Bras are not for burning: the bra and young urban women in Delhi and Bombay

    No full text
Scholars have analysed the meanings of western outer-clothes worn by women in India, however these studies seldom discuss the semi-hidden bra. Whereas the panty through the ‘Pink Chaddis’ campaign has been used as a symbolic tool of female power and resistance in India, the power meanings of the bra remain ambiguous. Bras have not been discussed as symbolic markers of female empowerment like chaddis, nor can be assumed objects of male oppression as in the history of western feminism. This chapter explores the bra and its proximity to young (18–24 year old) urban Indian women’s bodies; the ambiguity of its hidden yet publicly viewed nature which discloses tensions of the sexualised female body and changing ideals of Indian femininities that outer western garments cannot always reveal. I discuss how the bra lends insight into Indian women’s bodies as paradoxical spaces of public and private power as India begins to rapidly urbanise. A power-play between that of an increase in the moral policing of urban Indian women’s sartorial identities and the emerging bi-cultural youth identities resisting these moral codes of dressing.Taken from a qualitative study between 2010–2014, the author discusses how the bra in India centres on the discourse of shame and the anxieties of western modernity recycled from the Indian independence movement. Author reveals how patriarchal codes of shame are questioned by the symbolic meanings of power that young urban Indian women attach to their bras

The development of science and technology can dynamically be a turning point for government research and development (R & D) organizations in a country. A weakness in one aspect, content or implementation of R&D policy, will determine how the researcher’s capability to perform well in order to answer the dynamic development of the world. Assuming that the state has given the best policy wherever possible to optimize the role of researchers in the workforce, then the question is how the policy is implemented. Based on this reason, it is become important for making a study on the policy implementation of researchers in Indonesian. Through this study, the author try to capture the description of policy implementation of researchers at 17 government agencies in 2012. The evaluation study using the model of Stake’s Countenance. This model produces 12 aspects and 30 sub aspects. The data was collected through observations, interviews, document analysis, and questionnaires. The results showed that 5 aspects in high category, 5 in medium category, and 2 in low category. On the sub-aspects, 16 is high, 8 were moderate, and 6 is low. Lowest aspects are the development of science and scientific awards

The mission of the special library for government agencies is to provide library material and access to information for the parent institution, while one of its functions is to develop collections that support the performance of the parent institution so that the library plays an important role in research activities at the Center for the Conservation of Plants-Bogor Botanical Gardens (PKT-KRB) LIPI. The natural beauty of Papua attracts researchers both from within and outside the country to conduct research on its biodiversity, including researchers from PKT-KRB LIPI, therefore libraries are supposed to provide a collection of plants in Papua that can be used as a reference for research activities. The purpose of this study is to provide information about the library collections in PKT-KRB LIPI, especially those related to plants in Papua. Through literature study, the author explores the collections in the library to find out what collections are contained in the library which contains information on plants in Papua to be discussed in detail. The results of the study show that the number of collections containing information on plants in Papua in the period of publication from 1985-2019 includes: 17 books, 10 travel reports, and 6 proceedings. Suggestions for further study are to focus on one of the endemic plants in Papua with literature studies not only on collections in the library but extending to the results of research by PKT-KRB LIPI research staff

Integrated data base is a data base records bibliographic data of several types of document like textbook, periodicals, proceedings, research report, thesis, and article. Purposes of this study were to investigate document type description and searching strategy in integrated data base of online public access catalogs (OPAC) in PDII-LIPI, and to know user opinion about that data base existence. It used observation and interviews to 100 data base users to collect data. Result of this study stated that document type description in OPAC was not indexed, so users couldn't do information searching of special type of document directly in the data base. There was only one method could be used to search information of special type of document. User could select it from some information records on the computer screen as the result of document title, author name or subject searching in the data base. This information access method was not efficient. So document type description and indexing was an important factor and should be done in information retrieval system using integrated data base. But respondent majority (84%) in PDII-LIPI stated that they liked using separated data base to search information of special type of document.<br /

DUPLICATION IN INDONESIAN JOURNAL ARTICLE: QUALITY ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
There are several cases of duplicate articles in Indonesian scientific journal. This study provide inputs tothe journal publisher in Indonesia to prevent duplication. This paper conducted analysis of quality articles andjournals, data obtained from the Indonesian Scientific Journal Database (ISJD) and printed journals in PDIILIPI. The results show (1) the duplication are written by the same author, but published in different journals, in thesame or different year; (2) articles published in the same journal but in different volume; (3) articles from a similarresearch team, but published as sole author under the name of each member of the group. Most journals alreadyinclude a requirement that the article submitted has not been published in other journals. This paper suggests inorder to avoid duplication, each journal should add the prerequisite, such as authors should not submit the articleto other publishers before the selection process has been completed. In addition, to address duplication, whilethe selection is in process, publisher should conduct a benchmarking script analysis to search articles that havebeen published. ISJD, is a database for comparing articles and managed by PDII LIPI. Currently, ISJD alreadymanages more than 5,000 journals with more than 140,000 articles. This study is expected to provide input to thejournal publisher in Indonesia, so there is no duplication of publication of the article

Non-violence and truth are one of the most indomitable elements of the philosophy propounded by Mahatma Gandhi. It was the approach which was accepted as only logical approach to morality by Martin Luther King. Gandhi was a grand advocate of truth, non-violence and was very buoyant about their role in the lives of the masses in order to make the world a sustainable and harmonious place. According to Gandhi non-violence is the ultimate way to discover truth and this is for the same reason both of them are knotted in such a way it is practically impossible to disengage them. The paper, thus, encapsulates the hidden layers of the Gandhain philosophy called Satyagraha along with a live interview of Gandhi with Sir Chimanlal

Three specimens of Plectranthias retrofasciatus Fourmanoir and Randall, 1979 and one specimen of P. randalli Fourmanoir and Rivaton, 1980 were collected by first author from fish market, Bitung, North Sulawesi on June and September 2010. The specimens were deposited at LBRC-F, the reference collection of LIPI Bitung, Technical Implementation Unit for Marine Biota Conservation, Research Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Bitung, Indonesia. Plectranthias retrofasciatus is closely related to P. megalophthalmus and P. knappi, in sharing some morphological characters as snout length and interorbital width, while P. randalli differs to other species by having a moderate deep body proportion. Initially these species known only from New Caledonia for P. retrofasciatus and Chesterfield Islands and southern Taiwan for P. randalli respectively. The two species of anthiine fishes collected from Bitung, Indonesia bringing the total number of species of this genus known in Indonesia to six

Dignity and empowerment: An exploration of the microcredit experiences of women in rural Bangladesh

    Get PDF
Modern microcredit , as a tool for economic and social development , emerged with the assumption that it would promote women’s empowerment. Some researchers have found that microcredit has had a significant amount of success. However, some of these supportive studies have also ignored the s ubjective history of the participants. A second critical view of microcredit presents the practice as a Western World notion which exploits women as a tool of the market economy in order to gain profit , arguing that it has failed to provide an alternative to women’s vulnerability and survival. This article focuses on the drawbacks of both approaches. This research is based on sampling and in- depth interviews conducted by the author, using a semi -structured questionnaire. This methodol ogical choice allowed the author to adopt a subjective view within the studied phenomenon, and to understand the social world associated with that phenomenon. The aim of this methodological choice wa s to apply a n on- going awareness and assessment on the process and findings of the research. Further more , t he methodological choices allowed the participants to express their own definitions of dignity and empowerment in their lives, and the way they have negotiate d their perso nal lives between perceived meaning s, and the assumptive me aning s of empowerment through the microcredit programs they utilized . The result s demonstrate d that family life coupled with financial progress was the first and foremost meaning of dignity for all the participants. Additional definitions for dignity in life also emerged. After experiencing the microcredit program handled by the Grameen Bank , the results of a positive experience using mi crocredit increased their feelings of dignity as they had defined it. The remaining participants experienced microcredit with feelings of risk, stress, shame, marginalization, vulnerability, and other challenges. Rec ommendations advocate for skill -based interventions and/or the creation of alternative ways to promote participants notions of dignity and empowerment.publishedVersio
