The M, E, and N structural proteins of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus are required for efficient assembly, trafficking, and release of virus-like particles
Copyright @ 2008 American Society for Microbiology.The production of virus-like particles (VLPs) constitutes a relevant and safe model to study molecular determinants of virion egress. The minimal requirement for the assembly of VLPs for the coronavirus responsible for severe acute respiratory syndrome in humans (SARS-CoV) is still controversial. Recent studies have shown that SARS-CoV VLP formation depends on either M and E proteins or M and N proteins. Here we show that both E and N proteins must be coexpressed with M protein for the efficient production and release of VLPs by transfected Vero E6 cells. This suggests that the mechanism of SARS-CoV assembly differs from that of other studied coronaviruses, which only require M and E proteins for VLP formation. When coexpressed, the native envelope trimeric S glycoprotein is incorporated onto VLPs. Interestingly, when a fluorescent protein tag is added to the C-terminal end of N or S protein, but not M protein, the chimeric viral proteins can be assembled within VLPs and allow visualization of VLP production and trafficking in living cells by state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Hybrid Numerical Analysis of a high-speed non-volatile Suspended Gate Silicon Nanodot Memory
We present a hybrid numerical analysis of a high-speed and non-volatile suspended gate silicon nanodot memory (SGSNM) which co-integrates a nano-electromechanical (NEM) control gate with a MOSFET as a readout element and silicon nanodots as a floating gate. A hybrid NEM-MOS circuit simulation is developed by taking account of the pull-in/pull-out operation of the suspended gate and electron tunnelling processes through the tunnel oxide layer as behavioural models. The signals for programming, erasing and reading are successfully achieved at circuit level simulation. The programming and erasing times are found as short as 2.5 nsec for a SGSNM with a 1-?m-long suspended gate, which is a summation of the mechanical pull-in/pull-out times and the tunnel charging/discharging times
Variable structure model for flow-induced tonal noise control with plasma actuators
The objective of this work was to study the effect of plasma actuators in attenuating low-speed flow-induced cavitytones from a control point of view by employing techniques from classical control. A modification of the existingphysics-based linear model produced a new variable structure model in which a plasma actuator was regarded as alinear gain. The parameters of the overall model working at two operating voltages were identified usingexperimental data. The effects of the plasma actuator control at other various operating voltages were thus able to bepredicted using linear interpolation. The good agreement between the predicted and the measured data supportedthe proposed variable structure model, inside of which plasma actuators affected the damping of cavity pressureoscillations proportionally to the applied voltage to reduce flow-induced tonal noise. With the proposed variablestructure model the system stability controlled by plasma actuators at various operating voltages was ensured, thus aclosed-loop control method could be applied without leading to instability. A simple proportional integral derivativecontroller was implemented. Results show the potential of a closed-loop method by increasing system powerefficiency

Uniqueness of entire ground states for the fractional plasma problem
We establish uniqueness of vanishing radially decreasing entire solutions, which we call ground states, to some semilinear fractional elliptic equations. In particular, we treat the fractional plasma equation and the supercritical power nonlinearity. As an application, we deduce uniqueness of radial steady states for nonlocal aggregation-diffusion equations of Keller-Segel type, even in the regime that is dominated by aggregation

Autoantibodies to Argonaute 2 (Su antigen)
Like many other classical autoantibodies in systemic rheumatic diseases, anti-Su antibodies were originally defined by the double immunodiffusion assay in the early 80s. However, despite its high prevalence, only a few reports on anti-Su were published in the following years and the progress in characterizing the target antigens and clinical significance was slow, probably due to its inconsistent or poor reactivity in other standard immunoassays. In 2006 the target antigen was identified as the microRNA (miRNA)-binding protein Argonaute 2 (Ago2). Ago2 is a key component of the RNA-induced silencing complex enriched in cytoplasmic foci called GW bodies. Due to preferential reactivity of human autoantibodies with native antigens, immunoprecipitation is the only method to reliably detect anti-Su/Ago2 antibodies. Anti-Su/Ago2 does not appear to have disease specificity since it is found in 10-20% of patients with various rheumatic diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, and Sjögren's syndrome, as well as apparently healthy individuals at lower prevalence. The clinical significance and the mechanism of production of anti-Su/Ago2 remains to be clarified

A Pre-filter Enabling Fast Frontal Face Detection
We present a novel pre-filtering technique that identifies probable frontal illuminated face regions in colour images regardless of translation, orientation, and scale. The face candidate regions are normalised and provide the basis for face verification using published face detection algorithms. The technique focuses on a fast search strategy to locate potential eye-pairs in an image or video frame. The eye-pair candidates indicate areas that may contain faces. Scale and orientation is inferred from the eye-pairs, and a neural network is used to confirm the normalised face candidates
