    Collapse Of Conical Shells Having Single Dimple Imperfection Under Axial Compression

    This paper aims to provide experimental results into the buckling behavior of cones having single dimple imperfection subjected to axial compression. Results of eight laboratory scaled conical test models and their accompanying numerical data are presented. Cones were manufactured in pairs with single dimple imperfection amplitude, A, of 0.0, 0.56,1.12, and 1.68. Experimental results reveal good repeatability of collapse load. The errors between each pair were found to be 3%, 7%, 11%, and 1%. Furthermore, the comparison between test data and the numerically predicted collapse load was seen to be good. The ratio of collapse test load to finite element predicted values are [(0.96, 0.99), (1.04, 1.10), (1.06, 0.94), (1.0, 1.01)]. The buckling of axially compressed conical shells using the single dimple imperfection type appears to be strongly influenced by: (i) the dimple/imperfection amplitude, (ii) the cone geometric parameter, i.e., radius-to-thickness ratio and cone angle, and (iii) the location of the dimpl

    abstract: While golf has been around for centuries, the technology associated with the game has evolved significantly in an attempt to improve golfers’ scores. Specifically, researchers at Arizona State University (ASU) have looked at the dimple patterns on golf balls. They found that various dimple shapes, sizes, and patterns can have a serious impact on the flight of the ball, thus drastically improving the golfer’s game. This patented technology is the basis of the founding of Dimple Tech, a golf ball technology startup. Dimple Tech was founded by three ASU students in an effort to license the patent to the major golf ball manufacturers (Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, etc.). The ultimate goal of this startup was to build traction in any way possible, so the team made a video pitch that was sent to the aforementioned manufacturers. Although no traction came out of it, the project was a success as a market for this product was established and the company has a competitive advantage over other golf companies

    A Study of Dimple Characteristics on Golf Ball Drag

    AbstractDimples on the golf ball have significant effect on its aerodynamic properties as well as the flight trajectory. The aerodynamic of golf ball is still not fully understood in spite of a significant number of published data in the open literature. Most studies were conducted using the wind tunnel testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. This paper examines the aerodynamic effect of dimple depth on golf balls. 3D printing technology was used to manufacture 11 balls with varied dimple depth. RMIT Aero Wind Tunnel was used to measure the drag forces over a range of wind speeds. It was found that the drag coefficient of golf ball varied significantly due to varied dimple geometry. The results indicate that the increase of the dimple depth ratio or surface roughness of the golf ball can shift the transition to a lower Reynolds number and increase the drag coefficient in transcritical regime. The results also established a positive linear correlation between relative roughness and drag coefficient

    Heat transfer analysis on dimple geometries and arrangements in dimple jacketed heat exchanger

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of dimple geometries and arrangements on the heat transfer enhancement in a dimple jacketed heat exchanger. Design/methodology/approach: For the purpose of this paper, with the experimental validated numerical model, this paper carries out numerical simulations of both single dimples with different geometries and the whole dimple jacketed heat exchanger with different dimple arrangements. For a single dimple, its secondary vortex flow, temperature differences and the pressure drop performance for different geometries are analyzed. For the whole dimple jacketed heat exchanger, the heat transfer and pressure drop performances are investigated by comparing the no dimple, triangular and rectangular dimple arrangements. Findings: Results show that dimples can improve the heat transfer efficiency compared with conventional jacketed heat exchanger, and specific geometries and arrangement of dimples for better heat transfer performance are figured out. Originality/value: This paper considers both dimple geometries and arrangements, which can be useful for further applications in specific integrated devices or similar applications
