Editor's Choice – European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) 2023 Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Management of Atherosclerotic Carotid and Vertebral Artery Disease

    No full text
Funding Information: Guideline Writing Committee (GWC) members were selected by the GWC chairs and ESVS Guidelines Committee (GC) chair to represent clinicians involved in decision making in patients with atherosclerotic carotid and VA disease. The GWC comprised vascular surgeons, stroke physicians/neurologists, interventional radiologists, and interventional cardiologists (see Appendix B for specialty and institution). Views and preferences for the target population were not sought directly, but Mr Chris Macey of the Irish Heart Foundation and the Stroke Alliance for Europe collaborated in preparing section 14 (Information for Patients). GWC members provided disclosure statements regarding relationships that could be perceived as conflicts of interest (these are filed and available at ESVS headquarters via [email protected] ). GWC members received no financial support from any pharmaceutical, device, or industry body, to develop the guidelines.publishersversionpublishe

Economic Impact of Rural Development Plan 2007 2013 in Tuscany

    No full text
In 2007 in every European Union region, involved in the planning of Rural Development Plan (RDP), an independent evaluator should asses the impact of the plan in term of value added and productivity. Each region has adopted different methodologies but few of them have followed the indications of Common and Monitoring Evaluation Framework (CMEF) to evaluate the net value deriving by direct and indirect effect. IRPET, the Independent evaluator of Tuscany, utilising REMI-IRPET model has assed the impact of RDP on the main economic variables until 2020. Among 30 different measures it has been chosen only 5 of them that cover more than 54% of total amount of public and private investments. The economic impacts are also evaluated at provincial level.evaluation, regional model, rural development, Community/Rural/Urban Development,

CLUSTER RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A MULTIFACETED ACTIVE STRATEGY TO IMPLEMENT LOW BACK PAIN PRACTICE GUIDELINES; EFFECT ON COMPETENCE, PROCESS OF CARE AND PATIENT OUTCOMES IN PHYSICAL THERAPY

    No full text
The study was a cluster randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the effectiveness of an active strategy to implement practice guidelines for low back pain in physical therapy. Physical therapy clinics (clinics=28, therapists=41) were randomized to receive a multifaceted active intervention (education, audit, feedback) (clinics=16, therapists=24) to increase awareness regarding key recommendations in guidelines or mailed guidelines (clinics=12, therapists=18). Primary outcome measures were change in pre to post intervention competence score (18 clinical vignettes), adherence to guidelines and change in patient Oswestry scores from first to last visit. The competence test was administered at baseline and on completion of the education course. Data on LBP patients treated by participating therapists in a 12-week pre (therapists=41, patients=50) and post (therapists=41, patients=107) intervention period (education, audit and feedback) was extracted from the UPMC electronic database. Patient care was classified as being adherent or non-adherent using 6 quality indicators developed to reflect recommendations in the guidelines. Overall percentage of adherence and adherence to individual criterion on the guidelines were also calculated. The results of the study indicated that education did not have an effect improving knowledge measured by change in total competence score. However, there were significant differences between groups on the ability to appropriately identify directional preference with movement testing, where the intervention group did better than the control. Adherence to guidelines and patient outcomes did not improve as a result of the active intervention strategy. The groups were not significantly different when comparing overall adherence to guidelines or to individual criterion on guidelines. There was an underutilization of mobilization thrust (82.3%), traction (78.5%) and graded exercises (47.6%) for fear avoidant patients, while stabilization was over-utilized in 51% of patients. Although therapists demonstrated moderate to high scores on the competence test, they failed to apply this knowledge in clinical practice. Future research should focus on a qualitative inquiry into organizational and environmental barriers to adoption of clinical practice guidelines. These include evaluating if payment policies and reimbursement from providers are aligned with guidelines and also assessing the extent to which patient demands and compliance influences adherence to guidelines

Data protection: the challenges facing social networking

    No full text
The popularity of social networking sites has increased dramatically over the past decade. A recent report indicated that thirty-eight percent of online users have a social networking profile. Many of these social networking site users (SNS users) post or provide personal information over the internet every day. According to the latest OfCom study, the average adult SNS user has profiles on 1.6 sites and most check their profiles at least once every other day. However, the recent rise in social networking activity has opened the door to the misuse and abuse of personal information through identity theft, cyber stalking, and undesirable screenings by prospective employers. Behavioral advertising programs have also misused personal information available on social networking sites. Society is now facing an important question: what level of privacy should be expected and required within the social networking environment

Sustainable Development of the Nile River at Greater Khartoum

    No full text
Sudan is the largest country in Africa, but there is poverty and a lack of infrastructure, skills and opportunity despite its substantial natural resources. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum City, located at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers. Unfortunately development on Nile River Front is limited due to the risk of flooding and erosion. There is a danger that rapid economic development may take place in this unique area without sustainable development planning. This research project aims to develop strategies to protect the Nile River banks by suitable stabilization methods so that development can take place safely. Data has been collected about hydrology, morphology, geotechnical factors, soil classifications, river pattern systems, driving forces, and the main problems restricting sustainable development and engineering works for the Nile River. In addition the following have been reviewed: historical background, existing land uses, current environmental situations, and the economic and social conditions of the study areas. Research identified Cairo, Egypt as a similar case study, where data collected by the author included historical background, current situations, strategic visions and development plan for Nile River Shores. Further information was collected about sustainable development from a general literature review. From these collected data a set of guidelines and indicators for sustainable development was established related to environmental, economic and social factors. Based on those guidelines and indicators, methods of stabilization of the banks for each shore were specified and a proposed development plan was established. Methods of stabilization of banks and the development plan were refined and evaluated to establish a final version of the development plan: Sustainable Development of the Nile River Front (SDNRF) at Greater Khartoum. From refinement and evaluations, barriers and constraints for implementation were specified with their suggested solutions. Finally, conclusions and recommendations related to the SDNRF Manual about development and regulations were established

Effect and Improvement Areas for Port State Control Inspections to Decrease the Probability of Casualty

    No full text
This report is the fourth part of a PhD project called "The Econometrics of Maritime Safety – Recommendations to Enhance Safety at Sea" and is based on 183,000 port state control inspections and 11,700 casualties from various data sources. Its overall objective is to provide recommendations to improve safety at sea. The fourth part looks into measuring the effect of inspections on the probability of casualty on either seriousness or casualty first event to show the differences across the regimes. It further gives a link of casualties that were found during inspections with either the seriousness of casualties and casualty first events which reveals three areas of improvement possibilities to potentially decrease the probability of a casualty – the ISM code, machinery and equipment and ship and cargo operations.maritime safety;correspondence analysis;binary logistic regression;probability of casualty;improvement;Port State Control Effectiveness;casualty first events;detention;port state control deficiences;target factor
