It has been shown that the CAN bus can be accessed by remote attackers to disrupt/manipulate normal vehicular operations. Heavy-duty vehicles, unlike their lighter counterparts, follow a common set of communication standards (SAE J1939) and are often used for transporting critical goods, thereby increasing their asset value. This work deals with the internal communication security of heavy-duty vehicles and is aimed at detecting /preventing malicious activities that can adversely affect human lives and company fortunes reliant on such modes of transportation.CSU Ventures Drivers of Innovation - Platinum award
Review: The Gene: An Intimate History. By Siddartha Mukherjee
No full textDr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of the highly regarded and Pulitzer Prize winning The Emperor of All Maladies, has undertaken what he terms as an “intimate history” of the gene. Mukherjee’s medical credentials are impressive, yet they are also atypical for research and writing on the history of science. The Gene is impeccably written and expands our understanding of a well-known history through his unique viewpoint. In fact, Mukherjee’s work is reminiscent of another Pulitzer Prize winner, Jared Diamond. Originally a physiologist, Diamond, is best known for applying his scientific viewpoint to the Spanish Conquest in his 1997 Pulitzer Prize winning Gun’s Germs, and Steel.

Colonial Institutions and Civil War Indirect Rule and Maoist Insurgency in India
No full textWhat explains the peculiar spatial variation of Maoist insurgency in India? Mukherjee develops a novel typology of colonial indirect rule and land tenure in India, showing how they can lead to land inequality, weak state and Maoist insurgency. Using a multi-method research design that combines qualitative analysis of archival data on Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh states, Mukherjee demonstrates path dependence of land/ethnic inequality leading to Maoist insurgency. This is nested within a quantitative analysis of a district level dataset which uses an instrumental variable analysis to address potential selection bias in colonial choice of princely states. The author also analyses various Maoist documents, and interviews with key human rights activists, police officers, and bureaucrats, providing rich contextual understanding of the motivations of agents. Furthermore, he demonstrates the generalizability of his theory to cases of colonial frontier indirect rule causing ethnic secessionist insurgency in Burma, and the Taliban insurgency in Pakistan
A universal explicit electron correlation correction applied to Mukherjee's multi-reference perturbation theory
No full textWe present a universally applicable explicit electron correlation (F12) correction and apply it to Mukherjee's multi-reference perturbation theory (Mk-MRPT2). Two different F12 corrections are proposed: one is a universal F12 correction which is added to the conventional orbital correction, which is referred to as Mk-MRPT2+F12. In the second type of F12 correction the individual F12 contributions are added to each matrix element of the effective Hamiltonian. Subsequent diagonalization yields the Mk-MRPT2-F12 correction. Thereby, we achieve for both F12 corrections the accuracy of a quadruple-zeta basis set calculation when a triple-zeta basis set is employed and the F12 correction is added. Both F12 corrections reduce to MP2-F12/1A (fixed) in the single-reference limit. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. author with literary career that was acclaimed started from 1971. Mukherjee's works focus on
the phenomenon of migration, the status of new immigrants, and the feeling of alienation that
often experienced by expatriates as well as on Indian women and their struggle. Actually
Mukherjee as an immigrant makes her own struggle with identity first as an exile from India,
then as an Indian expatriate in Canada, and finally as an immigrant in the United States has
led to her current contentment of being an immigrant in a country of immigrant. (1998)
From that viewpoint, the writer concludes that Bharati’s works might provide several
evidences through her personal issues. Her novel Wife is actually the shape of women
experience. The story of Wife tells about two women named Dimple Dasgupta and Ina
Mullick. Dimple who have been suppressed by such men and attempts to be the ideal Indian
wives, but out of fear and personal instability, Dimple kills her husband and eventually
commits suicide. On the other hand, Ina Mullick tries harder to reach her dream; she wants to
be different from traditional Indian wives. This novel indicates the dilemma of the Indian
women whose social role arranged by tradition.
From those theoretical and historical reasons, the writer is interested to propose the
study about feminist view of Dimple Dasgupta and Ina Mullick as the main character in Wife

NAVIGATING THE SELF: DIASPORIC CARTOGRAPHIES IN THE FICTION OF BHARATI MUKHERJEE AND MEENA ALEXANDER
No full textThe beginning of the twenty-first century was marked with unprecedented migrations in the world that has changed the concept of home, belonging, and identity. Bharati Mukherjee and Meena Alexander are two of the key characters who argue on the multidimensionality of the diasporic consciousness in this shifting environment. South Asian origin and sense of acute exile, although both of them share them, take different directions in literary paths. Mukherjee fiction is a radicalized acceptance of assimilation and self-inventing and fetishizes the innovation of a new American identity through breaking and remaking. In his turn, Alexander texts are done in the manner of the lyrical speculations on fragmentation, memory and emotion bargaining of existence between worlds. In this paper, the author draws parallels between the manner in which both authors trace two distinct different diasporic cartographies Mukherjee by producing narratives of radical cultural transformation, and Alexander a poetics of multiple belonging and without-homelandness. The two halves of the immigrant experience they share are the exaltation of renewal and the agony of being in a transitional state that casts light on the issue of identity under the most mobile world
Mechanistic and synthetic studies on the prochlorosin and cytolysin families of lanthipeptides
No full textPeptides are an attractive class of therapeutics, occupying a niche between small molecules and biologics. Research in the van der Donk lab focuses on lanthipeptides, a class of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) that commonly feature antibacterial activity and contain the characteristic thioether residues lanthionine (Lan) and methyllanthionine (MeLan). Installation of thioether crosslinks in lanthipeptide biosynthesis is carried out by designated synthetases and involves dehydration of Ser/Thr residues and cyclization via Michael-type addition.
The remarkably broad substrate scope of the synthetase ProcM inspired us to explore its mechanism in detail (chapter 2). My studies on ProcM revealed the directionality of dehydration, the order of cyclization, and that, despite the impressive substrate scope, none of the cyclizations are non-enzymatic. In collaboration, we established the irreversibility of the Michael-type addition and proposed that the topology of the thioether rings is under kinetic control. Solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) was used to generate the substrates to study ProcM, and is also a flexibile tool to access non-native lanthipeptide analogues. Interestingly, a lanthipeptide, cytolysin S (CylLS”), exhibited cytolytic activity in synergy with cytolysin L (CylLL”). Given that a thioether crosslink in CylLS” has an unusual LL-stereochemistry, the synthesis of a diastereomer of CylLS” with the more common DL-stereochemistry was achieved by SPPS (chapter 3). We probed whether the cytolytic activity depended on the LL-stereochemistry observed in CylLS”. Surprisingly, the unusual LL-stereochemistry was found to be important for the antibacterial activity, but not necessary for the hemolytic activity of CylLS”. I have also synthesized another hydrophobic lanthipeptide analogue, the portion of microbisporicin that contains the A and B ring (chapter 4). We established that this motif is not recognized by the
halogenase MibH, and that the C terminus of microbisporicin is necessary for the chlorination by MibH.
During my graduate studies, I had the opportunity to collaborate in a different area of research in our laboratory, the phosphonates.
