Literatura, romances de aventura e colonialismo no sul da África (1880-1910)
Get PDFRESUMO Nas últimas décadas do século XIX, o sul da África passou por transformações econômicas e políticas derivadas da expansão colonial, dos impactos da industrialização e do enrijecimento de legislações de caráter segregacionista. O período também atraiu a atenção de diversos literatos que tematizaram esses processos por meio de romances de aventura ambientados nos territórios coloniais. Esse artigo visa analisar parte dessa produção literária, enfatizando o papel político dos romances de G. A. Henty, Bertram Mitford, Mary Ann Carey-Hobson e Anna Howarth na idealização da formação da sociedade colonial no sul da África

No full textO artigo se propõe analisar a construção das masculinidades no romance Lésbia (1890), de Délia, pseudônimo literário de Maria Benedita Câmara Bormann (1853-1895). A trama narra a formação e a trajetória ficcional de uma romancista brasileira, por meio da qual a autora delata os estigmas sociais que recaem sobre as mulheres, sobretudo das classes médias, que anseiam pela inserção em carreiras profissionais no fin-de-siècle brasileiro. A multiplicidade de perfis masculinos delineados na narrativa possibilita a reflexão a respeito do modo como Bormann problematiza a construção dos modelos predominantes de virilidade na passagem para o período republicano no Brasil oitocentista, bem como seus impactos sobre as hierarquias e contrastes de gênero. Por um lado, indica as apropriações críticas de elementos do naturalismo no escrutínio de perfis de masculinidade compreendidos pela romancista como vaidosos e mesquinhos, violentos e irresponsáveis; por outro, sugere a possibilidade de outras vivências do masculino, demarcados pela erudição e sensibilidade, capazes de cultivar relações menos verticalizadas com mulheres, baseadas na paixão e na valorização do intelecto.Palavras-chave: História e Literatura; Maria Benedita Câmara Bormann; Lésbia.</jats:p

Get PDFNa segunda metade do século XIX, letrados, médicos e juristas fizeram amplo uso da cultura escrita e literária para problematizar as dimensões sociais e biológicas do crime, em narrativas sintomáticas de suas preocupações a respeito dos problemas urbanos. Este estudo detém-se sobre dois textos literários do anglo-irlandês Bram Stoker (1847-1912), The Primrose Path (1875) e The Secret of the Growing Gold (1892), ambos publicados na imprensa periódica, os quais evidenciam as interpretações do literato a respeito da figura social do criminoso a partir de apropriações de teses degeneracionistas e de preocupações de âmbito racial.</jats:p

No full textO artigo analisa o romance de aventura At Home in the Transvaal (1884), de Mary Ann Carey-Hobson, observando a fonte literária a partir de uma perspectiva teórico-metodológica que enfatiza suas relações com o mundo do trabalho e o colonialismo no sul da África nas décadas de 1870-1880. A ênfase recai sobre a idealização dos trabalhadores nas fazendas e nos campos de mineração, observando o destaque de Hobson a um tipo desejável de colono: jovial, laborioso e empreendedor, sem “vícios morais”, ao exemplo do alcoolismo ou dos jogos de azar. Além disso, estabelece distinções entre trabalhadores brancos e negros, descrevendo-os como serviçais domésticos, subservientes e afetuosamente apegados aos seus empregadores, sintomático de elementos racialistas e paternalistas na escrita literária de Hobson. Dessa forma, o romance aproxima-se dos interesses da elite colonial e do colonato branco no sul da África que, naquele contexto, visava estabelecer formas mais efetivas de controle da mão de obra e das terras de africanos negros.The article analyzes Mary Ann Carey-Hobson’s adventure novel At Home in the Transvaal (1884), observing the literary source from a theoretical-methodological perspective that emphasizes its relations with labor and colonialism in southern Africa, during the 1870s and 1880s. The analysis emphasizes the idealization of farmers and workers in the mining fields, noting Hobson\u27s emphasis on a desirable type of settler: young, hardworking and enterprising, subservient and affectionately attached to their employers, symptomatic of racialist and paternalistic elements in Hobson\u27s literary writing. In this way, the novel approaches the interests of the colonial elite and the white settlers in southern Africa, which, in that context, aimed to establish more effective ways of controlling black Africans’ labor and lands.without “moral vices”, such as alcoholism or gambling. Furthermore, Hobson draws distinctions between white and black workers, describing them as domestic servants

No full textO período em torno da formalização da União Sul-Africana (1910) foi caracterizado por debates políticos acerca da identidade nacional sul-africana, bem como pela promulgação de legislações de caráter segregacionista e da negação de direitos políticos à população negra. Nesse contexto, o romancista britânico H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) retornou à África do Sul, onde viveu em sua juventude, e registrou suas impressões de viagem em diários. O artigo visa analisar as marcas da articulação política e da resistência africana nos diários de viagem de Haggard, com atenção especial ao contexto laboral e aos mundos do trabalho de sul-africanos negros e dos chamados “brancos pobres”. A despeito do alinhamento político de Haggard, os relatos do romancista possibilitam vislumbrar rastros fragmentários das reivindicações desses sujeitos históricos num contexto de institucionalização de leis excludentes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
