On Quantum Things. A Constructive Guide to the Fundamentals of Quantum Theory

    No full text
A realist, particle-based view of quantum theory-where the wavefunction no longer plays a central role-offers a clear, commonsense alternative to dominant metaphysical views. This book explores the metaphysics of quantum theory through a lens of scientific realism-the belief that successful scientific theories describe reality. It critically evaluates various interpretations, including structural realism, wave function realism, and the many-worlds view, highlighting their limitations. Valia Allori proposes a “spatiotemporal foundational ontology” approach, grounded in particles as fundamental entities evolving in three-dimensional space and time, following uniform, symmetric laws. This view is exemplified by Bohmian mechanics (pilot-wave theory), offering a constructive, commonsensical explanation of quantum phenomena. The wave function, in this framework, is not a physical object but plays a functional, law-like role in explaining interactions. Further, the book advances a radical thesis: fundamental particles lack intrinsic properties like mass or charge and are instead “bare” objects distinguished only by the laws governing them. This thesis allows a middle path between traditional object-based metaphysics and eliminative structuralism. Ultimately, the author argues that had physics developed more rationally, instead of following a historical path shaped by contingent choices, the pilot-wave theory might have been the dominant interpretation, minimizing the proliferation of speculative alternatives

Fundamental Physical Theories: Mathematical Structures Grounded on a Primitive Ontology

    No full text
In my dissertation I analyze the structure of fundamental physical theories. I start with an analysis of what an adequate primitive ontology is, discussing the measurement problem in quantum mechanics and theirs solutions. It is commonly said that these theories have little in common. I argue instead that the moral of the measurement problem is that the wave function cannot represent physical objects and a common structure between these solutions can be recognized: each of them is about a clear three-dimensional primitive ontology that evolves according to a law determined by the wave function. The primitive ontology is what matter is made of while the wave function tells the matter how to move. One might think that what is important in the notion of primitive ontology is their three-dimensionality. If so, in a theory like classical electrodynamics electromagnetic fields would be part of the primitive ontology. I argue that, reflecting on what the purpose of a fundamental physical theory is, namely to explain the behavior of objects in three–dimensional space, one can recognize that a fundamental physical theory has a particular architecture. If so, electromagnetic fields play a different role in the theory than the particles and therefore should be considered

The present article seeks to revisit a fundamental concept for the analysis of the ideas in the capitalist system: ideology. To do so, this concept is revisited in a classic author on this subject: Karl Marx. Based on the investigation of excerpts of his book “German Ideology”, the article aims to recover what the German thinker understands by ideology. After, an analysis of the book “The ideological  surplus value” written by the Venezuelan philosopher Ludovico Silva. Silva takes up the concept of ideology as it appears in Marx and then tries to expand it, discovering a new category: ideological surplus value. In the end, the converging elements between Marx and Silva are highlighted and the possibilities and limits of the ideological surplus value category are pointed out. Isogeometric solution of helmholtz equation with dirichlet boundary condition in regions with irregular boundary: Numerical experiences

In this paper we use the Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) to solve the Helmholtz equation with Dirichlet boundary condition over a bounded physical 2D domain. Starting from the variational formulation of the problem, we show how to apply IgA to obtain an approximated solution based on biquadratic B-spline functions. We focus the attention on problems where the physical domain has very irregular boundary. To solve these problems successfully a high quality parametrization of the domain must be constructed. This parametrization is also a biquadratic tensor product B-spline function, with control points computed as the vertices of a quadrilateral mesh with optimal geometric properties. We study experimentally the influence of the wave number and the parametrization of the physical domain in the accuracy of the approximated solution. A comparison with classical Finite Element Method is also included. The power of IgA is shown solving several difficult model problems, which are particular cases of the Helmholtz equation and where the solution has discontinuous gradient in some points, or it is highly oscillatory. For all model problems we explain how to select the knots of B-spline quadratic functions and how to insert knew knots in order to obtain good approximations. The results obtained with our imple-mentation of the method prove that IgA approach is successful, even on regions with irregular boundary, since it is able to offer smooth solutions having at the same time some singular points and high number of oscillations.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Mathematical Physic

AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of the process of evaluating the knowledge and skills acquired through the eyes of students enrolled in the Midwife program.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was conducted among students in the Medical University of Varna, enrolled in the Midwife program, from 1st to 4th year (98 individuals). The survey is detailed and it was conducted in July, 2016. The methods used were documentary, statistical, survey, and graphical analysis.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Students accept the evaluation with reservations and as a reflection of the gained throughout the studies knowledge and skills, while considering that the evaluation itself cannot be motivating for making more effort when acquiring more knowledge. They appreciate the need for systemic absorption of knowledge and application of current control in training in the Midwife program. According to them, the process of examination and evaluation does not completely eliminate the influence of random factors. It is mandatory to apply various forms, methods and tests, which can clarify the process in relation to the specifics in the practical tuition and the real life environment specifics. Students perceive the silence while someone else is cheating on an exam as an appropriate behavior.CONCLUSIONS: The exam tests both the acquired knowledge and skills, and the individual qualities and character, which affect the way they present the tested/examined knowledge

Nonconvulsive epileptic seizure monitoring with incremental learning

    Get PDF
Nonconvulsive epileptic seizures (NCSz) and nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) are two neurological entities associated with increment in morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. In a previous work, we introduced a method which accurately detected NCSz in EEG data (referred here as ‘Batch method’). However, this approach was less effective when the EEG features identified at the beginning of the recording changed over time. Such pattern drift is an issue that causes failures of automated seizure detection methods. This paper presents a support vector machine (SVM)-based incremental learning method for NCSz detection that for the first time addresses the seizure evolution in EEG records from patients with epileptic disorders and from ICU having NCSz. To implement the incremental learning SVM, three methodologies are tested. These approaches differ in the way they reduce the set of potentially available support vectors that are used to build the decision function of the classifier. To evaluate the suitability of the three incremental learning approaches proposed here for NCSz detection, first, a comparative study between the three methods is performed. Secondly, the incremental learning approach with the best performance is compared with the Batch method and three other batch methods from the literature. From this comparison, the incremental learning method based on maximum relevance minimum redundancy (MRMR_IL) obtained the best results. MRMR_IL method proved to be an effective tool for NCSz detection in a real-time setting, achieving sensitivity and accuracy values above 99%
