Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The purpose of this dissertation is to link spiritual leadership in three diverse organizational environments-secular, religious (Islam) and eco-humanist (Fair Trade)- through a specific model of spiritual leadership, the Spiritual Leadership Model (SLM).The task is undertaken through three studies. Study 1 proposes a theoretical transposition of the SLM into Islam. The result of this transposition is the creation of an Islamic leadership model, the Islamic Leadership Model (ILM). Study 2 is a qualitative theory testing case study. It tests the ILM in an Islamic organization in Saudi Arabia. Study 3 is a qualitative theory building case study. First, it argues that spirituality can help Fair Trade to avoid dilution of its message and business. Second, this theoretical proposition is explored in a french coffee Fair Trade organization
Evolution of a sector. The role of management tools in the construction of organizational identity : the case of social non-profit organizations
This thesis focuses on the role of a management tool in the identity construction of anorganization. The voluntary sector has faced many changes for several years, it is becomingmore professional and whose management tools are evolving. Following the implementation ofthe PACTE law and the changes it causes within the Social and Solidarity Economy, non-profitorganizations (NPO) must face new challenges. This work proposes to mobilize the theory ofsocial regulation to discuss the interpretation of NPO actors in the face of the new rules imposedon them, and thus give an explanatory framework for the identity building induced bymanagement tools. Through an exploratory case study conducted with 22 NPO carrying outsocial actions, we have studied the changes they are undergoing and how they are coping withthem. From the detection of an "anomaly" (Sætre & Van de Ven, (2021), an inductive startingpoint for abductive research (Dumez, 2012), we develop the following research question: Howdoes a management tool transform the organizational identity of a structure? Our results showthat management tools are at the interface of the relationship between NPO and their funders. The tool, here the call for projects, is involved in a power relationship that allows those whosuggest its use to define how social action should be carried out and more generally to structurea sector of activity. By choosing whether or not to adopt the tools made available, NPO affirmthe evolution of their organizational identity, from militant NPO to social enterprise. Thestrengthening of identity then becomes a strategic axis, while the NPO’s economic model islooking for an identity hybridization at the crossroads of the association and the company
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Performance measure, incentive system and assignment of decision rights : an analysis of the performance through the prism of organizational design. The case of the French Riviera hotels
The marketing literature indicates that employees in contact with the customers in the service sector are prominent. This research in management accounting considers this result and investigates the relations between the control of operational performance and the organizational performance in the hotel industry. Specifically, we are interested in the relations between assignment of decision rights, performance measurement system and incentive system dedicated to employees in contact with customers, and we consider the effects of this organizational design on organizational performance. These relations are studied in light of the strategic concept of market orientation, this one being operationalized through a qualitative study of the concept of hotel value proposition. In order to test our agency model, we use a PLS approach on the basis of an empirical study of hotels in PACA. Our results indicate support to the hypothesized positive relations between assignment of decision rights and use of incentive systems, and between use of incentive systems and non-Financial measurement. We find no support to the hypotheses that organizational design is positively related to organizational performance, and that hotel value proposition influences organizational design. Overall, these results are consistent with prior literature indicating that assignment of decision rights and management control systems are complementary choices. Furthermore, they provide insights on the specificities of service activities, as they indicate the importance of non-Financial performance measurement in incentive systems at the worker level
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
