Planning for Transport in the Wake of Stern and Eddington

The recent Stern and Eddington Reports for the UK Treasury emphasize the significance of the linkages between transport, land use, the environment, and the economy. Against that background, the purpose of this paper is to consider the future of transport planning in England given the liberalizing thrust of the Barker Review on land-use planning and the subsequent White Paper Planning for a Sustainable Future (2007). In reviewing the demographic and economic assumptions of the White Paper, it is concluded that in certain respects there are important mismatches between the emerging government policy on strategic planning and the Stern and Eddington Reports. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll mit diesem Beitrag die Zukunft der Verkehrsplanung in England untersucht werden, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Liberalisierungsbemuhungen im Barker-Gutachten zur Planung der Landnutzung sowie in der anschliessendem Weissbuchplanung fur nachhaltige Zukunft (2007). Nach einer Uberprufung der demografischen und wirtschaftlichen Annahmen des Weissbuchs ziehen wir den Schluss, dass die entstehende Regierungspolitik zur strategischen Planung hinsichtlich bestimmter Aspekte erheblich von Sterns und Eddingtons Berichten abweicht. Con estos datos, en este articulo analizamos el futuro de la planificacion del transporte en Inglaterra, teniendo en cuenta el empuje liberal del Informe Barker sobre la planificacion del uso del suelo y la posterior Planificacion del Libro Blanco para un Futuro Sostenible (2007). Geographic profiling in Nazi Berlin: fact and fiction
No full textGeographic profiling uses the locations of connected crime sites to make inferences about the probable location of the offender’s ‘anchor point’ (usually a home, but sometimes a workplace). We show how the basic ideas of the method were used in a Gestapo investigation that formed the basis of a classic German novel about domestic resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War. We use modern techniques to re-analyse this case, and show that these successfully locate the Berlin home address of Otto and Elise Hampel, who had distributed hundreds of anti-Nazi postcards, after analysing just 34 of the 214 incidents that took place before their arrest. Our study provides the first empirical evidence to support the suggestion that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts such as graffiti and theft could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur

No full textCette communication s’intéresse aux projets photographiques dans lesquels une photographie historique est placée dans son paysage environnant avant d’être re-photographiée. Le livre « Atlas » d’Edmund Kuppel (1991), la série « Reframing History » de Susan Meiselas (2004) et le projet « Third View » (1997-2000) de Mark Klett ont tous en commun de poursuivre une démarche selon laquelle le procédé de re-photographier une photographie ancienne permet d’explorer les histoires autour des images et des lieux. Autrement dit, il s’agit d’une double « excavation » du temps dans la mesure où la photographie ancienne révèle les traces du passé autant du paysage représenté que du médium utilisé. La comparaison directe avec l’état présent permet, de surcroît, de retracer l’évolution du site tout en posant des questions quant aux implications culturelles, écologiques et politiques. Plus récemment, ces allers-retours entre le passé et le présent sont employés au moyen de procédés numériques tels que Time-lapse mining ou Google Street View Timeline. Basés sur l’accumulation et l’animation d’un grand nombre de photographies prises dans des périodes différentes, ces procédés permettent au spectateur de naviguer à travers le temps et l’espace des paysages photographiques actuels et passés. Les collages de Halley Docherty, qui superposent des photographies et des peintures historiques à des captures d’écran de Google Street View, s’inscrivent dans la lignée des projets précédents et témoignent du fait que la fascination pour ce genre d’images intégrées est loin d’être arrivée à un terme

No full textThe present study attempts to continue the work of Paul Foulkes and Gerry Docherty, aiming to collapse several research fields into a single, eclectic discipline labelled Accent Studies. Through a case study (NW Yorkshire), it also proposes a transposable and interactive approach to accent variation and change which simultaneously takes into account the multiple dimensions of an imperfectly understood phenomenon. This thesis focuses on suprasegmental elements, which are often neglected in traditional descriptions of English varieties worldwide and little taken into account in EFL teaching. Through the study of accent variation and change as observed in NW Yorkshire, this PhD thesis aims to highlight the complexity of factors accounting for the evolution of British accents.La présente étude constitue une tentative de poursuivre les travaux de Paul Foulkes et Gerry Docherty, visant à coordonner plusieurs champs de recherche dans le cadre d’une discipline unique, éclectique, à laquelle ils conférent le nom d’Accent Studies. Elle propose également, à travers une étude de cas, un modèle transposable et interactif d’étude qui prend simultanément en compte diverses dimensions de la variation et du changement accentuels. Cette thèse inclut au nombre des composantes des accents leurs spécificités suprasegmentales, souvent négligées dans les descriptions traditionnelles et peu prises en compte dans l’enseignement de l’anglais en tant que langue étrangère. No full textThe aim of this thesis is to determine how women are treated in selectedworks of Henry de Montherlant. This is explored by examining their relationshipswith other women as well as with men. Inevitably, this leads to an analysis ofthe multifaceted area of love. Part I researches Montherlant's prose work and included in this section is the investigation of the importance of 'l'ordre male' to the author and the influence this exerts over his early prose work in the areas of tauromachy, war and sport, and where the male adherence to this concept leaves women. The 'syncretisme et alternance' which is central to Montherlant's thinking is explored in this section.Part 2 is concerned with Montherlant's theatre in which the psychological development of the main characters is of great importance. It is in this section that a comparative study is made of the influence of Mme. Elisabeth Zehrfuss' written contribution to La Reine morte. Her unpublished notes are set out in full in the Appendix. The thesis also draws on the unpublished correspondence between Henry de Montherlant and Elisabeth Zehrfuss between the years 1934 and 1945. An investigation is made as to whether or not there are any differences between the way women are treated in Montherlant's prose and in his theatre and the conclusion is drawn that there are
An economic analysis of the production of hydrogen from wind-generated electricity for use in transport applications
No full textWind-generated electricity is often considered a particularly promising option for producing hydrogen from renewable energy sources. However, the economic performances of such systems generally remain unclear because of unspecified or favorable assumptions and operating conditions. The aim of this paper is to clarify these conditions by examining how the hydrogen produced is used. The analysis that has been conducted in the framework of the HyFrance 3 project concerns hydrogen for transport applications. Different technical systems are considered such as motorway hydrogen filling stations, Hythane®-fueled buses or second-generation biofuels production, which present contrasted hydrogen use characteristics. This analysis reveals considerable variations in hydrogen production costs depending on the demand profiles concerned, with the most favorable configurations being those in which storage systems are kept to a minimum.wind power ; hydrogen production
