Supporting clients via narrative storytelling and artificial intelligence: a practitioner guide for career development professionals
Purpose: in this practitioner-focused essay, we combine traditional narrative storytelling approaches with Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) innovative abilities to enable career development professionals to support individuals across their lifespan.Design/methodology/approach: we propose a three-phase career exploration approach, developed and tested in a real-world setting for career development professionals to support their clients to consider various career-related options as well as identify strengths and opportunities for personal development. Findings: in phase one, the client recounts 7–10 positive narrative stories about engaging in activities they enjoyed. In phase two, the career development professional uses AI with tailored prompts to generate a personalised client report based on these narrative stories. In phase three, the report serves as the basis for further discussion and exploration with the client. Practical implications: the approach provides a practical guide for career development professionals to increase their capability to support their clients in response to technological advancement and the contemporary world of work. A training document incorporating a worked example of the approach is provided in “Supplementary Material Appendix 1”. Originality/value– Our approach acknowledges AI as a newactor and career development professionals as undervalued actors in supporting individuals to foster a sustainable career ecosystem
Ordinary working men...transformed into giants on the rugby field': Individual and Collective Memory in Oral Histories of Rugby League.
As a sport that partly owes its existence to the issue of ‘broken time’, the working life of professional players outside the game is a highly symbolic issue in rugby league. In England financial reality meant that until the 1990s most players at professional level had to combine their career with full time employment away from the sport, often in the communities they represented on the field. To many this helped create a strong communal bond between those who played and watched rugby league and this perception has become a key cultural narrative in the sport’s ‘collective’ memory. This article uses individual narratives from oral history interviews which relate to the working life of professional players outside rugby league to examine the contention advanced by the sociologist Maurice Halbwachs and others that recollections of personal experience are always shaped to fit within the accepted public discourse. A wide range of personal testimonies are considered in order to illustrate how far, as some oral historians have argued, individuals are able to reflect upon the significance of shared experiences in ways which offer alternative perspectives to dominant cultural scripts
Hokum!
Hokum!, the first book to take a comprehensive view of short-subject slapstick comedy in the early sound era, challenges the received wisdom that sound destroyed the slapstick tradition. Author Rob King explores the slapstick short’s Depression-era development against a backdrop of changes in film industry practice, comedic tastes, and moviegoing culture. Each chapter is grounded in case studies of comedians and comic teams, including the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, and Robert Benchley. The book also examines how the past legacy of silent-era slapstick was subsequently reimagined as part of a nostalgic mythology of Hollywood’s youth. “A valuable contribution to historiography in its ability to fill a hole in contemporary film history, increasing our understanding of both the (perceived) narrowed place of the comedy film short in the 1930s and the production and reception of slapstick comedy during that era.” -KATHRYN FULLER-SEELEY, Professor of Radio-Television-Film, University of Texas at Austin “With solid research, jewel-like prose, and plenty of wry humor, Rob King convincingly busts the myths and chases away the nostalgia for silent film comedy. Instead, we leave with a lasting sense of the form’s persistent cultural relevance.” -DONALD CRAFTON, author of Shadow of a Mouse “Hokum! moves deftly through questions of performance, aesthetics, technology, political economy, trade practices, and popular reception to convincingly unseat deeply entrenched understandings of the transition to sound and its impact on the history of screen comedy. This book is some of the smartest film history being written today.” -MARK LYNN ANDERSON, author of Twilight of the Idols ROB KING is Associate Professor at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and author of the award-winning The Fun Factory: The Keystone Film Company and the Emergence of Mass Culture
Rob and Bert in Tokyo
This essay is steeped in contradiction: it is as much an attempt at mourning, coping, and letting go as it is an exercise in remembrance, rediscovery, and reconnection. One of the many areas of international legal scholarship where Rob Cryer left his mark is his oeuvre on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE). To pay tribute to, and get re-acquainted with, Rob-the-person, I re-read his 2010 article on the ‘dignified dissenter’ in Tokyo, Dutch Judge Bert Röling. In that article, Rob uses the memoranda and the opinion of Bert-the-judge to assess his conceptual and legal contributions to the IMTFE judgment. They also serve him as a vehicle to get a better grasp of the author behind the text and the values and dilemmas that shaped Röling’s positions on the IMTFE bench. What more can we learn and understand about Rob Cryer while ‘reading Rob reading Bert’? What aspects of Röling’s legacy did he choose to foreground, and what qualities did he appreciate most? How did Rob treat his character when shedding light on the more contentious elements of Röling’s work? Even if this essay fails in its therapeutic purpose, it might still add a few mosaic pieces to the collective construction of Rob’s portrait in this volume
Emergent associative memory as a local organising principle for global adaptation in adaptive networks
Complex adaptive systems composed of self-interested agents can in some circumstances self-organise into structures that enhance global adaptation or efficiency. However, the general conditions for such an outcome are poorly understood. In contrast, sufficient conditions for artificial neural networks to form structures that perform collective computational processes such as associative memory/recall, generalisation and optimisation, are well-understood. While such global functions within a single agent or organism may arise from mechanisms (e.g., Hebbian learning) that were selected for this purpose, agents in a multi-agent system have no obvious reason to produce such global behaviours when acting from individual interest. However, Hebbian learning is actually a very simple and fully-distributed habituation or positive feedback principle. Here we use an adaptive network model in which agents can modify their behaviours (states) but also their interactions with other agents (network topology). We show that when self-interested agents can modify how they are affected by other agents then, in adapting these inter- agent relationships to maximise their own utility, they will necessarily alter them in a manner homologous with Hebbian learning. When the agents adapt their behaviours relatively quickly, and their relationships with other agents relatively slowly, we find that the overall network dynamics are modified to find better adapted states more reliably. This separation in timescales causes the state dynamics to spend most of their time at attractors. Thus, the network develops an associative memory that amplifies a subset of its own attractor states. This self-organised modification to the network dynamics enhances its ability to resolve conflicts between agents. Moreover, we show that the system is not merely ‘recalling’ high quality states that have been previously visited, but ‘predicting’ their location by generalising over local attractor states that have already been visited. Thus, globally adaptive behaviours can emerge from self-organising adaptive networks that follow organisational principles familiar in connectionist models of organismic learning

THE PORTRAYAL OF ISLAM IN DONALD TRUMP CARTOON BY ROB ROGERS
Amerika.
The number of terror spread by Islamic radicals makes Americans fearful
of the existence of Islam in America. Donald Trump uses this issue as his
advantage by promising to make America safe from Islamic terrors in his
campaign. This has been widely published through political cartoons. Based on
the background, this study aims to find out how Islam is portrayed in political
cartoons; focuses on four political cartoons belonging to Rob Rogers ranging from
December 11, 2015 to January 31, 2017. This study uses a descriptive analytical
interpretative method. Social Semiotics theory of Gunther Kress and Theo van
Leeuwen is applied to analyze the visual text. Systemic Functional Linguistic by
Halliday is also used to analyze the description of the written text. The result of
the study shows that Islam is portrayed as a Trump’s commodity to trigger his
popularity in the 2017 presidential election. The cartoons portrays Islam as a
powerless object compared to Trump as he is more powerful than Islamic figure.
The domination of action process in the visual text and material process in the
written text become the reflection of Islam as an object of Trump’s preventive
actions to anticipate Islamic terrors in America
