Whaling Will Never Do For Me: The American Whaleman in the Nineteenth Century

] just begin to find out that whaling will never do for me and have determined to leave the ship here if possible. That sentiment, expressed by a foremast hand aboard the ship Caroline in 1843, is one shared by many of the whalemen in this fascinating book. Interest in Herman Melville\u27s Moby Dick has contributed to a substantial literature on the history and lore of the industry. But not until now has the vast body of surviving whaleship logs and journals been used to paint an encompassing picture of the difficult but colorful life aboard nineteenth-century American whaling vessels.Briton Cooper Busch, author of a definitive history of the American sealing industry, in this book only incidentally discusses the actual chase for whales. His focus instead is the life of whalemen at sea, and particularly the harsh discipline that kept men aboard through long and often dispiriting years. Busch depicts the complex social world aboard ship, defining and detailing such issues as crime and punishment, competing racial elements, the social distance between officers and men, sexual behavior, and the role of women aboard ships. For oppressed, discouraged, or simply bored whalemen, several escapes existed, from the rarest of all mutiny through labor protests of various types, to individual desertion or appeal to an American consul abroad. To each of these topics Busch devotes a chapter. He also provides glimpses of those occasional moments of relief such as a Fourth of July celebration and such somber moments as a death at sea.Fascinating details and original quotations from individual whalemen make this book more than a study of general trends. For anyone with even a casual interest in whaling, it is indispensable. Briton Cooper Busch is William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of History at Colgate University, where he has been chairman of the department and director of the division of social sciences. He is author of eight previous books in maritime and diplomatic history.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_social_history/1001/thumbnail.jp

    Giorgio Caproni alias Wilhelm Busch

Only Germanists associate Caproni’s name with his only translation from German, the Italian version of Max and Moritz’ illustrated stories by Wilhelm Busch (1865), which tell about the - sometimes even cruel - pranks made by two children against adults. Among many Italian translators, Caproni stands out for his fame as an author himself as well as a translator. This paper investigates whether and how his poetic activity influences this translation. Instead of concentrating on the difficulties of the source text, i.e. on the obstacles to overcome to make it accessible to a non-German-speaking public, the paper will highlight the creativity inherent to the target text, which is very strictly connected with Caproni’s other production, as it is proved by his writing style. Therefore, of particular interest are those points in which Caproni takes liberties by adapting the original to the target culture and, above all, to his poetic sensitivity, so that he becomes the co-author of a work which is known to lots of readers through his words

Expect the Unexpected: Organizational Purpose as Enabler of Serendipitous Impact

    No full text
Christian Busch, author of The Serendipity Mindset: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck, and Nele Terveen explain how purpose helps leaders connect the dots between grand challenges and strategic responses. When leaders expect the unexpected, the authors explain, they incent their stakeholders to embrace uncertainty so they can better guide their organizations through adversity and disruption. By leveraging the five practices of Serendipitous Impact (impact mission, impact leadership, impact governance, impact networks, and impact measurement) unexpected events can help leaders come up with solutions that often cannot be seen, let alone fully defined, in advance.https://www.cutter.com/journal/scaffolding-purpose-times-polycrisi

Mallet fracture: перелом И.Ф. P. Segond?

    No full text
Background. For several centuries, eponyms have been a convenient means of communication between clinicians. For some eponyms among modern surgeons, controversy over authors priority continues. There is still no consensus on the so-called mallet fracture. In domestic and foreign literature, there are several authors names for this fracture I.F. Bush fracture, W. Busch fracture, P. Segond fracture. The aim of the study is to collect the most reliable information about the history of the eponym of avulsion of the distal phalanx of the fingers at the site of attachment of the extensor tendon, the so-called mallet fracture, to determine and prove the priority of the true author of the eponym. Materials and Methods. A search for information was carried out in domestic and foreign publications, manuals on traumatology and orthopedics, periodicals, Internet resources (eLIBRARY, PubMed, Scholar Google). Results. The list of likely authors of mallet fracture includes three surgeons: Ivan F. Busch (17711843, Russia), Paul Ferdinand Segond (18511912, France), Karl David Wilhelm Busch (18261881, Germany). When analyzing primary sources, it was found that for the first time mallet fracture was described by the French surgeon Paul Ferdinand Segond in 1880. This fact was also recognized by the German surgeon W. Busch, who a year later published an article on this damage. In the well-known Guide to the Teaching of Surgery by Ivan F. Bush, published in the early 19th century, information about a fracture of the distal phalanx of the finger at the site of attachment of the extensor tendon was not found. Conclusion. Taking into account the publications known to date, mallet fracture should be called the Segond fracture.

It is hard to date and place this comic book. It is old enough to have cost one Deutsch Mark. There are sixteen pages, and both interior covers are used, too. The outer covers present FC. The texts are all written out in longhand. Fables take up one or two pages and are enhanced with simple, large drawings suitable for coloring with crayons. A good variety of fabulists appear here. We have LM from Aesop; Bewaffneter Friede in verse by Wilhelm Busch; Der Hund und das Pferd by Krylov; FS by La Fontaine; Zwei Ziegenböcke by K.D. Uschinskij; Der Schwan, der Hecht, und der Krebs by Krylov; Schönheit Allein Tut's Nicht (about the peacock wanting to be king) by Aesop; CJ by Krylov; Eule und Star by Busch; and DS by Phaedrus. The two by Busch are excellent. I look forward to enjoying more fables by Busch.Language note: GermanEntwurf: Eberhard Erns

Histórias ilustradas: Uma nova forma narrativa no século XIX (O exemplo de Wilhelm Busch)

    No full text
The focus of this article is the literary phenomenon of European illustrated stories in the 19th century, which set the basis for what was to become known as comic books in the following century. They represent a plurimedial text type that arose, at that period, as a result of the impact of scientific development on print media, introducing an innovative narrative form, which blends the expressiveness of literary discourse with the resources of graphic arts and new printing techniques. At that time, Wilhelm Busch could be regarded as the main author of that sort of text, and serves as an example of the expressive power of such illustrated stories.O presente artigo tem como centro o fenômeno das histórias ilustradas do século XIX.
