Relationship between phase angle measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in adults

No full text
Purpose - The phase angle (PhA) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is associated with nutritional status and cellular health, and it is a clinically important parameter used to assess the risk of various diseases. It remains unclear whether PhA is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the BIA parameter PhA and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Design/methodology/approach - This cross-sectional study was conducted with 300 adults aged 20-64 years (NAFLD: 196, normal: 104). Some biochemical findings of the participants were collected, and whole-body and segmental PhAs were measured using Tanita (MC-780) at 50 kHz. Findings - The PhA values of the whole body (p = 0.003), trunk (p < 0.001), right and left legs (p < 0.001 for both) were found to significantly differ according to the degrees of fatty liver. It was observed that the highest PhA values were in normal individuals. Logistic regression analysis showed that the reduction in PhAs of the whole body (p = 0.038), right (p = 0.019) and left legs (p = 0.049) and trunk (p = 0.001) after adjusting for all confounding factors increased the risk of NAFLD. Additionally, whole body PhA was significantly associated with age (year, p = 0.02), BMI (kg/m2; p < 0.001), fat mass (kg; p = 0.001), fat mass (%; p < 0.001), albumin (g/L; p < 0.001) and CRP (mg/dL; p = 0.001). Originality/value - The results of this study showed that PhA can be used in the management of NAFLD. To identify potential mechanisms in the relationship between the angle of the liver and NAFLD, large-scale prospective studies are needed. The authors are grateful to all individuals who participated in this study. Ekin, Cansu Cigdem/0000-0003-4838-9708This research aims to conduct a bibliometric study to describe how game-based educational research is structured and how it has evolved over time. For this purpose, bibliometric analysis has been used to analyze 4980 publications indexed by the Elsevier SCOPUS database between 1967 and May 2021. The related publications were evaluated by analyzing co-authorship, co-occurrence, and citation by considering author, keyword, country, journal, university, and publication variables. As a result of the bibliometric analysis, it was concluded that the United States was leading the field and significantly publishing more studies. Top performing organizations were in Taiwan and the United States. According to the keyword co-occurrence analysis, "game-based learning" was the most used keyword followed by "serious games" and "gamification". Co-authorship status results show that collaboration between researchers in the field was not high and the number of researchers in co-author groups was small. It was found that the most influential research was related to literature review on games and the effectiveness of games on motivation or learning and Computers & Education was the most published and cited journal in game-based educational research

A Simple Analytical Model for THz Band Path Loss

No full text
In this letter, we devise a frequency, distance, and altitude-dependent, analytical model for THz band path loss. This model is obtained from cascaded regression of transmittance data from Line-by-Line Radiative Transfer Model (LBLRTM) propagation analysis tool, considering altitudes from the sea-level to 1 km, distances from 1 m to 100 m and frequencies within 0.79-0.91 THz and 0.93-0.94 THz. The proposed approach yields high accuracy with respect to propagation data while providing a simple, closed-form expression to help the design of Terahertz (THz) band drone communications

Erratum: A simple analytical model for THz band path loss (IEEE Commun. Lett. (2023) l27:3 (996-1000) DOI: 10.1109/LCOMM.2023.3241403)

In the above article [1], an analytical model for THz band transmittance (τ) is devised as the joint function of distance (d), altitude (h), and frequency (f). In [1], the last paragraph of Section II should be corrected as follows, also replacing [1, eq. (6)] with (1). Once transmittance is obtained, absorption loss is computed as a function of the three parameters as Aabs (d, h, f) = ({1}/{τ (d, h, f)}), and the distance and frequency-dependent free space path loss (FSPL) is calculated as Afspl (d, f) = (4π fd/c)2, where c denotes the speed of light. Finally, total path loss can be written as the summation of absorption loss and free space spread loss in dB scale, as in (1). (Equation Presented)

Assessment of the Response of Offshore Monopile Foundations to Vibratory Hammer Action: A parametric study to the response of offshore monopile foundations to a proper definition of a vibratory hammer including imperfections

No full text
The demand for wind energy has led to the need for larger offshore wind turbines, which require larger monopiles for support. Vibratory pile driving is a common technique for installing these monopiles, but current engineering models are designed for smaller diameter monopiles and may not be applicable to larger ones. Additionally, the vibratory action produced by counter-rotating eccentric masses in the hammer can cause unintended bending motions in the pile if there is a slight misalignment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of gear misalignment on the response of monopiles under vibratory action, including these imperfections. To achieve this, a hammer model was created and coupled with a pile model and a simplified soil reaction. A parametric study was conducted to evaluate the pile response to the modeled vibratory hammer with imperfections over a range of specified variables. The transfer of force from the hammer to the pile and the range of driving frequencies that activate the isolation springs in the vibratory hammer were examined, as well as the effect of misalignments on the power consumption of the vibratory hammer and the bending displacements caused by these misalignments. The study found that there was no significant impact on axial vibrations as a result of misalignment of rotating masses. The force transfer ratio from hammer to pile is 0.5 to 0.7 for smaller diameter piles, and it is important to include force transfer ratios in simple engineering models during the initial design phase of pile drivability prediction models when the decision is made not to model the hammer. The study also showed that modeling the hammer-pile-soil system with shell elements instead of 1D rod elements yields similar trends in the responses, but the absolute response values of large diameter piles with simple 1D rod elements leads to an underestimation of the response in the lower driving frequency range and an overestimation in the higher driving frequency range.Even if as much as 50% of the eccentric masses are misaligned, the impact of bending vibrations on the power consumption of the vibratory hammer is insignificant. However, bending displacement can become substantial when 6% of the eccentric masses are misaligned. Smaller diameter piles are more susceptible to vibrations at lower frequency ranges, while larger diameters are impacted in higher frequency ranges. Only large diameter monopiles are susceptible to axial vibrations near their natural frequencies, while all diameter piles are affected by bending vibrations near their natural frequencies.Isolator springs are effectively activated in the region of higher driving frequencies (> 28 Hz) for large diameter monopiles. In the case of small diameter piles (< 3 m), the relative motion between suppressor housing and pile head remained above unity for all driving frequencies, meaning poor activation of the isolator springs.Civil Engineering | Structural Engineering | Structural Mechanic

Bu çalışma, Antroposen'in romanlar üzerinden nasıl anlatıldığını, insan üzerindeki etkilerinin neler olduğunu ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Romanlar boyunca yazarın, insanların doğaya karşı tepkilerini nasıl kontrol edeceklerini öğrenene kadar hatalarından acı çekmeye devam edeceğini bize göstermeyi başardığı açıktır.The Anthropocene is a major concern in the twenty-first century. It highlights the human interference to nature and clarifies how human beings destroy the living and non-living things and what consequences can generate due to this interference. Doris Lessing, who is passionate about creating an image of the forthcoming disasters because of the intervention of a human, is one of the pioneer authors of the Anthropocene. In her works, Mara and Dann: An Adventure and its sequel The Story of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and The Snow Dog are the representatives of the post-apocalyptic world in the near future. Plots in both novels are set in the distant future and the characters in the novels suffer from the mistakes made by their ancestors. This study aims at demonstrating how the Anthropocene is described through the novels, what effects demonstrate on humanity. Throughout the novels, it is obvious that the author has managed to exhibit us that human beings will continue to suffer from their mistakes until they learn how to control their reactions towards nature
