Shams al-dim al-Sakhawi as a historian of the 9th/15th century : with an edition of that section of his chronicles (Wajiz al-kalam) covering the period 800-849 / 1397-1445
No full textAlthough a prolific writer of history, Sakhawi is, primarily, a
traditionist. As such, accuracy both in utterance and writing would,
by the very nature of his training, be his first objective.
Modern writers appear to have neglected the importance of his
contribution to the understanding of the history of his century.

is, therefore, strange that such a mine of information as Sakhawi's
writing presents has remained so long in oblivion.
In this thesis an attempt has been made to evaluate that contribution
together with an edition of part of his work.
The study has been divided into three sections, the first dealing
with Sakhawi’s life and times. This part of the study is based largely
on his autobiography which was written but a few months before he died.
During research no reference was discovered to this most informative
work.
The section falls into three chapters, the first of which endeavours
to show the political and educational aspects of Cairo during the early
part of Sakhawi's lifetime. Cairo was his native city and, as such,
made great impact on his early life.
In the second chapter the position of his family, his Shaykhs, the
academic journeys he made, his residence in Hijaz and the last phase of
his life are portrayed.
The third chapter deals with his activities as an adult, his reputation
as a traditionist together with a survey of his works as presented in
his autobiography.
In the second part, the study deals exclusively with Sakhawi as
a historian of the 9th/15th century. This part also is divided into
two chapters, the first of which considers the following aspects: -
I Sakawi's works on the century;
II His motives, methods and literary style and
III His treatment of the history of the century.
The second chapter collates Sakhawi's methods of selecting his
information and the painstaking efforts he made to verify them, together
with his historical achievements, while the last two topics endeavour to
evaluate his task as a historian in that century.
Section three presents the hitherto unedited part of Wajiz al-Kalam...
which deals with the history of the 9th/15th century. This section
also falls into the three divisions of preface, text and annotations.
The last divides again into two groups one of which deals with the
textual variants mentioned in the footnotes and the other attempts to
deal with the interpretation of most of the idiom, colloquial expressions
and the names of places and personalities mentioned in the supplement to
the text

No full textThis thesis analyses the British official attitudes and the gradual change of British policy towards Hungary and Hungarian revisionism in the period from the Anschluss in March 1938 to December 1941, when the British government declared war on Hungary. The primary focus of this thesis lies in the impact of Hungary`s territorial claims on British policy towards Hungary and Central Europe and upon the criteria Britain judged the territorial gains of Hungary between 1938 and 1941. This work is the result of the author`s research in British, American and Hungarian archives, along with his reflection on numerous documentary editions, diaries, memoirs and secondary sources. It aims to deepen our knowledge of Anglo-Hungarian relationship, British Central European policy and the British view of regional territorial disputes. At the same time, it is keen to dispel the myths and stereotypes of the British and Hungarian historiography, which have so far viewed Hungary as an unimportant factor in British Central European strategy
Genome-wide mapping of modifier chromosomal loci for human hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
No full textHypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease of mutant sarcomeric proteins (except for phenocopy). Cardiac hypertrophy is the clinical diagnostic hallmark of HCM and a major determinant of morbidity and mortality in various cardiovascular diseases. However, there is remarkable variability in expression of hypertrophy, even among HCM patients with identical causal mutations. We hypothesized modifier genes are partly responsible for the variation in hypertrophic expressivity. To map the modifier loci, we typed 811 short-tandem repeat markers (∼5 cMdense) in 100 members of an HCM family including 36 with the InsG791 mutation in MYBPC3. We performed oligogenic simultaneous segregation and linkage analyses using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods and detected linkage on 3q26.2 (180 cM), 10p13 (41 cM), 17q24 (108 cM) with log of the posterior placement probability ratio (LOP) of 3.51, 4.86 and 4.17, respectively, and suggestive linkage (LOP of 2.40) on 16q12.2 (73 cM). The effect sizes varied according to the modifier locus, age and sex. It ranged from ∼8 g shift in left ventricular mass for 10p13 locus heterozygosity for the common allele to ∼90 g shift for 3q26.2 locus homozygosity for the uncommon allele. Refining the 10p13 locus restricted the candidate modifier genes to ITGA8 , C10orf97 (CARP) and PTER. ITGA8 and CARP are biologically plausible candidates as they are implicated in cardiac fibrosis and apoptosis, respectively. Since cardiac hypertrophy is a major determinant of total and cardiovascular mortality and morbidity, regardless of the etiology, identification of the specific modifier genes could have significant prognostic and therapeutic implications for various cardiovascular diseases. © The Author 2007. ensuring outputs are appropriate to social scientists, managing the transition from research
projects to service and embedding software and data within a wider infrastructural
framework. We also provide pointers to related work where issues which have ramifications
for this and similar initiatives are being addressed

al-Misbāh fī al-Nahw By Nāsir al-Dīn al-Mutarrizī al-Nahwī (d. 610/1213) A Critical Edition of the Text with the Life History of the Author
No full textNāsir al-Dīn al-Mutarrizī al-Nahwī (d.610/1213) was one of the most renowned figures in the field of Arabic Grammar. He has left an indelible mark on the world of Arabic language and literature. He is also known as the successor of al-Zamakhsharī.
He wrote a number of books but his al-Misbāh fī al-Nahw gained prominence at a level that no other book in this field could claim to achieve. For this reason, a great number of commentaries have been written in every age, of which the most famous are al-Daw and Khulāsat al-I‘rāb written by Tāj al-Dīn al-Isfrā’īnī and ‘Abd al- Karīm al-Tūsī (better known as Hājjī Bābā) respectively. Moreover, its translation into other languages also demonstrates its value as a useful book.
Although al-Misbāh has been edited on more than one occasion, the published editions do not fulfil the needs and requirements of modern academic research criteria. The basic aim of this thesis is to present this book with a current modern research style so that the students, teachers and ordinary readers of Arabic language and literature may benefit from this work.
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the life history of the author and his other works. A brief note of the environment under which he grew up (generally referred to as the ‘Seljuk’ period) is also included in this part.
The second part consists of a text edition that deals with the derivation (Takhrīj) of syntactical issues together with the differing opinions of grammarians on syntactical/grammatical issues. This part also proffers the idiomatic English translation of al-Misbāh

Kilka uwag o języku w polskim przekładzie „ Ulissesa" Joyce' a (na podstawie VII epizodu)
No full textIt is commonly known that 'Ulysses' presents a challengeis to translators (Senn 1972) and that the rhetoric episode 'Aeolus' abounds in different language games. Some of them, such as the hypocoristic Doughy Daw (cf. its paronym Doughty Dawson), thehomoioteleuton mouth south: tomb womb, the tautogram Dear Dirty Dublin, the anagram feetstoops, the metagram clamn dever, the paronomasia Rose of Castile, and the palindromes Madam, I'm Adam. And Able was I ere I saw Elba, are analyzed in translation. The author considers not only Polish, but also German, F rench, Russian and Byelorussian versions of 'Ulysses'. While Goyert's translation is very literał, Słomczyński's version is not literał. It is often an attempt at translating the idea of the language game rather than the language game itself, which would be utterly impossible
