The Lady of a sugar mill in the world of literature: History, memoirs and cultural identity in the work of Anna Ribeiro de Góes Bittencourt (1843-1930)
The elite of Bahia in the ends, in the beginning of the century XIX, went by a period of economical and social difficulties due to the decline of the agricultural activities for export. Such context took many members of the learned elite to write texts about nostalgic times of opulence and formers abundance of the Bay area. Writer Anna Ribeiro (1843-1930), it was member of that group. This article analyzes Anna ribeiro´s memoirs and it proposes a comparison with the other publications and manuscripts of her authorship. An analysis of the sources indicates that the author registered in their memoirs some "golden" events that you reinforced her identification with the class of you of mill and, at the same time, she "hid" the decadence process lived by that same group
Artisan of self, artisan of history: edification and ruin in the work of Capistrano de Abreu
Tais afinidades são indicadas através da leitura de sua correspondência e do recurso ao contraste com outros intelectuais em sua "automodelagem".This article analyses one of the least emphasized aspects in the current interpretation of Capistrano de Abreu’s work, in the last twenty years of his life, his affiliation with the aesthetic trends and world views of Romanticism, remarkably present in Brazilian literature and culture during the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of twentheenth century. In the quest for this way, we retrace briefly the travel road of a “poetics of ruins” and its close connection with the author’s vision of history and, closer to the author of Chapter’s of Colonial History, to Goethe and Bildung. Such affinities are pointed in some Capistrano de Abreu letter’s and his “self –fashioning”
The analysis of tree comedies by Aristophanes (circa 450-388 B.C.) gives rise to the discussion, in a historical point of vie, of the recurring question placed by the dialetic between the particular e the universal. Focusing on the theme of War and Peace (as seen by the Greek comic poet, inspired by the Pelopponesian War), as wewll as establishing the role of comedy as an instrument of social criticism and outlining the political-cultural and socioeconomin picture found in Greece in the time of Aristophanes, we attest that Aristophanic works contain elements that break away from the spatiotemporal framework of the satirized facts, transforming them into themes of a universal character. Thus, by dealing with concrete situations found in Athens in the 5th Century B.C., the author leads us to contemplate ideas, feelings, emotions and prime movers present all along the history of manking
A Lipid Nanoparticle System Improves siRNA Efficacy in RPE Cells and a Laser-Induced Murine CNV Model
PURPOSE. To explore the possibility of the PEGylated liposome-protamine-hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (PEG-LPH-NP) loaded with siRNA (PEG-LPH-NP-S) in ARPE19 cells and a laser-induced rat model for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV). METHODS. PEG-LPH-NP-S was characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The encapsulation efficiency of siRNA in PEG-LPH-NP was analyzed by ultracentrifugation, whereas the protection of siRNA by PEG-LPH-NP was evaluated by electrophoresis. Human RPE cells (ARPE19) were used as the cell model for the studies of cellular uptake and the inhibition of VEGFR1 expression, visualized by a laser scanning confocal microscope. The area of CNV in the laser-induced rat model after intravitreous injection was measured. The distribution of the lipid nanoparticles in the retina after intravitreous administration was investigated by fluorescence microscopy. Finally, the TUNEL test and morphologic observation of the retina were conducted. RESULTS. It was indicated that PEG-LPH-NP-S was approximately 132 nm in particle size with a positive charge of approximately 20 mV, whereas the encapsulation efficiency of siRNA in PEG-LPH-NP was >95%. PEG-LPH-NP could protect the siRNA load and could facilitate the intracellular delivery of fluorescein-labeled siRNA to ARPE19 cells. VEGFR1 expression in ARPE19 cells could be inhibited, and the CNV area in the murine model could be reduced more effectively by PEG-LPH-NP-S compared with naked siRNA and by PEG-LPH-NP with negative siRNA. It seems that the toxicity of PEG-LPH-NP-S on the rat retina is low, based on the results of TUNEL testing and morphologic observation. CONCLUSIONS. PEG-LPH-NP may be a promising lipid nanoparticle system for the siRNA treatment of CNV.
