    Deep eutectic solvents interaction with asphaltenes: A combined experimental and molecular dynamics study

    Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are industrially promising solvents and posses numerous applications in wide areas such as metal processing, synthesis media, synthesis of nanoparticles, gas sequestration and many more. In this work, we synthesized and investigated the performance of three deep eutectic solvents (DESs) i.e., reline, glyceline and ethaline in the separation of pure asphaltene from organic solvents, i.e., toluene and n-heptane using experimental techniques and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The DESs are prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and density meter analysis. The separation and aggregation of asphaltene from the organic solvent phase into the DES phase at various DES concentrations are visually observed using optical microscopy. MD simulations are used to probe the end-to-end distance and diffusion coefficient of the asphaltene molecules in DESs-organic solvent mixtures. Further, the trajectory density contours of asphaltene in three DESs-toluene/n-heptane systems are calculated to analyze asphaltene aggregation in the presence of the DESs. Our experimental-simulations synergistic study shows the superior performance of glyceline DES in toluene and reline DES in n-heptane for efficient separation of the asphaltene.Team Poulumi De

    Certified random : a new order for co-authorship

    Alphabetical name order is the norm for joint publications in economics. However, alphabetical order confers greater benefits on the first author. In a two-author model, we introduce and study certified random order: the uniform randomization of names made universally known by a commonly understood symbol. Certified random order (a) distributes the gain from first authorship evenly over the alphabet, (b) allows either author to signal when contributions are extremely unequal, (c) will invade an environment where alphabetical order is dominant, (d) is robust to deviations, (e) may be ex ante more efficient than alphabetical order, and (f) is no more complex than the existing alphabetical system modified by occasional reversal of name order

    Introduction  Plexiform neurofibroma is a benign tumor of peripheral nerves arising from a proliferation of all neural elements. Clinically, it presents as a subcutaneous mass which feels like a "bag of worms". Case Report  A 23-years-old male with a swelling over left side of the face large enough to involve whole one side of the face. There was tenderness and the swelling had a very peculiar consistency, soft in most of the areas with few firm nodular areas. Operative procedure: surgery was done in two stages. Initially subtotal excision was done and 3 months later re-explored to excise the recurrent disease. Complete excision was not possible. Discussion Plexiform neurofibroma (PNF) occurs due to overgrowth of neural tissue in the subcutaneous region. Surgical management remains the mainstay of treatment but functional disturbances are almost inevitable while resecting tumors involving the head and neck region. Resection and de bulking of invasive PNF is however associated with a high rate of recurrence. One of the limiting factors is vascularity of these lesions and their abnormal propensity to bleed. Conclusion  Although benign, plexiform neurofibromas can cause pain, disfigurement and functional changes and more importantly, may turn malignant. Surgery should be attempted considering psychological benefits

    A study on the Indications of Tonsillectomy as encountered in a Tertiary Government setup of Northeastern India

    Introduction: Tonsillectomy is one of the commonly performed surgical procedure in Otolaryngology practice. Though there have been different studies and guidelines on the indications of tonsillectomy, doubt still persists in few cases; whether Tonsillectomy will be beneficial over conservative treatment. In this study, we endeavor to evaluate the existing and emerging trends of the Indications of Tonsillectomy, to identify patients who are the best candidates for Tonsillectomy, to evaluate whether Tonsillectomy is conducted keeping in view the standard available guidelines by comparing with the available evidence based literature. Materials and Methods: A 2 years prospective observational study was carried out in the Department of ENT, Silchar Medical College and Hospital, with 233 patients, who were selected as the candidates for Tonsillectomy, from April 2014 to March 2016. Results: Recurrent Tonsillitis (74.67%), meeting standard guidelines, was the most common indication of Tonsillectomy in our study, followed by Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) (14.59%) Other indications were Stylalgia, Suspected Neoplasia in unilateral Tonsillar enlargement, Recurrent Peritonsillar abscess, Recurrent Tonsillitis with Serous Otitis Media. There were a couple of Tonsillectomy cases in our study which did not meet the available guidelines. Conclusion: The different trends and guidelines followed for the indications of Tonsillectomy in different places and set-ups is attributed to the physicians’ varying practices and to the patients’ varying conditions and compliance. Further large scale studies are warranted to reach some unanimous guidelines for the indications of Tonsillectomy

    Capitalized value of evolving flood risks discount and nature-based solution premiums on property prices

    Nature-based solutions (NbS) are a cornerstone of climate change adaptation worldwide. Yet, evidence on their economic benefits is scarce, especially since the provided environmental amenities usually spatially correlate with climate-induced hazards, effects of which NbS aim to curb. This lack of empirical evidence creates obscurity regarding social acceptability of NS, hindering their uptake and upscaling. We apply hedonic price models to estimate homeowners' willingness-to-pay for NbS (like flood safety, environmental benefits), while controlling for spatio-temporal changes in capitalized flood risk discounts due to the 1993-1995 floods in the Limburg Province, the Netherlands. We reveal a pre-flood effect of 5.6% (discounting on average -€12,753 for flood-prone properties), which rises to 10.9% (−€24,691 on average) immediately after the floods. However, the effect is only transitory. The flood discount of home values price discount diminishes over time and eventually vanishes in 9–12 years, which coincides with the implementation of the largest and oldest NbS intervention in the Netherlands. Our analysis shows that NbS amenities provide a 15% (€33,687 on average) premium to nearby residential property prices. This evidence of the evolving flood risk discount and the stable NbS premium for individual homeowners could support the economic feasibility and wide acceptability of NbS for climate change adaptations

    To study the selective potentiality and anti-tumor activity of CAP in oral cancer treatment

    Oral Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in India, specifically in its Northeastern region. India holds about one third cases of the total oral cancer in the world. According to a report (2018), India holds 1,19,992 new cases of oral cancer and 72,616 deaths. Current approaches in cancer treatment mainly include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These treatments often give a morbid outcome and reduce survival rate. This is mainly due to their non-selective nature to kill the tumor cells along with the normal cells. Recently the potential of Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) in cancer treatment is gaining great interest among scientists and researchers. This is mainly due to the enhanced selective nature of the CAP in targeting and killing the tumor cells without affecting the surrounding tissue and causing minimal side effects. Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen species (RONS) are the main contributors of the efficacy of CAP in killing cancer cells. Although many attempts have been made to understand the underlying mechanism of CAP in cancer treatment, there is a lack of detailed studies with respect to different treatment conditions. The use of CAP can be a potential innovative therapy in the upcoming days and more clinical trials should be encouraged to prove its efficacy and relevance in clinical purpose
