Short-term carbon mineralization in saline-sodic soils

    No full text
Previous studies have shown that carbon (C) mineralization in saline or sodic soils is affected by various factors including organic C content, salt concentration and water content in saline soils and soil structure in sodic soils, but there is little information about which soil properties control carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from saline-sodic soils. In this study, eight field-collected saline–sodic soils, varying in electrical conductivity (ECe, a measure of salinity, ranging from 3 to 262 dS m−1) and sodium adsorption ratio (SARe, a measure of sodicity, ranging from 11 to 62), were left unamended or amended with mature wheat or vetch residues (2% w/w). Carbon dioxide release was measured over 42 days at constant temperature and soil water content. Cumulative respiration expressed per gram SOC increased in the following order: unamended soil<soil amended with wheat residues (C/N ratio 122)<soil with vetch residue (C/N ratio 18). Cumulative respiration was significantly (p < 0.05) negatively correlated with ECe but not with SARe. Our results show that the response to ECe and SARe of the microbial community activated by addition of organic C does not differ from that of the less active microbial community in unamended soils and that salinity is the main influential factor for C mineralization in saline–sodic soils.Raj Setia, Deepika Setia, Petra Marschne

Soil salinity decreases global soil organic carbon stocks

Saline soils cover 3.1% (397 million hectare) of the total land area of the world. The stock of soil organic carbon (SOC) reflects the balance between carbon (C) inputs from plants, and losses through decomposition, leaching and erosion. Soil salinity decreases plant productivity and hence C inputs to the soil, but also microbial activity and therefore SOC decomposition rates. Using a modified Rothamsted Carbon model (RothC) with a newly introduced salinity decomposition rate modifier and a plant input modifier we estimate that, historically, world soils that are currently saline have lost an average of 3.47 tSOC ha(-1) since they became saline. With the extent of saline soils predicted to increase in the future, our modelling suggests that world soils may lose 6.8 Pg SOC due to salinity by the year 2100. Our findings suggest that current models overestimate future global SOC stocks and underestimate net CO2 emissions from the soil-plant system by not taking salinity effects into account. From the perspective of enhancing soil C stocks, however, given the lower SOC decomposition rate in saline soils, salt tolerant plants could be used to sequester C in salt-affected areas.Raj Setia, Pia Gottschalk, Pete Smith, Petra Marschner, Jeff Baldock, Deepika Setia, Jo Smit

Simulation of salinity effects on past, present, and future soil organic carbon stocks

Soil organic carbon (SOC) models are used to predict changes in SOC stocks and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) emissions from soils, and have been successfully validated for non-saline soils. However, SOC models have not been developed to simulate SOC turnover in saline soils. Due to the large extent of salt-affected areas in the world, it is important to correctly predict SOC dynamics in salt-affected soils. To close this knowledge gap, we modified the Rothamsted Carbon Model (RothC) to simulate SOC turnover in salt-affected soils, using data from non-salt-affected and salt-affected soils in two agricultural regions in India (120 soils) and in Australia (160 soils). Recently we developed a decomposition rate modifier based on an incubation study of a subset of these soils. In the present study, we introduce a new method to estimate the past losses of SOC due to salinity and show how salinity affects future SOC stocks on a regional scale. Because salinity decreases decomposition rates, simulations using the decomposition rate modifier for salinity suggest an accumulation of SOC. However, if the plant inputs are also adjusted to reflect reduced plant growth under saline conditions, the simulations show a significant loss of soil carbon in the past due to salinization, with a higher average loss of SOC in Australian soils (55 t C ha(-1)) than in Indian soils (31 t C ha(-1)). There was a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) between SOC loss and osmotic potential. Simulations of future SOC stocks with the decomposition rate modifier and the plant input modifier indicate a greater decrease in SOC in saline than in non-saline soils under future climate. The simulations of past losses of SOC due to salinity were repeated using either measured charcoal-C or the inert organic matter predicted by the Falloon et al. equation to determine how much deviation from the Falloon et al. equation affects the amount of plant inputs generated by the model for the soils used in this study. Both sets of results suggest that saline soils have lost carbon and will continue to lose carbon under future climate. This demonstrates the importance of both reduced decomposition and reduced plant input in simulations of future changes in SOC stocks in saline soils.Raj Setia, Pete Smith, Petra Marschner, Pia Gottschalk, Jeff Baldock, Vipan Verma, Deepika Setia and Jo Smit

The development of tourism in Indonesia is lagging behind compared to some of our neighboring countries like Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, despite the fact that Indonesia has many tourist attractions and culture that differ from his province. The World Economic Forum in 2009 put Indonesia in the position to 81, well below Singapore in position 10. By looking at the problem above, researcher wishes to conduct research to find out if there is an influence to the 14 tourism competitiveness criteria issued by the World Tourism Forum in 2009 as an independent variable, against the target of Indonesia tourism marketing as the dependent variable (to increase the number of tourists, the old residence, and tourist expenditures). In this study the authors used a questionnaire to obtain data from foreign tourists who visited Jakarta, especially foreign tourists who stay at Jalan Jaksa (Jaksa Street of Central Jakarta) from September to December 2009. The number of respondents as many as 150 people using the method of accidental sample. To test the validity of the use factor analysis. To analyze the data the author uses regression analysis of the F test, t test and coefficient of determination . The results of the analysis show that simultaneously there is a significant influence among the 14 criteria of competitiveness of tourism as an independent variable (X) with the objective of tourism marketing as the dependent variable (Y) and H1 accepted. T test value of each variable X shows that the variable X6 (air transport infrastructure) has positive influence to variable Y and H6 accepted. T test value for the variable X12 (tourist attraction) a positive effect on variable Y and H12 received. The findings above are very useful for decision makers in tourism in order to prioritize the development of tourism. Keyword : component: Number of Tourist, Tourist Night, Tourist Expenditur

From the observation at Setia Mitra Hospital, there have been issues relating to the appliance of electronic medical record (EMR) system. As we all know, the EMR system is currently starting to be a must use system on every hospital. The advancement of technology has shift the use of paper based medical record to EMR. But since it's still newly developed, the application of the system in a newly applied EMR on a hospital is an interesting topic for review. Therefore the writer has chosen this topic to be the main issue on this research. This research main purpose is to find and identify the application of EMR in Rumah Sakit Setia Mitra. For this research, the writer is using a qualitative descriptive research, in which the data colletion is based on the observation done by the writer and also based on interviews that's done with the medical record staffs, and will be analyzed and compared with theories that already exist as the based accepted method on EMR and it's application. The results of the research done by the writers have found that EMR application at Setia Mitra Hospital is not yet been applied according with the theory that's aready exist, and the mains source of this difference is because the EMR on the hospital's information system is still under heavy development. Therefore, the author has suggested that the completeness of the hospital information system must take priority, especeially regarding it's medical record system need to be pushed into an EMR system, so it can create a much more complete, better and robust health information management at RS Setia Mitra
