    Author discusses his time as an engineering student and football player (1955-59), and then football coach, track coach, athletic director, instructor and then assistant professor of civil engineering at Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) (1962-64). As a football player in 1958, he led the nation in scoring with 168 points in 8 games. Sixty-two years later, the 168 points continues to be the record for points in a season by an Indiana college football player. His 21.0 points per game were the national record for thirty years (1958-88) until broken by Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State. In 1957 and 1958, the Rose Poly football team won fifteen games in a row over two seasons while the defense held opponents to 5.4 points per game. In 1958, the team led the NCAA Division II in defense holding opponents to 95.8 yards per game and a total of 31 points (3.9 points per game). As the football coach, he rescued the team from a disastrous previous year in which the team lost all of its games and scored only six points.     Did Plant Patents Create the American Rose?

    The Plant Patent Act of 1930 was the first step towards creating property rights for biological innovation: it introduced patent rights for asexually-propagated plants. This paper uses data on plant patents and registrations of new varieties to examine whether the Act encouraged innovation. Nearly half of all plant patents between 1931 and 1970 were for roses. Large commercial nurseries, which began to build mass hybridization programs in the 1940s, accounted for most of these patents, suggesting that the new intellectual property rights may have helped to encourage the development of a commercial rose breeding industry. Data on registrations of newly-created roses, however, yield no evidence of an increase in innovation: less than 20 percent of new roses were patented, European breeders continued to create most new roses, and there was no increase in the number of new varieties per year after 1931.

    Construção do latus rectum utilizando o geogebra

    This study aims to investigate the latus rectum of conic sections, ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola, by addressing its definition, properties, and geometric constructions. Although it is a significant element for understanding conic curves, the latus rectum is rarely discussed in conventional textbooks, both at the high school and undergraduate levels. To address this gap, a qualitative and exploratory research was conducted, based on historical and bibliographic sources, with emphasis on the work of Apollonius of Perga and modern analytical geometry manuals. In addition to the theoretical foundation, this study proposes the graphical construction of the latus rectum using the GeoGebra software, aiming to enhance visualization and facilitate the teaching and learning process. The use of this technological tool seeks to make mathematical concepts more accessible, dynamic, and interactive, thus bridging theory and educational practice.Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal estudar o latus rectum das seções cônicas, elipse, parábola e hipérbole, abordando sua definição, propriedades e construções geométricas. Embora seja um elemento significativo para a compreensão das cônicas, o latus rectum é raramente tratado em materiais didáticos convencionais, tanto no Ensino Médio quanto no Ensino Superior. Para suprir essa lacuna, realiza-se uma pesquisa qualitativa de caráter exploratório, fundamentada em fontes históricas e bibliográficas, com destaque para a obra de Apolônio de Perga e os manuais de geometria analítica contemporânea. Além da base teórica, o trabalho propõe a construção gráfica do latus rectum por meio do software GeoGebra, com o intuito de favorecer a visualização e facilitar o processo de ensino-aprendizagem. A utilização dessa ferramenta tecnológica visa tornar os conceitos mais acessíveis, dinâmicos e interativos, aproximando a teoria matemática da prática educacional

    A dignidade do adolescente autor de ato infracional: o poder judiciário como instrumento de efetivação

    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Jurídicas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Direito, Florianópolis, 2009.Esta dissertação de mestrado tem como objeto o estudo da dignidade do adolescente autor de ato infracional e o Poder Judiciário como instrumento de efetivação. A opção pela análise e correlação dos temas Poder Judiciário, princípio da dignidade da pessoa humana e adolescente autor de ato infracional deve-se, primeiramente, ao fato de estarem intimamente ligados frente a uma efetiva concretização do Estado Democrático de Direito disposto na Constituição da República Federativa do Brasil de 1988. E, em segundo lugar, por tais temas serem comumente representados mais pelas omissões, ou pelo senso comum, do que por debates e estudos que realmente contribuam, daí a preocupação de romper com uma herança jurídica tradicional. Para se chegar às conclusões, partiu-se da análise do histórico e considerações conceituais da dignidade da pessoa humana, bem como o estudo de sua trajetória nas Cartas Constitucionais brasileiras até a Constituição vigente. Em seguida, examinou-se o escorço histórico e os conceitos das medidas sócio-educativas e do ato infracional no Direito brasileiro para então, ao término do trabalho, se verificar o papel do Poder Judiciário como instrumento de efetivação do princípio da dignidade da pessoa humana em relação ao adolescente autor de ato infracional, dando-se ênfase à realidade do Estado de Santa Catarina.This master dissertation aims to study the teenager in conflict with law dignity and the Judiciary as an warranter. The choice of analysing and relating the Judiciary, Human Dignity legal principle and adolescent author of breaking laws derives, first, from the fact of being closely linked to each other in view of an effective accomplishment of the Constitutional Democratic State established in the Federal Constitution of 1988. In second place, because these subjects are more usually represented for omissions or for common sense than for debates and studies that really contribute, reason of the concern for breaching a traditional judicial heritage. To reach the conclusions, we started by analysing the historic outline and considerations about the concept of Human Dignity and, as well, studying its path through brazilian Constitutions until the current one. After, the historic outline and concepts of socio-educational measures were analysed, besides the offensive acts in brazilian law. Bringing the job to completion, we verified the role played by the Judiciary as an instrument to achieve the Human Dignity legal principle, towards the teenager in conflict with law, giving emphasis on the reality in Santa Catarina
