This study aims to discuss the types of regret that represent the effects of the protagonist's regret in Nicholas Spark's novel entitled The Best of Me, and to describe the effects of the protagonist's regret. This study is the result of a qualitative assessment of the regrets of the protagonist named Dawson Cole. The theory used in this study is the theory proposed by Zeelenberg (2007), and supported by Pieters R. A (2007). The results of this study indicate that there are two types of regret reflected in the novel; they are existential regret and regret of inaction. The cause of the protagonist's regret is that the protagonist avoids Amanda all his life, and his regret that he is inferior and unworthy to be with Amanda. The effect of the protagonist's regret is that he lies to his own feelings and remains single for the rest of his life

The purpose of this research was to describe poverty in Nunuk Y. Kusmiana’s novel Gadis Pesisir. The book describes Umar and his daughter Halijah. Umar was a fisherman who did not use modern fishing technology. This greatly affected his fishing abilities, which made the family poor. This study adopted the poverty descriptions proposed by Soeharto (2005), namely a material, social and income description. The material description included daily primary needs such as clothing, food, shelter, health service and education. The social description included social exclusion, dependence on others and an inability to participate in society. The description of income included the lack of income associated with the number of children in the family. This study used descriptive qualitative methods because this is the most suitable method for literary phenomena (Endraswara, 2011). The descriptive method does not use numbers but uses an appreciation of the interaction between the concepts that are being studied empirically (Semi: 1993). The data collection used sorting and noting. The results of the study indicated that material, social and income features are not fulfilled in this novel. Keywords: poverty, poverty description, material, social, incom

    No full text
This research aims to identify the types of illocutionary speech acts found in the main characters' utterances in Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel Malibu Rising. Using Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts, the study examines the contextual meanings behind these acts. A qualitative descriptive methodology was applied, focusing on character dialogues as data. Data collection involved reading and analyzing dialogues, selecting utterances containing illocutionary acts. Analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s framework, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion/verification. Results reveal that the main characters' utterances incorporate five types of illocutionary acts: representatives, directives, declaratives, commissives, and expressives, with directives and expressives being predominant. The research underscores the role of competitive and conflicting speech acts in character interactions, demonstrating how these acts advance the narrative and depict social dynamics. Findings suggest that illocutionary acts in Malibu Rising illustrate internal states, facilitate social interactions, and navigate interpersonal relationships. This study offers insights into the pragmatic functions of language in literature, enhancing understanding of how speech acts reflect real-life communication and contribute to character development and narrative structure. Future research could build on these findings by examining illocutionary acts in various literary genres and comparing their use across different authors and themes

This research analyses the negative attitudes of the protagonist in The Best Laid Plans written by an American novelist, Sidney Sheldon. The novel tells the revenge of the selfish and ambitious protagonist Leslie Stewart who has been so obsessed with destroying Oliver's reputation for betraying him. Leslie is the most fascinating figure in the whole course of the story between his selfish and ambitious attitude and his madness. She feels that she has been neglected and cast away and this hardens his heart, until she does not care about the feelings of others. This phenomena is compatible with a theory of selfish in which it is stated that When talking, he does not care about the feelings of others. If there is a division of something he is selfish. He never thought that his actions caused many people to be harmed (Poniman, 2007). This research adopts qualitative method supported by relevant theories, one of which is proposed by Creswell (2009). The result reveals that there are two dominant attitudes emerging from the analysis, those are selfish and ambitious

FEMALE RIVALRY IN ELENA FERRANTE’S MY BRILLIANT FRIEND: A SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACH

    No full text
This study analyzes the phenomenon of female rivalry in Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend, focusing on the complex relationship between the two protagonists, Elena “Lenu” Greco and Raffaella “Lila” Cerullo. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and the sociology of literature approach, the research explores both the contents and underlying factors of their rivalry. Data were collected through close reading and analyzed based on theoretical frameworks concerning female competition. The findings reveal that the rivalry between Lenu and Lila centers on three main dimensions: attractiveness, encompassing Lila’s intellectual brilliance and magnetic personality; beauty and physical appearance, which create deep insecurities for Lenu; and similarity of interests, particularly their shared passion for learning and recognition. These dynamics are further intensified by two driving factors: competition for male attention and Lenu’s persistent lack of self-confidence. The study concludes that female rivalry, even within a deep friendship, functions as both a source of motivation and emotional struggle, reflecting broader societal expectations surrounding women’s beauty, intellect, and desirability

Politeness As a Discursive Practice in The Film Dear John a Critical Discourse Analysis: English

    No full text
Politeness is not merely a pragmatic strategy in interpersonal communication but also a discursive practice shaped by power relations, ideology, and social context. This study examines politeness as a discursive practice in the film “Dear John” (2010) using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The goal of the study is to reveal how politeness strategies are constructed, negotiated, and contested through language in intimate relationships portrayed in the film. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data consist of selected dialogues between the main characters, John and Savannah, which contain politeness-related expressions. The analysis integrates Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of CDA: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings show that politeness strategies in “Dear John” function not only to maintain interpersonal harmony but also to reflect unequal emotional power, moral positioning, and ideological assumptions about love, sacrifice, and gender roles. Positive politeness dominates the interactions, while negative politeness and off-record strategies emerge in moments of conflict and emotional distance. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of politeness theory and CDA to demonstrate how politeness operates as an ideological and discursive resource within romantic narratives. This study contributes to discourse studies, pragmatics, and literary discourse analysis
