Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Abstract: The way in which certain indigenous groups interact with space and the influences of spatial aspects on the way of life of communities, constitute the central theme of the study, that was developed focusing on research of the Kaingang People, their culture and the way how interacts and conceives the spaces where inhabits. The research is built from the analysis of the Indigenous Reserve Kondá Village and the Traditional Territory Toldo Chimbangue, two Kaingang communities, located in the city of Chapecó - SC, which despite being oriented by the same cultural base, have different physical arrangements and establish relationships with the city in a different way. The study aims to identify and contextualize categories of socio-spatial analysis to be considered in spatial interventions in the contemporary village so that the Kaingang way of life can be contemplated. To this end, the research is developed in three main stages: 1) frame of reference, 2) the field and 3) analysis, synthesis and results. The framework refers to the construction of the theoretical framework and has as themes: culture and identity in the human and spatial perspective; the spatial language and the person-environment relationship. The field describes the research developed through interaction with the Kaingang communities and contemplates three central stages: The first one, which studies the Kaingang culture and the regional context, is built on bibliographic research, oral history reports with researchers from the region and exploratory visits to the communities indicated by them. The second stage is carried out in the two focus communities of the study, Indigenous Reserve Konda Village and Traditional Territory Toldo Chimbangue, and adopts exploratory visitation techniques, interviews with the use of Oral History reports, Wish Poem technique, analysis of physical traits and elaboration of graphic spatial expressions. The last stage is the participant experience, which relied on the researcher's permanence in the communities studied in order to understand the logic of spatial occupation and the daily interactions established between the residents and the different places of the village. Finally, the analysis, synthesis and research results are presented with the presentation and description of the identified spatial analysis categories. This research sought to study the two communities cited and considers the importance of continuing to study the other lands occupied by indigenous people of the Kaingang communities and other ethnic groups in order to identify spatial needs for other groups. It is believed that the research results may guide future spatial interventions in these areas so that they can be more appropriate to the context in which they are inserted and respect the cultural specificities of the communities, since until now they had no material to address their cultural aspects related to spatial elements

Abstract : The social structures develop in relation to the spatial aspects that surround them, which are also a product of the interactions of man in space, configuring the mutual influence between these two factors. The spatial aspects considered in this research concern the predominant architectural typologies and the physical-urban arrangement elaborated by certain social groups in the territory they occupy. The social structure, on the other hand, addresses the concept of society, the relations between men, the organization of these relations, language, culture, and finally, their way of living. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to analyze how the Kaingang social structure manifests itself in the Architectural Space of the Kondá Village, Chapecó-SC. For this the research was divided into three stages: theoretical approach, case study and discussion and synthesis of the obtained results. The first stage consists of the presentation of the Panorama of Indigenous Peoples in the Latin American scenario, in Brazil and in Santa Catarina, as well as the reference points that lead to research based on the concepts of History and Anthropology, Environmental Psychology and Spatial Syntax. The second stage consists of the case study, where the methodological procedures adopted in the research are applied using the multi-method approach. The third stage seeks to develop, based on the initial theoretical approaches and the case study carried out, a discussion about the relationships found between the social structure of the community and the spatial aspects of the village. The results obtained with this research consist of a panorama of the socio-spatial configuration of Aldeia Kondá from four categories of analysis and reflection: 1) The image of the place presents the relations between the complementarity proposed by the traditional culture Kaingang and how the space of the village Is configured. 2) Physical Arrangement and private public relation, relates spatial aspects with concepts of appropriation, territoriality and privacy. 3) Architecture as identity, evidences the role of form and materials used in buildings in the actions of indigenous protagonism and 4) Socio-spatial behavior that discusses the role of places in human relations. The research highlights the need of professionals who design space to be attentive to the social actions of its users contemplating them in their projects and showing the observed relationship between space and society. Thus, it is necessary to understand social and cultural aspects of specific communities so that more appropriate urban and architectural interventions can be developed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
