Making a market for Miscanthus: Can new contract designs solve the biofuel investment hold-up problem?

    Get PDF
We present designs for optimal contracts to solve the investment hold-up problem for perennial crops for the biofuel industry. A fixed-price contract is ex-ante efficient but renegotiation-proof for a limited range of discount parameters. A perfectly- indexed contract is both renegotiation-proof and ex-post efficient. Provided long-run land prices are stationary, the expected cost for both contracts converges to the long-run expected price of land for a risk-neutral farmer.Biofuels, Miscanthus, contract theory, industrial organization, renegotiation-proof contract, Marketing,

Special Issue Introduction:Historical Research on Institutional Change

    Get PDF
Both business historians and organisation studies scholars study institutional change to understand the interactions between business and society. However, research approaches differ fundamentally, with organisational research focusing on theory-driven explanations, whereas historical research is rather theory-informed. The consequence of such disciplinary orientation is that interdisciplinary conversations rarely occur. For this special issue, we invited submissions that address how historical research can contribute to our understanding of institutional change while demonstrating ‘dual integrity’ in terms of being significant pieces of historical research that provide us with new insights into historiography and at the same time addressing important theoretical concerns

"The collection of Talking Books, cassettes and magnetic tapes of the Division for the Blind and Physically Handicapped are basically accessible by an author and title listing. Over the years, a need for a basic subject heading list has become evident. In view of the fact that the computerized subject heading list will probably not be available until 1978, this project was undertaken to provide an interim document to assist the Regional and Subregional Libraries"--Project description

Less than an empire and more than British:Foreign investor competition in Ghana and Nigeria in the 1960s

    Get PDF
The post-war British Empire has been described as ‘more than British and less than an imperium’. Once decolonisation began, it was ‘nationalized and internationalized as part of the Anglo-American coalition’. This process continued after independence in Ghana and Nigeria, which experienced economic booms that attracted different international investors, sometimes with political motivation and frequently with home country support in terms of risk guaranties. These investments favoured contracting, turnkey factories and suppliers’ credit, which created a political economy of favouritism and corruption that saddled newly independent countries with significant amounts of debt when economic conditions deteriorated. Substantial competition between Western foreign investors, such as West Germany, the UK and the USA, were the result of a shared economic vision of Western economic dominance around the world

A new heuristic for the total tardiness problem with parallel machines

Biskup D, Herrmann J. A new heuristic for the total tardiness problem with parallel machines. Discussion paper / Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Universität Bielefeld. Bielefeld: Universität Bielefeld; 2007.Scheduling jobs against due dates is one of the most important and best examined objectives in scheduling theory and practice. In this paper the parallel machine version of the well-known total tardiness problem is considered. The objective is to minimize the total tardiness of the jobs, while for all jobs an individual due date is given. The single machine version has been proven to be NP-hard, hence it is unlikely to find polynomially bounded optimization algorithms. Consequently, we concentrate on developing an efficient heuristic. Our extensive computational results confirm that our new heuristic is capable to deliver near optimal results

Depreciation and impairment. A tradeoff in a stewardship setting

Scholze A, Wielenberg S. Depreciation and impairment. A tradeoff in a stewardship setting. Diskussionspapiere / Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Universität Bielefeld. Bielefeld: Universität Bielefeld; 2007.This paper examines the relationship between depreciation and future impairment losses. This relationship exists, since impairment losses can only be recognized if the carrying amount of an asset exceeds a certain recoverable amount that can be defined in different ways. Sufficiently large depreciation charges in the beginning of the asset's useful life make it very unlikely that an impairment acutally occurs in future periods. In the context of a multi-period agency model with ex ante long-term investment, and ex post short-term effort incentives, we will show that this relationship causes a tradeoff during the useful life of the asset. In order to induce efficient investment decisions, the investment cost has to be allocated over future periods according to a specific depreciation schedule. However, those depreciation charges decrease the likelihood that impairment losses will occur in later periods. Therefore the information content of the performance measure will be decreased as well. We apply our result to impairment tests according to IFRS and US-GAAP, the accounting for goodwill, and accounting rules for similar problems

Internal waves and turbulence in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

The definitive version was published in Journal of Physical Oceanography 43 (2013): 259–282, doi:10.1175/JPO-D-11-0194.1.This study reports on observations of turbulent dissipation and internal wave-scale flow properties in a standing meander of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) north of the Kerguelen Plateau. The authors characterize the intensity and spatial distribution of the observed turbulent dissipation and the derived turbulent mixing, and consider underpinning mechanisms in the context of the internal wave field and the processes governing the waves’ generation and evolution. The turbulent dissipation rate and the derived diapycnal diffusivity are highly variable with systematic depth dependence. The dissipation rate is generally enhanced in the upper 1000–1500 m of the water column, and both the dissipation rate and diapycnal diffusivity are enhanced in some places near the seafloor, commonly in regions of rough topography and in the vicinity of strong bottom flows associated with the ACC jets. Turbulent dissipation is high in regions where internal wave energy is high, consistent with the idea that interior dissipation is related to a breaking internal wave field. Elevated turbulence occurs in association with downward-propagating near-inertial waves within 1–2 km of the surface, as well as with upward-propagating, relatively high-frequency waves within 1–2 km of the seafloor. While an interpretation of these near-bottom waves as lee waves generated by ACC jets flowing over small-scale topographic roughness is supported by the qualitative match between the spatial patterns in predicted lee wave radiation and observed near-bottom dissipation, the observed dissipation is found to be only a small percentage of the energy flux predicted by theory. The mismatch suggests an alternative fate to local dissipation for a significant fraction of the radiated energy.SW acknowledges the support of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change, Imperial College London.
