SELF ESTEEM ANXIETY, and GENDER in ORAL COMMUNICATION of EFL STUDENTS
Introduction: The ability to communicate is one of the most important things that the Almighty God has given to human beings. People can express their ideas, feeling, and desires by communicating. Long time before the writing symbols were used, people had already communicated orally. Even the writing system had been found; the oral communication still takes more important role.
The ability to communicate is not only needed for daily conversation, but also in other occasions, such as in parliament building, seminars, or conferences. Researchers have shown that about 75% of our daily life is used to communicate. It is, of course, mostly used for oral communication.
The ability to communicate in English has become something important in the world since English has become an important tool of communication that is used by different people from different countries. Of the 4000 to 5000 living languages, English is by far the widely used, meaning that English takes an important role in this global era. Accordingly, English is learned in many parts of the world as reported in the United Nation Statistical Yearbook. He then states that proficiency in English becomes not only a must but also an urgent need
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Measuring students’ writing skills using Facebook group application in EFL context
This research aims to measure the effectiveness of students’ writing skill through the application of Facebook group in English
learning. It employed a quantitative method using the pre-experimental design. The subject of the research was the second-semester
students of one of the private universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia in the academic year of 2017/2018. They were selected
purposively due to the writing problems occurred in the class. The total number of the sample was 20 students, which were taken by
census sampling technique. The instrument was a writing test to obtain data on the students’ writing achievement through the Facebook
group. The data analysis found that the students’ mean score in English writing was significantly improved. The students’ mean score
in the pretest was 65.30 while their mean score in the posttest was 78.05. The t-table was also lower than the t-test, that is 2.093<6.04.
Based on the result the researchers concluded that the application of Facebook group in English learning improved students’ ability in
writing
The Attitude of Hotel Department Students towards Learning English in Relation to their Learning Strategies and Achievement in Indonesian Context
AbstractThis study aims to investigate the computerized assessment of English learners’ writing ability in the writing tests in view of the use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) for Vietnamese learners of English as a foreign language (Vietnamese EFL learners) in Vietnam. It explores the possibility of using computers to assess learners’ writing abilities to prepare language learners for the standardized tests through the analysis of data from the posttests and the theoretical interpretation of second language acquisition (SLA).
The focus of the study was on a survey of intermediate level students of English taking writing posttests at a Vietnamese university. The writing tests were collected, scored and categorized into fivepoint levels. The results of the study showed the statistical significance for the writing tests (p<0.05). The effective implementation of a scoring model was suggested to assess students’ writing performance and may provide the foundation for further research in the computerized assessment in semantic aspects to design and implement innovative technology-mediated tasks for assessing academic English proficiency
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The Effect of Strategy-Based Instruction on Students' Speaking Skills atLakidende University
Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the effect of strategies-based instruction on students' speaking skill at Lakidende University and the students* interest in learning English through strategies-based instruction. This research employed Quasi Experimental Method, with non-equivalent control group design. This research assigned experimental group and control group (30 students for each).Speaking test was used to sec the effect of strategies-based instruction on students' speaking skill and questionnaire was used to see students' interest in learning English through strategies-based instruction. The data obtained through the speaking test were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Meanwhile, the data from questionnaire were analyzed in percentage and descriptive statistics. The students' speaking skill covered three components: accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. The findings showed that there was an improvement on the students' speaking ability after the treatment. There was a significant difference between the results of post-test of experimental and control group, where the mean score of post-test of" experimental group was 70.37, which was higher than the mean score of post-test of control group was 59.63.The value of P-value or sig. (2-tailed) shows that P-value or sig. (2-tailed) is smaller than u (0.00 < 0.05).Furthcrmore. the data that were collected from questionnaire showed that the students were very high interest toward strategies-based instruction. It is showed by the mean score in scale of 89.6, which was categorized as very high interest
FACEBOOK-BASED WRITING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL IN ENGLISH CLASS: LECTURERS’ PERCEPTION
The study attempted to explore lecturers’ perceptions on the use of Facebook-based
writing material in English class at STKIP Muhammadiyah Rappang, South Sulawesi,
Indonesia. The present study was a part of research and development (R&D). There were
two writing lecturers of the English Education Department in 2016/ 2017 as the subject of
the study. The data gained from the questionnaires of the lecturers’ perception on the
implementation of Facebook-based instructional material in English writing class using
the Likert scale. The scoring system was done positive and negative statement score. The
data have been analysed descriptively by using the frequency and percentage. It aimed to
measure the lecturers’ opinion. To interpret the lecturers’ responds, the researchers used
the interval estimation. The interval estimation was applied to measure the parameter of
population based on the score of interval rates which ranged to 4 categories level. The
results found that the lecturers agree that the content of learning English writing by using
Facebook-based instructional materials are suitable for the students’ level, their need for
learning and their daily lives. The average score of lecturers’ perceptions is 3.4 which
indicates that from the four components of the product (content, language, presentation
and graphic) overall shows suitability to the writing English material and to the students.
It means that the implementation of Facebook-based instruction in teaching writing is
interesting for the lecturers. It was proved by the results of the lecturers’ perception.
