Pull-E- The assistive shopping trolley
The aging society puts an increasingly heavy demand on the health care system. Elderly often have difficulties in mobility, reducing opportunities for exercise and social interaction that activities like running errands or shopping normally offer. This thesis proposes a novel concept for an assistive motorised shopping trolley, called Pull-E. Based on interview results with elderly (n=40) the Pull-E should be able to carry heavy loads (~20 kg) and still move easily and lightly while pulled over flat ground, curbs, and even stairs; and should ideally also be able to move autonomously, without being pulled. It should therefore have capabilities to balance itself, climb the stairs, carry items, and resistperturbations.First, a small proof-of-concept of the Pull-E was built, using tri-wheels which are separately powered by motors, that allow assistive stair-climbing when the Pull-E is pulled horizontally. In order to balance itself the tilt angle of the trolley needs to be measured. Therefore, the Pull-E was equipped with a gyroscope and an accelerometer. From this prototype one of the most challenging aspects emerged: stabilising the trolley. The next step was to choose a suitable control system. Since humans can adapt to themovement of other humans, climb the stairs, and resist perturbations of other humans, thehuman inspired control theories have been investigated.Based on the literature search the risk-aware control was the most promising one. In caseof risk-aware control a value function is provided to the system, by which it can avoid theundesirable states. By using a value function it does not require the calculation of exacttrajectories and therefore, it becomes computationally more efficient, than the other humaninspired control methods. In addition it learns and adjusts its control parameters by whichit can adapt to different situations. In order to test its efficacy, it was implemented and tested in a simulation of the Pull-E,where a planar projection of the tri-wheeled actuated trolley was dynamically simulated.Force inputs could act on the trolley by using the mouse, as well as pre-determined sinusoidsacting on its centre of mass. The simulation showed the risk-aware control method alreadyresulted in instabilities when no perturbations affected the system. So far, the risk-aware control method was tested only for zero order systems. Therefore an adaptation of the riskawarecontrol method was made to allow the 2nd order system, by including angular velocitiesin the state and modifying the value function. This control method is able to balance theassistive trolley for forces that cause lower angular perturbations than 15 degrees. In the future this control method needs to be improved to become more robust againstperturbation. The prototype needs to be rebuilt with stronger motors, and the control systemneeds to be tested on the prototype. Finally, this prototype will be evaluated when human isin the loop.To conclude, Pull-E can facilitate elderly’s longer independence, but still a lot of work needsto be done before it becomes a viable product.Biomedical Engineerin
Bringing digital scribes into orthopedic consultations: Towards AI-assisted clinical documentation
Clinical documentation takes up 40% of clinicians’ time. To ease the administrative burden of clinicians, digital scribes offer the potential to automate clinical note taking. Digital scribes are intelligent documentation softwares that combine automated speech recognition (ASR) and natural language processing (NLP). Digital scribes transcribe clinician-patient consultations and convert the conversation into structured clinical notes. Attendi, the client is developing a digital scribe for orthopedics: the Assistant. Hip arthrosis consultations have a well-structured anamnesis, therefore a promising use case for the digital scribe. This Master thesis investigates the clinician perspective of implementing the Assistant. Literature was reviewed to understand the problem space and the design implications of the enabling technologies. Core concepts in human-AI collaboration such as system transparency and human control were identified to design for hybrid documentation. Also, the perspectives of recording consultations were translated into values for hospitals, clinicians and patients. The findings lead to both mutual benefits and tensions for the clinician-patient relationship and obstacles for implementation. To contribute to developing the Assistant, user research was carried out in context by shadowing orthopedic surgeons to see their day-to-day workflow and understand the current cycle of clinical documentation. Several surgeons were interviewed to gain more in-depth views about the digital scribe. As synthesis, personas and journey maps were created both for a typical consultation cycle and a daily workflow. From the research phase, a list of user requirements were gathered in order to aid the design phase and future development. Finally, the envisioned user journey is presented in a service blueprint with the developed interface of the Assistant.Integrated Product Design | Medisig
Case Study on Translating a Medical Record into B Language: How do the Translator's Competences Advocated by the EU Appear in the Case of a Real-life Assignment?
AbstractThe case study follows the translation of a medical document between two relatively small European languages, from Hungarian into Dutch, from the moment the translation agency approaches the translator to the last review of the proofread version. Through the analysis of the changes made in the text, and the quality control mechanisms employed by the translation agency involved in the process, the quality of the translator's work is assessed. The process is explored from the viewpoint of the model for the competences of the professional translator (EMT Expert Group, 2009). The competences include language, intercultural, information mining, technological, thematic and translation service provision competence. With the help of the model, the strengths and weaknesses of the translation can be explored and the conclusions are also informative for the field of translation training
Extensive Reading for Increasing Vocabulary Acquisition in English Lessons in Form 3
The topic of the Diploma Paper was chosen because the author was wondering why some people had been learning a foreign language for years but could not express themselves clearly, whereas others spent few months in a language environment and started speaking confidently. The author believes that it is connected with language learning and language acquisition. The aim of the paper was to find out what substitute of language environment could be used during English lessons in primary school, which would allow students knowing more words and remembering them. It was found out that extensive reading could create the language environment. Due to this, the author started researching how extensive reading may increase vocabulary acquisition in Form 3. The research method is a case study during which students were given 2 questionnaires, 12 lessons with extensive reading were conducted, and students received vocabulary tests for checking if they had learnt any new vocabulary during extensive reading lessons. Another teacher of English was invited to observe one of the lessons and give the interview after that. The Diploma Paper may be used as a guideline for teachers who have already used or plan to use extensive reading at their lessons
Assistive Shopping Trolley Controller Design for the Elderly
We are living in an aging society, which is putting an increasingly heavy strain on our healthcare system. As people age many become less mobile, leading to loneliness and a deteriorating health. Subsequently elderly often end up in nursing homes; an experience which is unpleasant as well as expensive. Assisting the elderly with robotic devices can help increase their mobility, therefore reducing healthcare costs and increasing elderly satisfaction. This thesis follows up on the master thesis of R. Berci-Hajnovics, where she sets out to design a novel concept for an assistive, motorized shopping trolley aimed at reducing the physical burden of carrying groceries over uneven terrain. In the current thesis, a control system for the proposed assistive shopping trolley is designed with the goal of attenuating disturbances like road inclination and added mass on the trolley’s dynamic behavior. Predictability of its behavior is considered as well in order to gain the confidence of the elderly user. An analysis of potentially suitable control types for implementation in the assistive shopping trolley has been performed, wherein their characteristics are compared on several different aspects relating to their predictability and disturbance attenuating behavior. Based on this analysis, a controller implementing a so called Disturbance Observer (DOB) is deemed best suited for the job. A DOB uses a dynamic model of the controlled plant to estimate the influence of present disturbances on the plant dynamics. This estimation can consequently be used to produce an opposing force, thereby canceling the effects of the disturbances. Furthermore, a DOB includes a filter which provides additional capabilities, such as robustness to uncertainty within the model and filtering of high-frequency noise in the data to further increase its performance. A DOB is most suitable for the current cause due to its overall adequate performance with respect to the imposed criteria, as well as its relatively high disturbance attenuation accuracy due to its ability to use the plant’s dynamics in making an estimation of the disturbances at play. Following the results of the analysis, this thesis proposes the implementation of a controller including a DOB for application in the assistive shopping trolley. In its design, a model of the trolley dynamics is being used, which provides a basis for the controller’s internal dynamic model. This model is furthermore used as a representation of the trolley plant in a stability analysis of the trolley-controller closed-loop behavior. The model is based on the dynamics of an inverted pendulum on wheels, with an additional constraint on the position of the trolley handle to represent the interaction with the human user. By neglecting minor, nonlinear dynamic effects such as variations in the trolley’s orientation and air drag, the general model is simplified to a linear equation. The controller’s internal model is constructed to represent the trolley’s nominal (desired) behavior, determined to be that of an empty trolley on a flat road, by substituting corresponding nominal values in the parameters of the general model. Subsequently, criteria for robust stability of the trolley-controller’s closed loop behavior are determined using a H_∞-approach; In this approach the system’s behavior is analyzed given the ‘worst-case’ uncertainties. Furthermore, the system’s performance with respect to disturbance estimation and noise filtering is analyzed using its loop transfer function. The insights gained from these analyses are used in the design of the controller and to make recommendations for future work. The obtained controller is implemented in the Robotic Operating System (ROS) framework; an open-source robotics platform which makes use of a decentralized system of processes, simplifying the creation and sharing of complicated software structures across a wide variety of applications. For this purpose, the controller is subdivided into multiple elements, each performing a specific function. These elements, called ‘nodes’, are submitted to a variety of unit tests to verify their proper implementation. The controller’s performance is put to the test in simulation using ROS’s accompanying simulation engine, ‘Gazebo’. The controlled trolley’s acceleration error is compared to that of a regular trolley in several scenario’s, where different types of disturbances are applied. The results show that the controller indeed reduces the effects of disturbances on the trolley’s behavior; the controller is able to recognize the trolley’s changing behavior due to an encountered disturbance and it correctly attenuates its effect by ordering the required compensatory motor torque. More research is required with respect to the effect of uncertainty within the model dynamics to ensure stability and controllability of the trolley system. Moreover, the closed-loop system response should be tested in the presence of various types of noise to determine how well the current results apply when the controller is used in a real-life scenario.https://gitlab.com/v.heusdens/assistive-shopping-trolley-control Controller- and simulation code accompanying this thesis work.Mechanical Engineerin
