Breaking through the looking-glass: (re)imagining Alice through visual representation

    No full text
This thesis focuses on the visual iconography of the ‘Alice’ figure created in Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, and it traces the progression of Alice’s characterisation through multimodal platforms including illustration, cinematography and fine art photography. It investigates the altering dynamic of the ‘Alice’ figure through a close reading of selected and representational visual texts. Similarly, this thesis examines the growth of Alice from child subject to adult woman, something that is a significant aspect of visual (re)imagining. These multimodal representations inaugurate a new sense of identity that merges with the overall idea of Alice. This thesis considers Alice as a kind of collective and ongoing iconotext; she is an amalgam of image and narrative character that transcends her literary origins. The images allow Alice to outgrow the text and give us an Alice that is far more developed than the singular character who appears in the written form. This thesis argues that the initial conception of the ‘Alice’ figure stems from the photographic existence of Alice Liddell. Therefore, Jean Baudrillard’s notion of the simulacrum is essential to this research; this thesis traces the journey from the referent (Alice Liddell) to the end result of pure simulacrum (Alice as an idea that transcends her original state). The version of Alice Liddell that is captured in Carroll’s photographs is the beginning of a universal ‘Alice’ figure, and thus, becomes a referent for all other (re)creations. Hence, the ‘Alice’ figure maintains a polymorphic identity throughout her illustrative career. As she evolves, the identity of Carroll’s protagonist widens while the referential origin of Alice Liddell is inevitably altered (or completely lost) through pure simulacrum. Therefore, given that the referent of Alice is continuously echoed throughout the (re)imagined illustrative works, Jacques Derrida’s notion of hauntology is also relevant when analysing the ‘Alice’ figure. This haunting effect of being an omnipresent figure is interesting when analysing the impact of Carroll’s imagination on other illustrators. Effectively, she becomes an idea that echoes in the works of ‘Alice’ artists, decisively present and non-present all at once.N

3. Bidra til diskursen om LHBTQ+ inkluderende undervisning. This qualitative study aims to explore the use of LGBTQ+ themes and literature in the EFL classroom at a primary school level in a Norwegian context. The core curriculum of Identity and Cultural diversity states that the school is responsible for giving each pupil the opportunity to preserve and develop their identity in an inclusive and diverse environment (Ministry of Education and Research, 2017, p. 4). In order to promote the inclusiveness, tolerance and acknowledgement of all pupils, teachers need to include education that incorporates LGBTQ+ themes. One of the most useful ways of implementing LGBTQ+ themes in the classroom is by using queer literature. This has motivated me to conduct a research study entitled “Perspectives and Attitudes Towards Using LGBTQ+ Themes and Literature in the EFL classroom. The theoretical background I use to support my research questions draws from queer theory in education, LGBTQ inclusive teaching as well as using visual literature for teaching about LGBTQ+ topics. My methodology consists of a semi-structured interview with two teachers about their experiences in using LGBTQ+ themes. In addition, I have analyzed two contemporary queer picturebooks that can be implemented for future pedagogic use of LGBTQ+ inclusive teaching. The main purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of: 1. Investigating the use of LGBTQ+ literature and themes in primary classrooms. 2. Exploring the challenges faced when implementing LGBTQ+ texts and topics. 3. Contributing to the discourse of LGBTQ+ inclusive teaching

2. Inkluderer lærere i praksis slik litteratur i EFL-klasserommet? 3. Using literature in language learning builds on the learners’ connections, enriches their learning, and increases knowledge (Paran & Robinson, 2016, p. 15). Although it is stated that literature enriches learning in education, there has been little research on the inclusion of LGBTQ+ literature in the Norwegian EFL classroom. This thesis will investigate the use of texts in the EFL classroom that authentically represent people defining as gender queer and/or being beyond the gender binary. This thesis will perform a close critical analysis of two books, Gender Queer (a graphic novel) and Beyond the Gender Binary (a nonfiction book). I will explore these texts through visual methodologies and close readings to investigate the potential benefits of using them in the EFL classroom to promote inclusion. Additionally, the Norwegian curriculum is considerably vague, and topics such as LGBTQ+ can be marginalized in primary education. Because of this statement, I want to interview three teachers to investigate the usage of such literature in the EFL classroom and explore the reasonings for their inclusion or lack thereof. Using the teachers’ attitudes and previous practice, I will connect the interview data to the suggestive vagueness of the Norwegian curriculum. I will then connect the aforementioned literature to the curriculum in an attempt to suggest further LGBTQ+ implementation in the EFL classroom. Through researching these aspects, this study attempts to answer the following research questions: 1. How can fiction and non-fiction texts be used in the EFL classroom to represent people defining as gender queer and/or being beyond the gender binary? 2. Are in-service teachers including such literature in the EFL classroom? 3. Is the curriculum’s implied vagueness damaging for both people outside of and within the LGBTQ+ category

Representations of Racial Diversity in Contemporary Picturebooks Through an Ecocritical Lens

Same text, different format: A Qualitative Study of Children's Readerly Responses to Coraline

This qualitative study aims to investigate whether there is a difference in the child reader’s readerly response to a novella vs. a graphic novel and what these differences could imply for the EFL classroom. Further, this thesis seeks to explore how and if a child reader is experiencing a text differently based on the format of the text. The research is done in a Norwegian English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom at a primary school level. In the curriculum for the English subject, reading encompasses one of the four basic skills for English language teaching in Norwegian classrooms, in addition to, oral skills, writing-, and digital skills (The Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, 2019). For English language teaching, reading different types of texts and being exposed to various types of language input is considered to be an important and crucial aspect of foreign language acquisition. This aligns with Krashen’s (1992) Reading Hypothesis. As the curricula suggests, the students in an English classroom should be exposed to different types of texts, including multimodal literature. Therefore, the chosen literature for this research consists of both a novella and a graphic novel. The theoretical framework I have used to scaffold my research is Reader Response Theory, drawing specifically on the work of Iser and Rosenblatt. My methodology consists of a questionnaire with seventeen seventh-grade students from a school in rural Trøndelag exploring the readerly responses of extracts from two different versions of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. In addition, I have also analyzed the two extracts given to the students to examine how different elements of the extracts may contribute to the readers’ experience and response to the texts. To develop an understanding of what are the differences in the child reader’s readerly response to the novella vs. the graphic novel and what this could imply for the EFL classroom, I will attempt to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the differences between the traditional novella and the graphic novel? 2) Based on Iser and Rosenblatt’s reader response theories, how does the child reader perceive and experience the content of the Coraline extract given to them

There is a long history of marginalized groups of people being ignored and misrepresented in children’s literature and media, for instance Black people being portrayed in a stereotypical way in roles such as servants or slaves, often subservient or secondary to leading white characters. The lack of authentic representation in children’s literature can potentially, in an educational context, harm students’ self-image. This study examines contemporary picturebooks that feature young female protagonists of color. Over fifty texts from various online lists on diverse children’s literature were assessed based on certain criteria, before four picturebooks were selected for a further analysis of the whole narrative. All texts present a central character from a marginalized group of people, and the stories are told from an ecocritical perspective. A close analytical reading based on Gillian Rose’s (2012) four sites of a critical visual methodology revealed that the picturebooks depicted empowering representations of Black and Indigenous girls. Additionally, the analysis of the relationship between child and nature indicates that ecocritical literature provokes children to develop their critical thinking abilities, as well as encourage positive environmental attitudes and values. Previous research confirms that exposure to multicultural children's literature and specifically racially diverse picturebooks can help expand students' perception of cultural diversity. However, several studies have highlighted a lack of authentic representation of race in school libraries

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
