    Beyond Standard Model and Exotics

    No full text
In this work the discovery potential of the ATLAS and the CMS experiments is discussed for physics beyond the Standard Model. Different scenarios as supersymmetry, extra dimensions, new gauge bosons and new long-lived particles predicted by different theoretical models are considered. Particular focus is given on signatures which can be observed in the first year of LHC running. For each analysis, details on the experimental techniques to extract backgrounds from data and to reduce the most relevant systematics are given

A model for proton-assisted electron transfer

    No full text
Proton-assisted electron transfer is a little studied but interesting possibility for long-range electron transfer in systems where several substructures are packed together by hydrogen bonds. The mechanism operates as follows. An electron is fed to an acceptor molecule A; the protons of the H-bond chain which connects A to another redox site D move in the direction of the extra negative charge, localizing the negative charge on D; D releases an electron to an outer electron acceptor group; the reverse shift of the H-bond protons carrying an electron restores the original situation. Precision Timing with the CMS MTD Barrel Timing Layer for HL-LHC

    No full text
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is undergoing an extensive Phase II upgrade program to prepare for the challenging conditions of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). A new timing detector in CMS will measure minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) with a time resolution of 30-40 ps for MIP signals at a rate of 2.5 Mhit/s per channel at the beginning of HL-LHC operation. The precision time information from this MIP Timing Detector (MTD) will reduce the effects of the high levels of pileup expected at the HL-LHC, bringing new capabilities to the CMS detector. The barrel timing layer (BTL) of the MTD will use sensors that are based on LYSO:Ce scintillation crystals coupled to SiPMs with TOFHIR ASICs for the front-end readout. In this talk we will present motivations for precision timing at the HL-LHC and an overview of the MTD BTL design, including ongoing R&D studies targeting enhanced timing performance and radiation tolerance

    Exotica searches in CMS

    No full text
The CMS experiment collected 36 fb −1 of pp collision data in 2016. Based on this statistics different searches for new physics in several final states have been conducted. We present the new results for final states with leptons and missing transverse energy, high momentum top quarks, and high mass dijets
