Sensitivity of Greek Organisations in Sustainability Issues

No full text
Recently, the world has been faced with a variety of environmental, social, and economic problems. The effects of climate change and the lack of resources are constantly intensifying, while at the same time the impact of industrial production has become an international issue. Undoubtedly, this global paradigm and these relevant social and economic challenges require joint efforts at an international level. During the past few decades, a number of companies in Greece have undertaken initiatives towards sustainable development (SD) by adopting “green” practices. This work presents the findings of a survey that has been conducted in 2020, which investigates the extent of business contribution to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Research was based on the analysis of sustainability reporting published by Greek companies. The key findings of the survey show that issues related to environmental protection, societal well-being, and citizens’ quality of life have attracted an increasing level of awareness in the Greek industry sectors. Issues such as climate change, as well as sustainable production and consumption, are becoming topics within companies’ day-to-day agenda

Variable packet size buffered crossbar (cicq) switches

Abstract — One of the most widely used architectures for packet switches is the crossbar. A special version of it is the buffered crossbar, where small buffers are associated with the crosspoints; this simplifies scheduling and improves its efficiency and QoS capabilities to the point where the switch needs no internal speedup. Furthermore, by supporting variable length packets throughout a buffered crossbar: (a) there is no need for segmentation and reassembly (SAR) circuits; (b) no speedup is necessary to support SAR; and (c) synchronization between the input and output clock domains is simplified. In turn, the lack of SAR and speedup mean that no output queues are needed, either. In this paper we present an architecture, a chip layout and cost analysis, and a performance evaluation of such a 300 Gbps buffered crossbar operating on variable-size packets. The proposed organization is simple yet powerful, can be implemented using modern technology, and, as the performance results demonstrate, it clearly outperforms unbuffered crossbars.

VineTalk: Simplifying Software Access and Sharing of FPGAs in Datacenters

No full text
FPGA-based accelerators are becoming a first class citizen in data centers. Adding FPGAs in data centers can lead to higher compute densities with improved energy efficiency for latency critical workloads, such as financial applications. However deployment of FPGAs in datacenters is hindered, as both developers and cloud providers face difficulties. Application writers need to deal with FPGA interfacing as well as application logic/algorithms. On the other hand, cloud providers are reluctant to deploy FPGAs in large scale, due to the FPGAs lack of sharing that results in reduced utilization and questionable ROI. In this paper, we introduce VineTalk, a framework that reduces the programming effort associated with FPGA-based accelerators and FPGA virtualization. We integrate VineTalk with the Xilinx SDAccel development framework and we map it to the Kintex UltraScale FPGA. Our preliminary evaluation with a use-case of financial applications shows that VineTalk can offer effective FPGA sharing introducing less than 4% overhead to application execution time

Variable packet size buffered crossbar (CICQ) switches

Summarization: One of the most widely used architectures for packet switches is the crossbar. A special version of a it is the buffered crossbar, where small buffers are associated with the crosspoints. The advantages of this organization, when compared to the unbuffered architecture, is that it needs much simpler and slower scheduling circuits, while it can shape the switched traffic according to a given set of Quality of Service (QoS) criteria in a more efficient way. Furthermore, by supporting variable length packets throughout a buffered crossbar: a) there is no need for segmentation and reassembly circuits, b) no internal speedup is necessary, and c) synchronization between the input and output clock domains is simplified. In this paper we present an architecture, a hardware implementation analysis, and a performance evaluation of such a buffered crossbar. The proposed organization is simple, yet powerful and can be easily implemented using today’s technologies. Our evaluation shows that it outperforms most of the existing packet switch architectures, while its hardware cost is kept to a minimum.Παρουσιάστηκε στο: IEEE International Conference on Communication

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among HIV Positive Patients under Surveillance in Greek Infectious Disease Units: A Screening Study with Comparative Evaluation of Serological Methods

No full text
This study aims to screen for IgG antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) in the sera of 155 newly diagnosed Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive patients under surveillance in Greek Infectious Disease Units. Additionally, risk factors based on patient demographics were examined, and a comparative evaluation of commercially available serological methods was conducted. Three methods were employed to detect IgG antibodies against T. gondii: Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Immunofluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT), and Western Blot (WB), which was used as a reference here. Forty-nine sera samples were true-positive for IgG antibodies against T. gondii, resulting in a 31.61% positivity rate, and the immunoassay test statistical reliability analysis resulted in higher IFAT accuracy (90.97%) compared to ELISA (76.26%). Furthermore, statistical analysis of demographic and immunological data included in the study placed female and foreign/non-Greek individuals at 2.24 (p = 0.0009) and 2.34 (p = 0.0006) times higher risk of positive T. gondii IgG testing compared to their male and Greek counterparts, respectively. Our findings on positivity rates and comparative serology underscore the importance of early and suitable screening measures for newly diagnosed HIV+ patients to mitigate the life-threatening outcomes that may arise from a potential subsequent T. gondii activation

Specificity of understanding of the basic theological and philosophical terms in Severus of Antioch’s teaching

This article focuses on the specific understanding of basic theological and philosophical terms of Severus of Antioch’s teaching. The author analyses such concepts as: "essence" (οὐσία), "hypostasis" (ὑπόστασις), "person" (πρόσωπον), "nature" (φύσις) and "energy" (ἐνέργεια). The research on the above terms is a necessary introduction to further study of christology of the most outstanding of the representatives of "moderate monophysism". As a result of the conducted research, the differences in the Severus of Antioch and the Diphysites’ understanding of the above-mentioned concepts were revealed. Of particular note is the interpretation of the concept of "φύσις", which for the Antiochian Patriarch is synonymous with the terms "ὑπόστασις" and "πρόσωπον". It also seems specific to interpret the term "ἐνέργεια", which, according to Severus, is not an attribute of a being, but is only a manifestation of a specific hypostasis/nature/person.Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest specyfice rozumienia podstawowych terminów teologiczno-filozoficznych w nauczaniu Sewera z Antiochii. Autor analizuje w nim takie pojęcia jak: „istota” (οὐσία), „hipostaza” (ὑπόστασις), „osoba” (πρόσωπον), „natura” (φύσις) oraz „energia” (ἐνέργεια). Zbadanie powyższych terminów to niezbędny wstęp do kolejnych rozważań nad chrystologią najwybitniejszego z przedstawicieli „umiarkowanego monofizyzmu”. The HIV patient profile in 2013 and 2003: Results from the Greek AMACS cohort

No full text
Combined Antiretroviral therapy (cART) has improved life-expectancy of people living with HIV (PLHIV) but as they age, prevalence of chronic non-AIDS related comorbidities may increase. We study the evolution of HIV-disease markers and comorbidities’ prevalence in PLHIV in Greece. Two cross-sectional analyses (2003 and 2013) on data from the AMACS cohort were performed. Comparisons were based on population average models and were repeated for subjects under follow-up at both 2003 and 2013. 2,403 PLHIV were identified in 2003 and 4,910 in 2013 (1,730 contributing for both cross-sections). Individuals in 2013 were on average older, diagnosed/treated for HIV for longer, more likely to be on cART, viro-logically suppressed, and with higher CD4 counts. Chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia and hypertension prevalence increased over time. There was an increase in prescription of lipid-lowering treatment (3.5% in 2003 vs. 7.7% 2013, p<0.001). Among 220 and 879 individuals eligible for Framingham 10-year Event Risk calculation, the proportion of patients in the high-risk group (>20%) increased from 18.2% to 22.2% (p = 0.002). Increase in the prevalence of comorbidities was more pronounced in the subset of patients who were followed in both 2003 and 2013. The increased availability and uptake of cART led to significant improvements in the immuno-virological status of PLHIV in Greece, but they aged alongside an increase in prevalence of non-AIDS related comorbidities. These results highlight the need for appropriate monitoring, optimal cART selection and long-term management and prevention strategies for such comorbidities. © 2018 Pantazis et al.
