Biomass supply for energetic purposes from some Cardueae species grown in Mediterranean farming systems
"In order to explore complementary biomass sources, field studies were conducted on Cynara cardunculus botanical varieties (globe artichoke and cultivated cardoon) for energy purposes. In addition, the potential of milk thistle (Silybum marianum L. Gaertn.) as a suitable energy crop for Southern Europe countries was investigated. The three different crops were compared over three years (2007-2010) in a Mediterranean environment (Sardinia, Southern Italy) for quantitative and qualitative (calorific value, ultimate and proximate analyses, ash composition) biomass characteristics. Annual biomass production across years averaged about 10, 4, and 16 Mg ha(-1) in cardoon, globe artichoke and milk thistle, respectively. The chemical analysis of biomass showed a similar composition among crops with a mean ash content of 14% and a higher calorific value of about 17 MJ kg(-1). Annual energy yield ranged between 64 GJ ha(-1) reached by globe artichoke and 275 GJ ha(-1) reached in milk thistle. The exploitation of globe artichoke crop residues for energetic purpose can represent a complementary income for farmers. The present study confirms the good biomass yield of cardoon in cultivation systems characterized by limited water input and indicate milk thistle as a promising crop for biomass production. Future work is necessary in order to investigate different genotypes of the three crops for potential biomass and grain yield and their chemical composition, to detect agronomic practices suitable to optimize qualitative crops performances and to set up specific cropping systems. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Environmental consequences of the conversion from traditional to energy cropping systems in a Mediterranean area
The bioenergy production greatly runs around the controversial interconnections among food, energy and environment that have noteworthy implications in various spheres. Using a cropping system approach, this study aimed at evaluating environmental impact variations associated to switching from traditional cereal, forage and horticultural systems to food/energy ones under Mediterranean conditions. The alternative scenarios included the introduction of rapeseed as dedicated energy crop in the cereal cropping systems, the valorization of artichoke residuals for energy production in the horticultural system and the shift from forage to biomass for energy production in the forage systems. A "cradle to farm gate" consequential Life Cycle Assessment approach was used that allowed to identify the environmental "hot spots" of the agricultural practices. The introduction of rapeseed into cereal crop systems and, to a lesser extent the conversion of forage systems into energy systems, showed positive effects on the environmental farming sustainability, with a variation of 32% and 8% burdens on land basis, respectively. The harvesting of artichoke residues for energy production required additional energy inputs leading to an increased impact compared to the solely edible heads harvest (+88%) on land basis. These findings provide useful information for improving agricultural practices and designing land allocation options among crops of these Mediterranean cropping systems aiming to minimize food/energy competition and environmental burdens
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
