Although a social issue, juvenile delinquency still remains a very vague field. Early criminological research in the middle of the twentieth century stressed the role of parents in the upbringing of the child, while modern literature highlights the importance of the elements such as criminogenic setting and especially criminogenic peers. This doctoral thesis presents the results of SPMAD study (Study of Parental Monitoring and Adolescent Delinquency), a replication of the PADS+ study (Peterborough Adolescent Delinquency Study). Quantitative as well as qualitative research methods were employed to verify whether a link exists between parental monitoring/surveillance and adolescent delinquent acts. The study was conducted in 2011 in thirteen elementary schools and nine high schools in Ljubljana. It included surveys and interviews and a total of 818 surveys and interviews were collected. Of these, 409 participants attended the sixth class of primary school and 409 the first year of secondary school. The research results show that the crime committed was best predicted by the frequently used measurement tool first named "parental monitoring" and later renamed to "parental knowledge", since it measures how much parents know about the adolescent’s activities. This factor had an impact on the majority of regression models in both the primary school population, where it explained a quarter of variance of the dependent variable of alcohol intoxication in life, as well as in the high school population, where it explained almost a fifth of explained variance in the dependent variable of shoplifting and amphetamine use. In the primary school sample the second most significant factor “unsupervised leisure time with peers” had the greatest influence on the dependent variable of destroying other people\u27s property, while in the secondary school sample the greatest impact was observed on alcohol intoxication (it had a minor impact on arrests, fights, smoking, using drugs). Discipline, the third most relevant part of the questionnaire, based on the explained variance of the dependent variables, was defined as physical punishment in the primary school questionnaire, while in high school questionnaire it was identified as parental enforcement of consequences in the case of unwanted adolescent behaviour. In accordance with similar studies conducted abroad, discipline exerted statistically significant impact only on the secondary school sample (i.e. in the absence of questions about physical punishment) with the dependent variables of theft, extortion, and use of amphetamines. With factors of attachment to family and family support a significant impact on delinquency was not observed. A study of different methods of parental monitoring/surveillance and its impact on adolescent delinquency has not yet been made in Slovenia. This study also represents the first application of the PADS+ methodology in the country. The findings contribute to the enrichment of Slovene criminology field and can furthermore be applied in practice: in education, social work (working with adolescents), as well as justice system (dealing with adolescents)

Splitting of topological charge pumping in an interacting two-component fermionic Rice-Mele Hubbard model

A Thouless pump transports an integer amount of charge when pumping adiabatically around a singularity. We study the splitting of such a critical point into two separate critical points by adding a Hubbard interaction. Furthermore, we consider extensions to a spinful Rice-Mele model, namely a staggered magnetic field or an Ising-type spin coupling, further reducing the spin symmetry. The resulting models additionally allow for the transport of a single charge in a two-component system of spinful fermions, whereas in the absence of interactions, zero or two charges are pumped. In the SU(2)-symmetric case, the ionic Hubbard model is visited once along pump cycles that enclose a single singularity. Adding a staggered magnetic field additionally transports an integer amount of spin while the Ising term realizes a pure charge pump. We employ real-time simulations in finite and infinite systems to calculate the adiabatic charge and spin transport, complemented by the analysis of gaps and the many-body polarization to confirm the adiabatic nature of the pump. The resulting charge pumps are expected to be measurable in finite-pumping speed experiments in ultra-cold atomic gases, for which the SU(2) invariant version is the most promising path. We discuss the implications of our results for a related quantum-gas experiment by Walter et al. [arXiv:2204.06561].Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Revised version essentially as published. A few days after the flooding on 24th September 2009, which was declared a natural distaster, the staff at the Osservatorio Coste E Ambiente Naturale Sottomarino (O.C.E.A.N.S.) carried out investigations and instrumental surveys on La Cinta beach. The beach is located in the municipality of San Teodoro and is within the protected area Area Marina Protetta Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo; it extends N-S, is approximately 4km long and between 50 and 70m wide (FIG. 1). Following the intense rain, which continued for 9 days (168mm/24hr was recorded at the weather station in Siniscola on 24th September) and the flood wave, the ridge of the foredune, which defined the upper beach, collapsed forming 25 lagoon openings. New topographic-bathymetric and sedimentological-stratigraphic data were acquired, following the creation of a specific geodetic network. The study began within the agreement between O.C.E.A.N.S. and the province Olbia-Tempio and continues thanks to two Fellowship grants to young researchers and the Project RIAS (a study of Sardinia’s coastal systems and global climate change), funded by the Sardinian Regional government (co-fund PO Sardegna FSE 2007-2013 L.R.7/2007). The survey was carried out by taking topographic measurements referring to a specific geodetic network, based on the point IGM95 ETRF2000 n.182704, located in Murta Maria. The dry beach was tested using DGPS Thales ProMark3; points with the coordinates xyz were acquired at the frequency of 1 Hz. The Reson Navisound 215/DGPS Omnistar 8300HP interface echosound system using Reson PDS2000 navigation software, was used for the shoreface (De Muro S. & Pusceddu N., 2009). The survey was carried out on emerged and submerged beach at the same time. The limits of the morpho-sedimentological structures were identified and the profile of the lagoon and the new openings, caused by the flood, were defined. The survey covered the area of the beach from 3 m up to a depth of -12 m. The examination carried out a few days after the event allowed the variations in the dimensions and slope of the dry beach and shoreface to be calculated. It was also possible to determine the sedimentary volumes altered due to the event and to measure numerous morphological parameters (e.g. depth, width, axis of new channels, planimetrical layout of alluvial fan lobe, the flood event direction, etc). Seven stratigraphic logs were also carried out and sampling of the areas opened up by the flooding, in order to define the ancient coastal ridge. Digital Full HD images were acquired, taken from a helicopter and on field. From the data collected, models of wave motion and hydrodynamics were created using Delft3D software, modules WAVE and FLOW. The models were based on marine forecast data recorded in the area as well, and were gauged on observations and the new measurements in situ. The overflowing of the lagoon caused the breach of 25 openings on the drybeach. When the initial data were taken six were still open, with dimensions varying between 25-30m and depth between 1 to 4m (FIG 2). In the submerged beach the greatest variations were found immediately in front of the lagoon openings. Measurements have been taken repeatedly in the field over the year following the event and in-depth study has been carried out in order to examine the resilience of the system. A second digital model of drybeach and shoreface has been built and the hydrodynamic chart has been updated which is based on the Delf 3D model and on the new observations and measurements. The data taken in the second survey of measurements show that all the openings caused by the flooding had closed. The slope of the entire beach shows strong modifications in the dimension of the sand bars and troughs with relative hydrodynamic modification

Effect of disorder on topological charge pumping in the Rice-Mele model

    No full text
Recent experiments with ultracold quantum gases have successfully realized integer-quantized topological charge pumping in optical lattices. Motivated by this progress, we study the effects of static disorder on topological Thouless charge pumping. We focus on the half-filled Rice-Mele model of free spinless fermions and consider random diagonal disorder. We use both static and time-dependent simulations to characterize the charge pump. The set of measures that we compute in the instantaneous basis include the polarization, the entanglement spectrum, and the space-integrated local Chern marker. As a first main result, we conclude that the space-integrated local Chern marker is best suited for a quantitative determination of topological transitions in a disordered system. In the time-dependent simulations we use the time-integrated current to obtain the pumped charge in slowly periodically driven systems. As a second main result, we observe and characterize a disorder-driven breakdown of the quantized charge pump. There is an excellent agreement between the static and the time-dependent ways of computing the pumped charge. The topological transition occurs well in the regime where all states are localized on the given system sizes. This observation is consistent with previous studies and the topological transition is therefore not tied to a delocalization-localization transition of Hamiltonian eigenstates. For individual disorder realizations, the breakdown of the quantized pumping occurs for parameters where the spectral bulk gap inherited from the band gap of the clean system closes, leading to a globally gapless spectrum. As a third main result and with respect to the analysis of finite-size systems, we show that the disorder average of the bulk gap severely overestimates the stability of quantized pumping. A much better estimate is the typical value of the distribution of energy gaps, also called mode of the distribution. We discuss our results in the context of recent quantum-gas experiments that realized charge pumps
