Budapester Topographien in den Romanen von Richard Wagner, Cătălin Dorian Florescu und Peter Rosenthal
This article traces patterns of engaging with Budapest‘s topographies in the auto-fictional works by Richard Wagner, Cătălin Dorian Florescu und Peter Rosenthal. Through a dialogical reading of their novels, the article highlights the links and overlaps between the genre of autofiction and space. The article argues that through mapping fictional settings and routes on a real map of Budapest, one may explore the intersection of literature and geography and the ways in which space influences the movement and behavior of the characters
Afetos e sentidos no conto “11. September”, de Catalin Dorian Florescu
O conto “11.
The four novels of Cătălin Dorian Florescu (Wunderzeit, Der kurze Weg nach Hause, Der blinde Masseur, Zaira) analysed here are interpreted in relation to the chronotope, a term developed by Michail Bachtin meaning the connectedness of time and space in narrative. Space knows two opposite dimensions in Florescu’s works: the West (Switzerland, USA) and the East (Romania). The Romanian space is represented by three different images corresponding to three different periods: Romania between the two world wars, during the communist period and after 1989. The main characters are Romanians who leave their country of origin during the communist period, hoping that they will find a better life in the West. After the revolt in 1989, the characters return to the space of their childhood, where they could find themselves and happiness once again. There are analyzed different aspects of the aesthetic space Romania: exotic space, space of discovery of oneself, spiritual space of traditions, but also space of disappointment and of perils. Space is in close connection with movement, the movement of the protagonists from one dimension to another, which is also the basis of the plot
„Pssst. Gebrauche deine Augen, Einstein”. Keine Rückbindungen an ein Wunderland im Roman Wunderzeit von Cătălin Dorian Florescu
The novel Wunderzeit is based on true events. Cătălin Dorian Florescu fictionalizes aspects of his own family history. The story is told from the perspective of a fictional teenager Alin who looks back at his own childhood. The first two chapters of the novel are centered on the perception of colors and are packed with rich imagery around three prevalent colors: yellow, red and black. These colors draw the reader’s attention to symbolic objects from the past: yellow was the shield on the road to freedom. Vivid red was the color of fresh and tasty tomatoes on the screen of a Grundig-TV. Red was the color of angry faces; red was the color of wounden faces. The scary flag of tyranny was red. Full of darkness is the experience of Alin and his friend on a black roof. As the story begins to develop, the narrator Alin leads us to believe that the earlier days of his life have been full of wonderful magical twists. In fact no altered perception in a traditional, romantic, dreamy sort of way is allowed. Homeland was no wonderland. Alin is not a victim of distorted sensory perceptions during trauma and stress. Habitualized coolness and good humour are his secret weapons against collective insanity
The present contribution deals with the three most recent novels of the Romanian-born Swiss Author Catalin Dorian Florescu: Zaira [Zaira] (2008), Jacob beschließt zu lieben [Jacob Decides to Love] (2011) and Der Mann, der das Glück bringt [The Man who Brings Happiness] (2016). The author unfolds in these novels family sagas spanning centuries which make the destiny of migrants between the poles of east and west a subject of discussion. In contrast to Florescu’s three former novels the reader can detect in these family novels the tendency towards a folkloristic presentation of a multicultural ambience at the expense of an intercultural involvement in the narrative depiction
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
