No full textThis essay is an attempt to read Martin Eden, Jack Londonʼs autobiographical novel, in terms of the inextricable relationship between the author and the protagonist. Critics have often taken the unbalanced plot and the lack of ironic distance between narrator and character in Martin Eden as the technical weakness of London, but this paper argues that the achievement of this novel owes a great deal to the attachment of London to Martin. The unbalanced structure is a necessary product of the severe struggle of the author to kill his romantic alter ego. // Martin, who aspires to win Ruth Morse, tries to cross class boundaries by making a career of a writer. Even after realizing the emptiness of Ruth, who turns out to be nothing but a typical figure of the bourgeoisie, he somehow persists in loving her. The notion underlying here is that, for Martin, love, career and art are fundamentally inseparable. He objects to the aestheteʼs view of Brissenden on account of his separation of art from career. Martinʼs identity and life consist only in the triunity of love/career/art; the alternative is the repudiation of life. Thus, the unnatural delay of his disappointment in love can be regarded as Londonʼs strategy to set the suicide of Martin as the necessary consequence of the story. // By finishing the story and killing Martin, London finally detaches himself from Martin, reconstructs his self, and, unlike Martin, survives as a professional writer. In this sense, Martin Eden is a story about “writerʼs self-reconstruction.

This paper aims at questioning the central paradox of the novel : why does an artist, who had been so determined and eager to build a literary body of work, decide to take his life precisely when he eventually experiences success and a form of recognition ? What can be said of a disappointment that is powerful enough to push to suicide ? Despite the realistic creed claimed by Martin Eden, the novel gradually unveils the figure of a romantic writer, of a rebel passionately enamoured of the Ideal, for whom disappointment and disillusionment are essentially pre-existent to the experience of artistic creation.Ce travail se propose d’interroger le paradoxe central du roman : pourquoi cet artiste qui a désiré avec autant d’acharnement faire œuvre littéraire met-il fin à ses jours au moment où il connaît enfin le succès et ce que l’on pourrait appeler une certaine forme de reconnaissance ? Quelle est donc cette déception assez profonde pour entraîner le suicide ? In Soviet times, domestic critics have repeatedly tried to interpret the novel as a denunciation of the venality of bourgeois society, the victim of which is the advanced, which eventually capitulated. Such criticism is justified, but still too unambiguous and harsh. The reasons that led Martin to a life catastrophe lie deeper, and it is not just a matter of “surrender”. After all, Martin did not churn out book after book when publishers were snapping up everything he wrote. He passed away, realizing that his talent had left him forever. The image of the laws of "success" receded into the background when London fully felt the scale and significance of the image of the artist that he created. The writer formulated the theme of the novel himself: "the tragedy of a loner trying to inspire the truth to the world." The hero's drama does not begin at the moment of his meeting with Ruth Morse. The disproportion of their spiritual horizons is too obvious for Ruth to seriously influence Martin, introducing him to her vulgar "ideals". In his relationship with Ruth, a conflict of aesthetic beauty and rough life reality is played out, which will affect the future fate of the hero and become an insoluble contradiction of his whole life

Outdoor filmmaking requires all material to be checked and in working order. The leading protagonist Martin Pullan is a Wildlife Media Undergraduate studying at the University of Cumbria. Martins goal is to put into practice researched fieldcraft techniques. The outcome is to meet the second protagonist the otter. Research identifies how to track an otter from footprints and spraint which the mammal leaves behind. Day 2 commenced with a long 8k walk along the river bank seeking out signs of otter tracks. The evening draws near with no signs of the otter along this part of the Eden. Day 3 started with Martin meeting an expert Cain Scrimgeour to seek out any further advice. Consultation leads to new research in the campus library. An early start to Day 4 with a new location further down the Eden. Despite the fact of the rain and cold weather, tracking was severe along the edge of the river banks. The spirit of the monitoring and imminent threat of no otter on the River Eden, the mood was low. A new location was selected which looked more favorable. Challenging days ahead and perseverance paid off with the sighting of some possible footprints. Lifting the apprehension of otter tracks, consultation with the expert for clarification. An unfavorable outcome and determination to succeed
