Healing beyond the scars of female genital mutilation (FGM): the experiences of Somali women in England with therapeutic interventions
A research portfolio submitted to the University of Wolverhampton for the Professional Doctorate: Counselling Psychology. This thesis explores the therapeutic experiences of Somali women in the UK who have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) or FGM reversal. It focuses on participants' perceptions of psychological interventions and, from these experiences, assesses the cultural competence of therapeutic interventions, addressing a significant gap in the existing literature. By examining how FGM survivors engage with various therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), it seeks to evaluate the efficacy of these interventions in addressing FGM-related trauma.
Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study explores the lived
experiences of seven participants, identifying superordinate themes related to the
psychological impact of FGM, the therapeutic process, and therapist characteristics and exchanges. Integrating Erikson’s Developmental Theory offers insights into how trauma affects individuals at different life stages, with long-term and short-term consequences. The research also provides a framework for understanding the developmental impact of FGM, emphasising the importance of culturally informed, trauma-sensitive interventions that align with the psychosocial stages of development.
The findings begin to highlight the inadequacy of current therapeutic practices, which often fail to address the complex psychological, sexual, and relational trauma associated with FGM. By proposing interventions that are attentive to the survivor’s whole life through following therapeutic trajectories across the life-course, this research advances knowledge of therapies beyond CBT. Consequently, the research offers recommendations for developing more culturally informed and trauma-sensitive interventions that better meet the needs of FGM survivors. This contributes to the field of counselling psychology by advancing knowledge tailored to FGM-related mental health issues and informing the development of effective therapeutic frameworks
Hostile Environments: Mould, Race and Blame amidst Birmingham’s Housing Crisis
The UK Government Home Office’s ‘hostile environment’ policy is aimed at making it difficult for migrants to stay in Britain. This approach has combined securitised practices of bordering and policing, with policies which have hollowed out state provisioning at community level. The purpose of this research was to understand how the hostile environment is experienced in the mouldy homes of Somali families who inhabit temporary or precarious accommodation in Birmingham. We conducted biographic interviews that focused on experiences of multiple forms of housing and creative workshops with more than 50 Somali women, and interviews with nodal figures within the housing ecology. We found that Somali families who have been unhomed livein overcrowded, private and temporary accommodations of varying states of disrepair. When these houses begin to make them sick, blame is apportioned to their quotidian acts of care and homemaking such that they encounter mould as a form of corporeal punishment for seeking state resources. We conclude by arguing that mould acts as a material and metaphor that brings attention to forms of racialised blamecaused byhostile environment and housing policies. We show how the subjects of such policies mobilise their bodies as sites of evidence to ‘hail’ the state
The right to complain can’t solve the housing crisis
Awaab’s Law, that has just come into effect, gives tenants of social housing new powers against neglectful landlords. But Elizabeth Storer and Nikita Simpson warn that the right to complain, while a step in the right direction, has limited powers amidst a full blown housing crisis

Listening to Housing Distress: A methodology for understanding housing and mental health in context
This report presents a conceptual and methodological approach for understanding the mental health impacts of the UK’s housing crisis. The UK is currently in the midst of a housing crisis, felt across private and social tenancies. This crisis, which has been long in the making, is linked not only to rising rates of homelessness, but also to increased rates of occupation of sub standard dwellings, and the increased use of temporary forms of accommodation by local authorities. A crisis of housing is also a crisis of health. Existing studies indicate strong connections between residence in poor quality and insecure housing and declining mental health. Given the scale of the housing crisis, and given evidence of its deeply uneven health outcomes, this report suggests we may not have the theoretical tools to understand links between housing and mental health. We present a conceptual and methodological approach to understand ‘Housing Distress’. Developed from ethnographic and participatory research with a collective of Somali women from Birmingham , we suggest that co-produced approaches which centre bodily and mental distress might provide a means of understanding historical and contemporary connections between regimes of un-homing and mental ill-health. This is a joint report authored by the Housing, Migration and Health Lab (HoMH Lab). It features researchers from the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, SOAS and the School of Geography, Queen Mary University of London. Support for this research which forms this report was provided by SOAS, and Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, LSE
Securitized trust: on the multiple guises of the UK policy agenda during the Covid-19 pandemic
Against the backdrop of the uncertainty that characterized the COVID-19 pandemic, trust emerged as a key term employed by public officials and policymakers in the UK to represent the existence or dissolution of state–society relationships. Despite its ubiquity, trust remained ambiguous in its precise meaning and multiple in its usage. Through an analysis of key policy documents published since the onset of the pandemic, we look beyond the definition of trust to explore its various roles in the UK policymaking at the national level. Drawing on the work of Vivien Schmidt (2008, 2010), we bring attention to the relationship between the cognitive (or instrumental) and normative (or valued-based) functions of trust in contradicting domains of community and security. We argue that the multiplicity of trust in policy discourse creates a false unity across conflictual domains of the government agenda, obfuscating the workings of an increasingly austere state. ‘Securitized trust’, we propose, is produced when the language of trust is mobilized through policies that work to enforce compliance with government agendas, to monitor organizing at the community level, to manage personal data, and to enhance policing
‘Fighting him’: Following distress in hostile housing regimes
This study explores the psychological impacts of the UK housing crisis among a collective of Somali women in Birmingham. We build a framework from anthropological theories of social distress, applied through a participatory methodology consisting of housing biographies and therapeutic workshops. Research was conducted between June 2022-December 2023. Our findings reveal the cumulative forms of distress generated through poor housing, eviction and placement in temporary forms of accommodation. Such distress was articulated in multiple genres which spanned somatic, social reproductive, bureaucratic and psychological harms. Participants pushed back on biomedical categories of mental ill-health in relation to housing distress. We argue that hostile migratory contexts contour the expression of suffering generated through poor housing, particularly in relation to women's mental health. We suggest that ethnographic approaches can lead us beyond social determinants models, revealing forms of distress which accumulate across and within policy domains.
