by using the experience of the phenomenon as an entry point for learning and as a basis for connecting theories. The use of student activities and the temporal aspect of the instructional method also indicate characteristics of phenomenon-based teaching in biology. The study suggests that the instructional method provides opportunities for active and engaged students to perceive connections between experience and scientific concepts by using everyday notions and resisting ontological reversal. Challenges are associated with time constraints, addressing students' own everyday notions, and assessing students' learning outcomes. Based on the study's results and existing literature, three aspects of phenomenon-based teaching in biology are presented to illustrate the potential of the instructional method. While this study contributes to the research field, it also advocates for more research directed towards the use of phenomenon-based teaching in biology, as there is limited literature regarding this
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
