Plasma-substrate interaction in a dual frequency APPJ

    No full text
The Argon plasma produced in a coaxial jet by a pair of high frequency (HF 17 kHz) electrodes and a downstream ring radiofrequency electrode (RF 27.12 MHz) were investigated by means of 2D simulations and electrical and optical characterizations. As ignited, the plasma spreads to the facing surfaces and couples the HF and RF electrodes, even if positioned a few cm apart from each other. As a result, the HF to drive ions to the substrate while the RF allows to sustain the plasma while limiting the current density

The disposition of primidone in elderly patients.

    No full text
The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of primidone at steady-state were studied in 10 elderly patients aged 70-81 years and eight control subjects aged 18-26 years. 2. Primidone half-lives and clearance values (mean +/- s.d.) were similar in the elderly and in the young (12.1 +/- 4.6 vs 14.7 +/- 3.5 h and 34.8 +/- 9.0 vs 33.2 +/- 7.2 ml h-1 kg-1 respectively. 3. The serum concentrations of the metabolites phenylethylmalonamide (PEMA) and phenobarbitone relative to those of parent drug were higher in the elderly than in the young, the difference being significant (P less than 0.01) in the case of PEMA. 4. The renal clearances of primidone, phenobarbitone and PEMA were moderately decreased in the elderly but this reduction was statistically significant only for PEMA. Elderly patients excreted a reduced proportion of unchanged primidone and an increased proportion of PEMA in urine. 5. Ageing is associated with a greater accumulation of PEMA, which is unlikely to have a major clinical significance

The letters of Fernando Pessoa to the three directors of literary magazine Presença, lend themselves to a reading in terms of the genetic process of which they are the result. It is particularly interesting from this point of view to consider the revisions and the mot obvious cases of self-censorship which highlight the control exercised by the author over his texts. The letters present other worth noticing aspects : Pessoa' s refusal to a psychoanalytic approach to his literature, his scepticism towards Freud's method, the attention he pays to psychological mechanisms which are underneath the literary creation, the «honesty» of the letters in which he talks about himself and the attempt to impose his own key for the interpretation of his work, the tendency to simulate and to disguise. Direct Effect of International Agreements of the European Union

    No full text
Van Gend en Loos established the conceptual premises of a crucial issue to shape the relationships between the European Union and international law: the function of direct effect as a powerful instrument to guarantee that the rules of one system are complied with in another legal order. However, if compared with direct effect of EU legal rules, the issue of the effects of EU international agreements is made more complicated by the combination of the more traditional question of the self- executing character of international agreement provisions and the narrow meaning of direct effect. The former issue, strongly affected by the technique of incorporation and the rank of international law obligations within the incorporating legal order, goes to the heart of the constitutional architecture of the European Union legal order where a balance is to be found between the obligation to comply with international law and the integrity of the EU legal order. The latter notion concerns instead the relationship between the private person and the legal rule and defines the special character of the EU which distinguishes it from international law. Since such a quality of EU rules cannot be automatically applied to international law rules incorporated in the EU legal order it shall be verified case by case. This is the reason why, for the present author, the double test approach, first applied by the ECJ in the VGL, it is the right test to determine direct effect of EU international agreements, but cannot be applied to verify the self-executing effect of international law in the traditional (broader) meaning

El Tirant lo Blanch i les seues traducccions anteriors al segle XIX:: Aspectes de recepció i de traducció

    No full text
On the basis of the premise that every translation is a recreation to a great extent, the author studies the translations of Tirant lo Blanch into Castilian, Italian and French made before the XIXth century. By means of the comparison of texts and the analysis of quotations, notations and, in general, all the difficulties found in the different manuscripts where these translations are kept, Vicent Martines elaborates a history of the reception by these three cultures of the Valencian novel. Through this history we can find out that Tirant lo Blanch was not very different from a chivalresque book of this period (as regards the typographic solutions, the format and the publishers' and translators' remarks) and that it was interpreted as a real chivalresque manual

Lo sport nell’ordinamento giuridico dell’Unione europea.

    No full text
This chapter examines the Union's action in the field of sport. Such action is limited by the configuration of its competence, as conferred by Article 165 TFEU, which defines it as a competence supporting the action of the Member States. This article has thus far been interpreted with a certain degree of caution by the Court. Consequently, institutional acts are generally recommendatory or coordinating in nature. The specific nature of sport, recognized in primary law (the Treaties), does not exempt the sports sector from the application of Union law. Indeed, sports activities are subject to the provisions of the Treaties to the extent that they constitute an economic activity. Where rules adopted by a Member State, or more commonly in the case of sports activities, by sports federations or regulatory bodies (which are also subject to the horizontally applicable provisions of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union concerning the free movement of goods, services, capital and persons) restrict or potentially restrict the free movement of such factors of production, the following scheme applies. The rule must be justified in order to be maintained; justifications are usually based on imperative reasons relating to the public interest, and the specific nature of sport is taken into account when assessing such derogations from the Treaty. It must be proven (and the burden of proof rests with the author of the measure) that the justified measure is necessary to achieve the objective and that there are no less restrictive measures which would be suitable for achieving the stated purpose

A che gioco giochiamo? Tradurre Vitaï Lampada per riflettere su uno scarto culturale

    No full text
The paper presents a possible translation of the poem "Vitaï Lampada", published by Sir Henry Newbolt, in 1897. His work can be inscribed in the genre of military-patriotic poetry, much in vogue in the nineties of the nineteenth century. The author reached in those years a high degree of popularity, for the tone and the character of his verses, but later fell out of favor - especially with the critics - coinciding with the decline of the imperialist ethic - with which Newbolt is inextricably associated - and with the awareness of the atrocity of the war, resulting from the impact of the first World War. Therefore, a timeworn text, the work of an author who is poorly considered and sometimes derided. Yet, because of the characteristics that make it an object of criticism and sometimes scorn, this poem - as the entire production of Newbolt - is worthy of attention because it is extremely representative of its era, of its mindset, of a cultural heritage that can be judged only when put in its proper context. The paper seeks to show how the translation of poetry can be an intellectual operation which requires a further degree of meta-textual reflection. The idiomatic phrase in the title of the paper - "What game are we playing?", inspired by the famous refrain, "Play up! Play up! and play the game! "- is intended as an invitation to reflect on the specificity of the semantic field of the verb" to play "in the ideological and historical moment in which Newbolt's poem was produced. From this consideration comes the need, for the translator, to bridge - or at least to reduce - the cultural gap between the British and the Italian concepts of "playing the game", especially with regard to the idea of "playing" a sport, and the value the Italians place to sports in terms of education or patriotic

Marianna Martines at the keyboard: music, agency, and self-fashioning

    No full text
This thesis explores Marianna Martines as a composer-performer, with a particular focus on her keyboard repertoire. It provides a situational map that places her within the socio-musical context of 18th -century Vienna, culminating in a somatic epistemology for engaging with her keyboard works. Venturing beyond traditional theoretical analysis, this thesis highlights socio- political, performative, and embodied aspects of her music, revealing how she self-fashioned her artistic identity and exercised personal agency, particularly within her salons. Doing so engages with the question of what it means for a pianist to ‘speak’ through their music. Martines’s impact on Viennese musical life, including her influence on her contemporaries, underscores her lasting significance. Historical biases mistakenly judged women by androcentric standards that often did not apply to their lived realities. This thesis examines how gender and class shaped Martines’s career choices, and particularly the curation of a publicly private persona: her outwardly displayed status as a private person, and non- professional dilettante, while repeatedly finding herself in the public eye. The thesis contextualises Martines within the broader socio-political context of Enlightenment Vienna, including 18th -century anxieties over marriage and gender roles, frequently commented on by contemporary writers. Among the latter was a semi-anonymous author, known only by her initials T.R.v.N., who published a feminist manifesto that challenged gender inequalities, particularly women’s limited agency in establishing intimate relationships. These documents imply the profound implications Martines’s unmarried status had for her financial security and social freedom, particularly due to her family’s striving for social mobility and their resulting strict adherence to upper-class conventions. Beyond galant schemata, analysing Martines’s keyboard works for their somatic qualities, this thesis reveals how she balanced sociability with virtuosity. She found greatest possible freedom of expression within rigidly defined norms, subtly subverting expectations and pushing boundaries, while maintaining decorum through her mentor Metastasio’s ideal of sprezzatura

Internal Transport Barrier Broadening through Subdominant Mode Stabilization in Reversed Field Pinch Plasmas

    No full text
The reversed field pinch (RFP) device RFX-mod features strong internal transport barriers when the plasma accesses states with a single dominant helicity. Such transport barriers enclose a hot helical region with high confinement whose amplitude may vary from a tiny one to an amplitude encompassing an appreciable fraction of the available volume. The transition from narrow to wide thermal structures has been ascribed so far to the transport reduction that occurs when the dominant mode separatrix, which is a preferred location for the onset of stochastic field lines, disappears. In this Letter we show instead that the contribution from the separatrix disappearance, by itself, is marginal and the main role is instead played by the progressive stabilization of secondary modes. The position and the width of the stochastic boundary encompassing the thermal structures have been estimated by applying the concept of a 3D quasiseparatrix layer, developed in solar physics to treat reconnection phenomena without true separatrices and novel to toroidal laboratory plasmas. Considering the favorable scaling of secondary modes with the Lundquist number, these results open promising scenarios for RFP plasmas at temperatures higher than the presently achieved ones, where lower secondary modes and, consequently, larger thermal structures are expected. Furthermore, this first application of the quasiseparatrix layer to a toroidal plasma indicates that such a concept is ubiquitous in magnetic reconnection, independent of the system geometry under investigation
