On tests of general relativity with binary radio pulsars
No full textThe timing of radio pulsars in binary systems provides a superb testing ground of general relativity. Here we propose a Bayesian approach to carry out these tests, and a relevant efficient numerical implementation, that has several conceptual and practical advantages with respect to traditional methods based on least-squares fit that have been used so far: (i) it accounts for the actual structure of the likelihood function - and it is not predicated on the Laplace approximation which is implicitly built in least-squares fit that can potentially bias the inference - (ii) it provides the ratio of the evidences of any two models under consideration as the statistical quantity to compare different theories, and (iii) it allows us to put joint constraints from the monitoring of multiple systems, that can be expressed in terms of ratio of evidences or probability intervals of global (thus not system-dependent) parameters of the theory, if any exists. Our proposed approach optimally exploits the progress in timing of radio pulsars and the increase in the number of observed systems.We demonstrate the power of this framework using simulated data sets that are representative of current observations

No full textVascular malformations are common lesions accounting for approximately 7% of all benign tumours, the majority of which develop in the head and neck region. Generally, vascular malformations such as lymphangiomas, haemangiomas, and arteriovenous communications in the head and the neck represent only an aesthetic problem. However, when localized in the tongue, these lesions can create clinical problems consisting, in the majority of cases, in spontaneous haemorrhage from the mouth. Although uncommon, progressive asymmetric growth of the tongue (macroglossia) can be also observed. Three consecutive cases of vascular malformations of the tongue have been studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Neither contrast medium administration nor angio-MR technique was used. In our experience, MR appears to be the ideal technique to define the site, extension and origin of vascular malformations, due to its ability to depict the typical signal flow voids in the lesions and to differentiate slow-flow lesions from high-flow ones. © 2006 The British Institute of Radiology

No full textThe exhibitionist auto-figuration of Pedro Juan Gutiérrez and other "dirty realists", prodigal in sexual prowess, symbolizes a sort of rite of passage from the poetics of the Latin American Boom to another where the author is conceived as Sex Bomb. This auto-figuration is articulated not only in the fictional texts, but also from the interviews and videolits, and the website and the blog of the Cuban, which reinforce the image of a tropical lover through photographs, filming and testimonies. Through this lure, Gutiérrez floods the European publishing market to reveal the Zeitgeist of the Cuba of the \u2790s, whose marks of the real by antonomasia are hunger and lack.La autofiguración exhibicionista de Pedro Juan Gutiérrez y otros “realistas sucios”, pródiga en proezas sexuales, simboliza una suerte de rito de pasaje desde las poéticas del Boom latinoamericano hacia otra que concibe el autor como Sex Bomb. Dicha autofiguración se articula no sólo en los textos ficcionales, sino también desde las entrevistas y videolits, y el sitio web y el blog del cubano, que refuerzan la imagen de amante tropical a través de fotografías, filmaciones y testimonios.
