L’archeometallurgia preistorica nel Mediterraneo centrale. Bilanci e programmi agli inizi del XXI secolo
The aim of the article is to foster an interdisciplinary debate regarding the direction that studies of early metallurgy in the central Mediterranean region (from the late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age, c4500-1650 BC) should be taking in the next decade. It is argued in particular that early metallurgical research has followed an idiosyncratic course due to the sway held on the discipline by Idealism, an influential philosophical movement that greatly hindered the development of science-based archaeology for most of the 20th century. The last fifteen years, however, have witnessed an unprecedented if rather tumultuous expansion of metallurgical research, and important advances have been made in the chronology and chaîne opératoire of early metal technology and artefacts. Yet it is the authors’ contention that, in order to reap full benefits from the recent disciplinary growth, an explicit research agenda must be set. This is to be grounded in the cross-disciplinary examination of metals based on archaeological as well as scientific methods of analysis
Lifetime identities and burial pathways in Copper Age Italy
The paper explores the nexus between lifetime identities and burial pathways in Copper Age Italy based on a re-examination of 4th and 3rd millennium BC cemeteries from northern and central Italy. It has long been noted that, in the 4th millennium BC, formalised burial customs emerge throughout Italy, in which a broader section of the community is given access the grave than in the Neolithic period. It has also been noted that the funerary identities laid out in the grave focus on neatly defined lifetime gender and age identities, and in some cases, to new emerging socially distinct figures. However, little has been said regarding the nexus between social biographies, death circumstances, and the burial pathways available to the deceased. Three elements of this complex nexus will be brought to the fore in the paper: (1) the relationship between the living community and the community of the dead; (2) warrior identities and the ‘biographies of violence’ that may have defined their lives and deaths; and (3) the relationship between gender and age identities, burial treatment (e.g., articulation, disarticulation, and grave furnishings), and warrior burials, including occasional inversions of the accepted social norms. By exploring these life and death pathways, the paper aims to generate new insights into Copper Age Italian communities at the nexus between individual biographies and broader social identities
Interdisciplinary Approaches to Prehistoric Warfare and Violence: Past, Present, and Future
Cortico‐cortical paired associative stimulation conditioning superficial ventral premotor cortex–primary motor cortex connectivity influences motor cortical activity during precision grip
The ventral premotor cortex (PMv) and primary motor cortex (M1) represent critical nodes of a parietofrontal network involved in grasping actions, such as power and precision grip. Here, we investigated how the functional PMv-M1 connectivity drives the dissociation between these two actions. We applied a PMv-M1 cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (cc-PAS) protocol, stimulating M1 in both postero-anterior (PA) and antero-posterior (AP) directions, in order to induce long-term changes in the activity of different neuronal populations within M1. We evaluated the motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitude, MEP latency and cortical silent period, in both PA and AP, during the isometric execution of precision and power grip, before and after the PMv-M1 cc-PAS. The repeated activation of the PMv-M1 cortico-cortical network with PA orientation over M1 did not change MEP amplitude or cortical silent period duration during both actions. In contrast, the PMv-M1 cc-PAS stimulation of M1 with an AP direction led to a specific modulation of precision grip motor drive. In particular, MEPs tested with AP stimulation showed a selective increase of corticospinal excitability during precision grip. These findings suggest that the more superficial M1 neuronal populations recruited by the PMv input are involved preferentially in the execution of precision grip action

The Newcastle-led Bronze Age Combat project presents its results from innovative combat experiments with replica Bronze Age swords, spears and shields. The original experimental methodologies used authentic replica weapons in extensive rigorous field experiments, and actualistic combat based on historical manuscripts. These allowed for replicate combat-related wear marks as found on original Bronze Age specimens. \i Bronze Age Combat\i0 provides a full account of the methodologies, replicas, experiments and results in unprecedented detail. By bringing together a range of experimental techniques, materials and expertise, this book is designed as a starting point and reference collection for further studies into Bronze Age combat research, metalwork wear analysis and experimental archaeology

I pugnali litici da Torre della Chiesaccia e Casetta Mistici (Roma). Analisi preliminare delle tracce d’uso
A Torre della Chiesaccia sono stati rinvenuti nella tomba 15 (n. 2 pugnali), tomba 7 (n. 1) e tomba 14 (n. 1).
Da Casetta Mistici provengono due pugnali, uno proveniente dalla tomba 6 e uno dalla tomba 8.
La materia prima utilizzata per la produzione dei pugnali è principalmente la selce, con la sola eccezione del pugnale proveniente dalla tomba 8 di Casetta Mistici, in diaspro/radiolarite. La morfologia e le dimensioni dei pugnali di Torre della Chiesaccia sono piuttosto varie. Sono presenti pugnali bifacciali e pugnali monofacciali lunghi tra i 18 e i 20 cm. Questi ultimi mostrano dei ritocchi anche sulla faccia ventrale, ma localizzati esclusivamente sulla punta e sul codolo (tomba 15). Sempre a Torre della Chiesaccia sono presenti pugnali litici monofacciali lunghi 15 cm (tombe 7 e 14), di cui uno frammentato ritualmente in due parti in antico. In ultimo, da Casetta Mistici provengono due piccoli pugnali bifacciali lunghi circa 11 cm (Tab. 4.6. 1). I manufatti non presentano importanti alterazioni, ma esclusivamente delle leggere glossy che non
inficiano tuttavia la diagnostica delle tracce d’uso. Solo in pochi casi, parti dell’oggetto sono coperte da una concrezione calcitica con aspetto globulare. I dati qui presentati sono del tutto preliminari e richiederanno ulteriori approfondimenti attraverso un’intensa attività sperimentale, attualmente in corso.
