    Geometry of the internal carotid artery and recurrent patterns in location, orientation, and rupture status of lateral aneurysms: an image-based computational study

    BACKGROUND: Intracranial aneurysm development and rupture may be associated to the morphology of the parent vessel. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively characterize the geometry of the internal carotid artery (ICA) in relation to the location and orientation of lateral aneurysms and to identify recurrent patterns associated with their rupture status. METHODS: The geometry of 54 ICAs hosting lateral aneurysms was analyzed by means of computational geometry techniques. The ICA was split into individual bends, and the bend hosting the aneurysm was described in terms of curvature, torsion, length, and radius. Aneurysm position and orientation with respect to the parent vessel and specifically the hosting bend were characterized, as well as angles between the portions of the parent artery immediately upstream of and downstream from the aneurysm and the aneurysm ostium. Differences in geometric parameters with respect to rupture status and their performance as classifiers were evaluated. RESULTS: ICA bends hosting ruptured aneurysms were shorter with a smaller radius, lower maximum curvature, and lower proximal torsion compared with those hosting unruptured lesions. Ruptured aneurysms occurred in more distal portions of the ICA, along the outer wall of the vessel, and closer to the curvature peak within the hosting bend than unruptured ones. The proximal portions of ICAs hosting ruptured aneurysms approached the ostium region at a smaller angle. CONCLUSION: Geometric factors relative to the ICA were associated with the distribution of aneurysms and their rupture status. The present work has potential implications in the quest for hemodynamic factors contributing to the development, progression, and rupture of intracranial aneurysms

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Radial artery wall shear stress evaluation in patients with arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis access

    It has been extensively documented that changes in blood flow induce vascular remodeling and this phenomenon seems to be correlated to the shear forces imposed on the vessel wall by motion of blood. Wall shear stress, the tractive force that acts on the endothelium, has been shown to influence endothelial cell function. To study changes in wall shear stress that develop on the vessel wall upon changes of blood flow, we set up a technique that allows estimation of shear stress in the radial artery of patients on chronic hemodialysis therapy. The technique is based on color-flow Doppler examination of the radial artery before and after surgical creation of radiocephalic fistula for hemodialysis. Calculation of time function wall shear stress and blood flow rate in the radial artery is performed on the basis of arterial diameter, center-line velocity waveform and blood viscosity, using a numerical method developed according to Womersley's theory for pulsatile flow in tubes. The results presented confirm that the model developed is suitable for calculation of the wall shear stress that develops in the radial artery of patients before and after surgical creation of an arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis. This methodology was developed for characterization of wall shear stress in the radial artery but may be well applied to other vessels that can be examined by echo-Doppler technique

    Role of ultrastructural determinants of glomerular permeability in ultrafiltration function loss

    The epithelial filtration slit is a crucial component of the glomerular capillary membrane, which is essential for maintaining glomerular filtration function. Though chronic kidney diseases are an immense clinical problem, the mechanisms through which structural alterations reduce glomerular water filtration have not yet been understood completely. To investigate the mechanisms underlying filtration function loss, we studied rats with spontaneously occurring progressive kidney disease, either treated with angiotensin II antagonist or untreated, combining high-resolution electron microscopy of the glomerular capillary wall with theoretical water filtration modeling. Under pathological conditions, epithelial filtration pores and the extension of the subpodocyte space were larger than in normal controls. Numerical analyses indicated that these ultrastructural changes increased hydraulic resistance of the glomerular capillary wall by extending coverage of the filtration barrier by the subpodocyte space, with the changes in hydrodynamic forces acting on podocytes likely being responsible for their detachment. Angiotensin II inhibition normalized the subpodocyte space’s hydraulic resistance, restored mechanical podocyte load, and preserved CD151–α3 integrin complex assembly, improving podocyte adherence and survival. Our results show that ultrastructural changes in podocytes are major determinants of the hydraulic resistance of the glomerular capillary wall and highlight the mechanism of podocyte loss in kidney disease progression, as well as the mechanisms underlying angiotensin II inhibition

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
