Edna Tambling
After graduating from Brisbane Teacher's College, Edna taught in Brisbane and country Queensland. On the Australia Day weekend in January 1938 Edna arrived in Darwin to take up a teaching position at Darwin Public School.
Edna's first day in the classroom was unusual for the Queensland trained teacher; she was faced with a room full of unusual faces, there were Chinese, Greeks, Italians and even two Russian girls, but no Aboriginal children. Edna taught at Darwin Primary School until December 1941 when the threat of Japanese invasion forced the newly wedded Tambling's to travel aboard SS President Grant (a transport ship acting as an evacuee ship for Darwin residents) to Brisbane and then by train to Adelaide.
The Tambling family returned to Darwin in 1947. Edna devoted her time to motherhood but remained involved with the Country Women's Association (CWA) and was a foundation member and secretary of the first free kindergarten in Darwin. Edna also played a key role in the establishment of a CWA hostel for outback women visiting Darwin for medical treatment in 1953.
1955 saw Edna return to teaching, firstly at Darwin Primary School and then in 1958 at Bagot (the first Aboriginal school to operate in the Northern Territory). In 1964 her husband became ill and they both retired from teaching.
