Cytochrome oxidase subunit VI of Trypanosoma brucei is imported without a cleaved presequence and is developmentally regulated at both RNA and protein levels
Mitochondrial respiration in the African trypanosome undergoes dramatic developmental stage regulation. This requires co-ordinated control of components encoded by both the nuclear genome and the kinetoplast, the unusual mitochondrial genome of these parasites. As a model for understanding the co-ordination of these genomes, we have examined the regulation and mitochondrial import of a nuclear-encoded component of the cytochrome oxidase complex, cytochrome oxidase subunit VI (COXVI). By generating transgenic trypanosomes expressing intact or mutant forms of this protein, we demonstrate that COXVI is not imported using a conventional cleaved presequence and show that sequences at the N-terminus of the protein are necessary for correct mitochondrial sorting. Analyses of endogenous and transgenic COXVI mRNA and protein expression in parasites undergoing developmental stage differentiation demonstrates a temporal order of control involving regulation in the abundance of, first, mRNA and then protein. This represents the first dissection of the regulation and import of a nuclear-encoded protein into the cytochrome oxidase complex in these organisms, which were among the earliest eukaryotes to possess a mitochondrion
On resolution to Wu's conjecture on Cauchy function's exterior singularities
This is a series of studies on Wu's conjecture and on its resolution to be presented herein. Both are devoted to expound all the comprehensive properties of Cauchy's function f(z) (z = x + iy) and its integral J[f(z)] equivalent to (2 pi i)(-1) closed integral(C)f(t)(t - z)(-1)dt taken along the unit circle as contour C, inside which (the open domain D (+)) f(z) is regular but has singularities distributed in open domain D (-) outside C. Resolution is given to the inverse problem that the singularities of f(z) can be determined in analytical form in terms of the values f(t) of f(z) numerically prescribed on C (|t| = 1), as so enunciated by Wu's conjecture. The case of a single singularity is solved using complex algebra and analysis to acquire the solution structure for a standard reference. Multiple singularities are resolved by reducing them to a single one by elimination in principle, for which purpose a general asymptotic method is developed here for resolution to the conjecture by induction, and essential singularities are treated with employing the generalized Hilbert transforms. These new methods are applicable to relevant problems in mathematics, engineering and technology in analogy with resolving the inverse problem presented here
Dr. Biman Bagchi a bibliometric portrait
Analyses bibliometrically 226 publications [Papers Published in journals-220, thesis [others 4] by Biman Bagchi, a renowned physical chemist from India, published during 1981 to 2002. The first contribution of the author was in 1981 at the age of 27. The number of his contributions in a year peaked in 1999 and 2002 when it touched 19. The author is highly productive in as much as on average the author has produced 10 papers per year. In the byline of authorship, Bagchi occupies the first authorship position in 69 cases. His collaborator A. Chandra occupies the first authorship position in 30 papers thus becoming Bagchi's closest collaborator. The journal has been the most preferred channel of communication of the author in as much as 220 papers out of 226 have been praced in journals. J. Chem. Phys. is found to be the most preferred journal that carried 91 papers of the author, followed by Chem. Phys. Lett. (21 papers). J. Phys. Chem. (19 papers), Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. - Chem. Sci. (13 papers), and others. Of the papers, 179 received 4030 citations and 47 received no citations. It is expected that more than 20 uncited papers till 2002 will receive citations in future. Three papers of the author have received more than 200 citations each, and another three received between 100-200 citations each. The number of papers receiving 10 citations or more total 92. On four different years the scientist has received more than 300 citations and his citation rate per paper has peaked at 18.98. The article shows with a concrete example the growth, peaking and declining of citation rate. A few new terms such as citation gain, citation loss, gaining citation rate and losing citation rate have been introduced and described
Cutting'aesthetic teeth' : Flannery O'Connor's habit of art
Shoe Material Effects on Foot Temperature During Treadmill Running
Mentor: David S. SenchinaRunning shoes are made from a variety of materials such as leather or mesh. Material type and assembly
likely impact on foot heat dynamics during running. The purpose of this study was to investigate
how foot temperature during running was modulated by different shoes. All protocols were approved
by the Drake IRB (ID 2009-10088). Eleven male subjects (21.6 ± 1.7 yrs) completed four 10-minute
running trials at self-selected but constant speeds on a treadmill in four different running shoes (two
mesh and two leather). Foot temperature was recorded at two sites on top of the right foot arch
(against the skin and between the sock and shoe) for the 10 minutes during running and 5 minutes of
resting recovery post-running. Heart rate and subjective ratings of perceived comfort and heat were
recorded throughout. There were no statistical differences in foot heat accumulation during running
between the shoes. During the 5 minutes post-exercise, three of the shoe models accommodated heat
dissipation whereas foot temperature in the fourth model significantly increased during rest (all
39
p<0.031). Temperature was always greater at the skin site versus the sock site, but fluctuation patterns
between the two sites were congruent. Subjects rated the mesh shoes as more comfortable than the
leather shoes (p=0.016); curiously, however, there were no differences in heat perception across shoes
(p=0.184). These results suggest that (a) shoe material influences foot heat dynamics during and immediately
after running and (b) subjects’ perceptions of foot temperature may not coincide with actual
foot temperature.Drake University, College of Arts & Sciences; College of Education; College of Journalism & Mass Communication; College of Business & Public Administration; College of Pharmacy & Health Science

Uncertainty and sensitivity in global carbon cycle modelling.
This paper summarises the results obtained from a stochastic sensitivity study in the area of global carbon cycle modelling. In particular, it outlines how Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) techniques and associated Generalised Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) have been applied to a modified box-diffusion model. Using parametric and input uncertainty measures derived from independent sources, the analysis shows that the model produces an ensemble response for atmospheric CO2 whose mean evolution is reasonably consistent with that observed over the industrial period (1765 to 1990). However, the situation is more ambiguous in relation to the amplitude distribution of the stochastic realisations: here, there is a larger than expected variance arising from the assumed uncertainty, although this may be due to unavoidable limitations in the assumptions about parameteric uncertainty used in the MCS analysis. The analysis also shows that the a priori model response is less consistent with 13C measurements and not at all consistent with the 14C observations, while GSA suggests that, from over 20 model parameters, only a small number have a statistically significant effect on the model response in 1990. In addition, the results from MCS, using the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Scenario IS92a inputs, demonstrate that the uncertainties in the projections of the CO2 concentrations using this model are significantly higher than those suggested so far using deterministic methods. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the stochastic methodology are discussed
Composite materials dynamic fracture studies by generalized Shmuely difference algorithm
The generalized Shmuely Difference Algorithm (GSDA) is presented here to analyze the dynamic fracture performance of orthogonal-anisotropic composite materials, such as glass fibre reinforced phenolplast. The difference recurrence Formulae and boundary condition difference extrapolation formulae are derived and programmed. The dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIF) of the isotropic and anisotropic centrally cracked plates are computed respectively using GSDA and compared with that published previously. GSDA is proved effective and reliable. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
