When God Says Remember
We all have things we need to remember-birthdays, anniversaries, things we intend to buy at the grocery store, and meetings we are supposed to attend. What\u27s more, if someone you really care about asks you to remember something, you go to great lengths not to forget. But what if God tells you to remember something? God does tell us to remember many things. In When God Says Remember, author Sandra Harner challenges you with nine specific things that God wants you to remember, as revealed in nine Bible verses. When God commands us to remember something, as he does in these verses, we know it must be vital. Cette œuvre, qui traite des mêmes thèmes que ceux des reportages sur la guerre du Vietnam rédigés par Michael Herr pour le magazine Esquire (plus tard recueillis dans Dispatches), explore les limites du genre et montre les difficultés de présenter la guerre de façon conventionnelle. Cette représentation subjective et consciente de la guerre, cette esthétique peu conventionnelle aident l’artiste à mettre en avant la relation complexe entre la représentation littéraire et la réalité
Resonant Spaces: Electroacoustic Music and Ritual: A commentary on my recent music.
The following portfolio and commentary concerns music and performance works created between 2008 and 2012, and an exposition of the research, ideas, aesthetics and techniques that connect
these works. I will discuss in detail the role that archaeoacoustics has played in my composition of fixed and mixed media works and how it has influenced me aesthetically in my approach to live performance. I will also explain in each instance any actual data used from various research sources, and my metaphorical interpretation of various archaeological sites and acoustic phenomena. Similarly, I will discuss the concepts of shamanism, ritual and transcendence that have influenced me, and how these concepts are expressed in my instrumental works, fixed media and live performance pieces
Textual collisions: the writing process and the Modernist experiment
This dissertation explores textual junctures such as this in the compositional processes of James Joyce, Djuna Barnes, Mina Loy and Ezra Pound that illuminate how these modernists negotiated the fraught position of being an author in the early twentieth century. This approach marks a departure from conventional textual criticism as I look at the intersections between textual criticism and literary theory, demonstrating the effects different theories can have on our understanding of textual criticism. Recent innovations in textual scholarship influenced by poststructuralist theorists allow me to uncover and describe the extent to which each of these four authors construct a self-conscious version of authorship in relation to their larger Modernist aims. This examination reveals how Joyce, Barnes, Loy, and Pound were subject to numerous outside influences, personal insecurities and preoccupations throughout the writing process, indicating their desires to both manipulate and participate in the modernist project of innovation and experimentation. The first chapter addresses the evolution of Joyce??s pre-writing, drafting and revising processes as a form of textual gossip. Joyce excised material from much of his early writing, controlling his work as a gossiper controls rumors. As he becameincreasingly more inclusive in his writing process, he also reflected a more positive regard for gossip as a similarly inclusive process. The second chapter examines the revision and editing of Ryder, Nightwood, and The Antiphon. Barnes increasingly sought legitimacy for her work by subjecting it to the conventionalizing editing of T.S. Eliot and Emily Holmes Coleman. In the third chapter, I interrogate Pound??s poetic practices and his status as an expatriate in order to reveal how Pound felt as an exile to his own writing. The fourth chapter analyzes Loy??s marginal status in the modernist canon, arguing that she created a persona through her public presentation of herself in her poems that is responsible for her constant and perpetual rediscovery
Risk Factors, Unmet Needs, and Perceived Service Needs of Gender/Sexual Minority Emerging Adults in Phoenix
abstract: This exploratory quantitative study examined the risks and needs expressed by gender/sexual minority emerging adults in Phoenix, Arizona. Differences in experiences and perceived service needs between gender minorities and cisgender sexual minority emerging adults were also identified. Respondents (N=102) completed a 78-item questionnaire in March and April of 2015. Individuals reported high rates of risk factors and physical needs, with those individuals who were both gender and ethnic minorities more likely to report having a perceived service need than their cisgender white counterparts. In addition, the study found significant positive correlations between housing factors (i.e., having experienced homelessness, ever/currently being in foster care, not having a safe/stable living situation) and other risk factors and needs. Risk factors were also correlated with wishing for a different gender identity or sexual orientation. With the majority of the respondents reporting a service need, implications include the need for culturally competent and accessible services, as well as services that continue to build on the protective factors of having an accepting family, friend group, and a sense of belonging to a community.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Social Work 201
Assessing the satisfaction of adults with mental retardation living in the community
The present research indicates that the MLSS is a reliable and valid scale to measure personal satisfaction through the responses of the consumers of services in areas of community, friendships, recreation, and job.Quality of life has become an important issue in the provision of services to individuals with mental retardation, but few procedures are available to evaluate it. The Multifaceted Lifestyle Satisfaction Scale (MLSS) was designed to ask individuals with mental retardation about their personal satisfaction with several areas of their lives. The primary purpose of the present research was to assess the psychometric properties of this scale and provide the service delivery system a reliable and valid tool with which it could assess, evaluate, and improve the quality of life for individuals with mental retardation. Reliability was indexed through test-retest reliabilities, inter-rater agreement, and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha). Reliability data indicated that several subscales--community, friendships, recreation, and job--were sufficiently internally consistent (alpha =.519 to.910) to be considered unidimensional indices. Subscale test-retest correlations (r =.648 to.893) and inter-rater reliabilities (r =.912 to.947) were considered sufficient, especially for group assessment.Validity data were more complex. Concurrent validity was evaluated through correlations of the Personal Caretaker Questionnaire and the 1990 Quality of Life Questionnaire with the MLSS. Correlations between the Personal Caretaker Questionnaire and the MLSS for corresponding areas of satisfaction ranged from.213 to.468, all being statistically different from zero, p .05. The expectation that quality of life subscales as measured by the MLSS would correlate with corresponding quality of life subscales as measured by the 1990 Quality of Life Questionnaire was not supported (r = .209 to.245). Construct validity was evaluated through regression analyses that assessed the prediction of each of the MLSS subscales and its total score by age, sex, intellectual functioning level, and especially residential level of restrictiveness and provided some support for the construct validity of the MLSS. The prediction of the MLSS subscales by age was statistically significant, p .01, for only recreation, client self-determination, and the total, their prediction by intellectual functioning classifications was significant, p .01, only for recreation and the total, and their prediction by residential level was significant, p .01, for community friendships, recreation, job, and the total.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:41:30Z (GMT). En ese contexto, la montaña era vista como un gran templo que cubría y proporcionaba las aguas. Las altas cimas de los volcanes y cerros de importancia se miraban como depósitos de agua, y cuando había en ellos manantiales que fluían de sus cuevas se pensaba que eran brazos de mar, cuya función era la irrigación del entorno natural donde surgía la vida. Por ello se veneraban, igual que a los ríos y los lagos que formaban parte importante del culto acuático que signó de manera hegemónica y generalizada a los pueblos prehispánicos de Mesoamérica.This is a historical and anthropological essay, which argues that the Christian churches are an evocation of the Holy Mountain, abode of the precolumbian deity Tláloc, god of water. This is evident from the study of architecture, the analysis of its decorative elements and some religious practices which were carried out and implemented inside. All temples studied are located in villages surrounding the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. That is, in places where the rituals of worship to water and mountains that survive in this millennium have a home.</p
