Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Get PDFThe relevance of the study lies in the fact that the article addresses the challenges of understanding the procedure for protecting intellectual property rights through an atypical method, namely, invalidating intellectual property rights. Special attention is paid to the judicial and extrajudicial procedures for protecting intellectual property rights, in which such a method of protection as invalidating intellectual property rights is implemented. The problems of implementing the construction of “invalidity of intellectual property rights” in the extrajudicial procedure for protecting intellectual property rights are outlined. Special attention is paid to the protection of intellectual property rights in the procedure for the activities of the Appellate Chamber of the National Intellectual Property Office. The purpose of the article is to outline the main problems associated with the use of such an unconventional method of protection as invalidating intellectual property rights in the judicial and extrajudicial procedure, taking into account scientific achievements and regulatory legal acts. To achieve the study's goal, the following methods were employed: formal-logical analysis, generalization, linguistic analysis, and the comparative law method. In the process of the study, the following results were obtained: the outline of the lack of proper correlation between the binding norms of the Civil Code of Ukraine and the norms of special laws in the field of intellectual property, which should, in essence, operate in a logical systemic connection, was clarified; applying the criterion of temporal characteristics and the comparative method to the limitation period and the 9-month limitation period (in the out-of-court procedure for the protection of rights), it was clarified that the latter should be considered as a special limitation period, like a special limitation period; changing the paradigm in special laws in the field of intellectual property in favor of a single regulatory approach to the division into types (general and special) of the considered limitation periods, which are aimed at limiting the temporal possibility of implementing the construction of "recognition of rights to an invention as invalid", will allow unifying both scientific positions and simplifying the practice of applying different procedures for the protection of intellectual property rights.Актуальність дослідження зумовлена тим, що стаття присвячена проблемам розуміння порядку захисту прав інтелектуальної власності із застосуванням такого нетипового способу захисту права, як визнання недійсними прав інтелектуальної власності. Окрема увага присвячена судовому та позасудовому порядкам захисту прав інтелектуальної власності, в яких реалізується такий спосіб захисту як визнання недійсними прав інтелектуальної власності. Окреслено проблеми реалізації конструкції «недійсність прав інтелектуальної власності» в позасудовому порядку захисту прав інтелектуальної власності. Звернено окрему увагу на захист прав інтелектуальної власності в порядку діяльності Апеляційної палати НОІВ. Мета статті полягає у тому, що з огляду на наукові здобутки та нормативно-правові акти окреслюються основні проблеми, що повʼязані із застосуванням такого нетрадиційного способу захисту, як визнання недійсними права інтелектуальної власності у судовому та позасудовому порядку. Для досягнення мети дослідження було використано методи: формально-логічний, узагальнення, лінгвістичного аналізу, порівняльно-правовий метод. У процесі дослідження були отримані наступні результати: зʼясовано нарис відсутності належної кореляції між відсильною нормами ЦК України та нормами спеціальних законів у сфері інтелектуальної власності які мають, по суті, діяти у логічному системному звʼязку; застосовуючи критерій темпоральної ознаки та порівняльний метод до позовної давності та присічного строку в 9 місяців (у позасудовому порядку захисту права), зʼясовано, що останній слід розглядати як спеціальний присічний строк, на кшталт спеціальної позовної давності; зміна парадигми в спеціальних законах у сфері інтелектуальної власності на користь єдиного нормативного підходу до поділу на види (загальні та спеціальні), розглядуваних присічних строків, які спрямовані на обмеження темпоральної можливості реалізації конструкції «визнання прав на винахід недійсними», дозволить уніфікувати, як наукові позиції, так і спростити практику застосування різних порядків захисту прав інтелектуальної власності
