Many studies have shown that translanguaging promotes inclusive and dynamic learning environments. However, little is known about multimodal techniques to improve student engagement and satisfaction. The present study aims to examine the impact of these combined strategies on student understanding, motivation, and identity construction in language acquisition. The study involved twenty students in the second semester of the English Language Education Department at a university in Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. The data were garnered through a quantitative method using a questionnaire and a qualitative method using in-depth interviews. Out of the total number of participants, five students were selected for in-depth interviews to explore rich data on students\u27 emotional, motivational, cognitive, and expressive responses to translanguaging. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically while the data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results suggest that adding translanguaging and multimodal strategies to the learning environment promotes a more engaging and inclusive atmosphere, thereby enhancing student satisfaction and language proficiency. Conversely, complications were identified for students with diminished proficiency requiring further assistance. The research emphasizes the potential of translanguaging to enhance linguistic competence, student confidence, and motivation, indicating that it is a valuable pedagogical tool in EFL classrooms

Navigating language barriers: Translingual discrimination and resilience among Indonesian migrant workers in Kuwait

This study examines the experiences of Indonesian migrant workers (IMWs) in Kuwait, focusing on the discrimination they face due to their multilingual abilities and the strategies they use to overcome this discrimination. Linguistic discrimination continues to significantly influence migrant workers, yet there is a lack of research on their experiences in Middle Eastern contexts. To address the gap, this study aims to explore the perceptions and reactions of individuals from immigrant and minority backgrounds toward linguistic prejudice. Data were gathered from three IMWs (two females and one male, aged 25–40) through semi-structured interviews, using a qualitative research method. The thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2019) along with Dryden and Dovchin’s (2021) translingual discrimination model and Dovchin’s (2019) strategies for combating language-based prejudice were employed to analyze the data. The results uncovered three primary manifestations of discrimination: accent-based prejudice, excessive correction, and stereotyping of those who speak 'broken English.' Additionally, those with immigrant-sounding names encountered name-based bias in public spaces such as hospitals. Initially, IMWs utilized nonviolent tactics such as altering their accents and ignoring offensive remarks. Gradually, they embraced more proactive strategies, such as expressing opposition to discriminatory behaviors and reintegrating their original language characteristics. These findings highlight the ability of IMWs to demonstrate resilience in the face of discrimination and emphasize the importance of implementing inclusive language policies to promote fairness in global work environments. This study enhances the understanding of linguistic barriers and prejudice while offering valuable insights into fostering inclusive work settings for migrant workers

From Critique to Insight: Student Voices on English Writing Feedback

This study delves into the pivotal role of feedback in English writing instruction, a crucial element for enhancing language proficiency and writing skills among English language learners. The primary aim of the research is to examine students' perceptions of teacher feedback and to identify the types of feedback they receive, which are essential for improving teaching strategies and student outcomes. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the research analyzed responses from 22 students, collected through a questionnaire adapted from the frameworks of Lee (2011) and Ellis & Sheen (2011) to reflect the local educational setting. The results reveal a mixed reception to teacher feedback: while it is valued for improving writing skills, it also sometimes causes confusion and anxiety due to unclear instructions or the use of complex metalinguistic symbols. The types of feedback reported include direct, indirect, and metalinguistic feedback. Direct feedback proved effective in enhancing clarity and understanding, whereas indirect and metalinguistic feedback was occasionally linked to negative emotions such as anxiety and embarrassment. Despite these challenges, the study concludes that properly structured feedback can significantly foster cognitive development, prompting students to refine their thought processes, explore ideas independently, and become adept at self-correction. This underscores the need for educators to consider both the content and delivery of feedback to maximize its effectiveness and minimize potential stressors for learners
