Cultural Aspects of Immediacy in an Asian Classroom Context
Among the various factors affecting students’ learning, immediacy is
probably the one that has been most studied over the last four decades. Immediacy,
a term coined by Mehrabian (1967), refers to verbal and nonverbal behaviours
used by interlocutors to decrease physical and physiological distance between
them, thus creating affinity, liking and affect. However, a number of questions arise
as to the suitability of the various immediacy scales and their cultural significance
in a non U.S. context, such as Hong Kong. Furthermore we were interested in
possible differences in teachers’ perception based on students’ motivation. This
paper presents the first part of an immediacy study, based on students of the
Department of English of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (looking into
mapping patterns of behaviours that increase immediacy). The results indicate
that Hong Kong students prefer the holistic approach of the Chinese traditional
teacher, a teacher who goes beyond just teaching in class, and that nonverbal
actions are not high in their list of preferred behaviours in teachers, such as
gestures, walking around the classroom or standing close to students (unlike what
has been observed among U.S. students)
Building responses to sustainable development challenges: A multistakeholder collaboration framework and application to climate change
The affirmation of open innovation and collaborative systems is enabling unprecedented opportunities to create business value while facilitating multistakeholder conversation on sustainability issues. In particular, platform-based models are emerging as organization archetypes able to facilitate cooperative dynamics among industrial actors, policy makers, academicians, scientists, and citizens. In this article, we use interdisciplinary business management and collaborative innovation literature to build the conceptual framework of a multisided platform as a collaboration environment gathering actors willing to define responses to sustainable development challenges. We present five dimensions or “genes,” that is, the focus and strategic intent or orientation of the platform (what), the participating sides, actors and groups (who), the actions, flows and coordination mechanisms (how), and the value drivers, benefits and externalities (why), and the rules regulating the affiliation and interaction processes (governance). We also present and discuss 30 subtopics or management items that are associated with the five dimensions defined. We then apply the conceptual model to analyze a case in the climate change endeavor and to show how competitive and cooperative dynamics can be virtuously integrated to provide individual- and company-driven responses to a timely socioenvironmental issue. The article provides a new perspective on collaboration to enhance social development, and it offers theoretical and practitioner insights for a broad interdisciplinary audience including scholars, practitioners, business, and platform managers
Extreme nonlinear electrodynamics in metamaterials with very small linear dielectric permittivity
We consider a subwavelength periodic layered medium whose slabs are filled by arbitrary linear metamaterials and standard nonlinear Kerr media and show that the homogenized medium behaves as a Kerr medium whose parameters can assume values not available in standard materials. Exploiting such a parameter availability, we focus on the situation where the linear relative dielectric permittivity is very small, thus allowing the observation of the extreme nonlinear regime where the nonlinear polarization is comparable with or even greater than the linear part of the overall dielectric response. The behavior of the electromagnetic field in the extreme nonlinear regime is very peculiar and characterized by interesting features such as the transverse power flow reversing. In order to probe this regime, we consider a class of fields (transverse magnetic nonlinear guided waves) admitting full analytical description and show that these waves are allowed to propagate even in media with epsilon 0 since the nonlinear polarization produces a positive overall effective permittivity. The considered nonlinear waves exhibit, in addition to the mentioned features, a number of interesting properties like hyperfocusing induced by the phase difference between the field components
Muri, emarginazione, scuola

Two-peaked and flat-top perfect bright solitons in nonlinear metamaterials with epsilon near zero
[Letter from Elia J. Hobbs to T. N. Carswell - February 24, 1954]
A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Elia J. Hobbs, Garland, N. C., February 24, 1954. Hobbs explains who C. W. Presswood is, what he has asked and advises that she has included a "copy" of part of the letter from C. W. Presswood. Presswood requests to lease her place for five years describing the work needed to "get it fixed up where you could use it for some good" then states that he would like to buy the place. Hobbs resumes her correspondence to Carswell explaining what she thinks about the proposition
