Neon signs, underground tunnels and Chinese American identity : the many dimension of visual Chinatown
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Comparative Media Studies, 2008."June 2008."Includes bibliographical references (p. 111-113).What is Chinatown? Is it an imaginary construct, a real location, or a community? Is it an ethnic enclave only available to insiders, or a fabricated environment designed specifically for tourists? This thesis attempts to reconcile the multiple ways in which Chinatowns in the U.S. are conceived, understood, and used by both insiders and outsiders of the community. By using Henri Lefebvre's triad of spatial analysis (as detailed in The Production of Space), I create an analytical narrative through which to understand the layered dimensions of Chinatown through the realms of perceived, conceived and lived space. In the first chapter, I closely analyze the visual landscape of an actual location, Tyler Street in Boston's Chinatown, in order to decipher the spatial (and therefore economic and cultural) practices that shape the environment. In chapter 2, I discuss the representations of Chinatown, or the space as it has been conceived by media makers including photographers, writers and filmmakers. By looking at these through the lens of tourism, I create a framework for analyzing the many cinematic depictions of the neighborhood. In the last chapter, I return to the actual spaces of lived Chinatowns, in particular San Francisco's Chinatown as captured in the independent film Chan is Missing (1981), and Boston's Chinatown, as exemplified by three Chinese restaurants in the area. I use Erving Goffman's idea of everyday performance in order to dissect the ways in which people and spaces perform "Chinese-ness" for outsiders of the community. By focusing all three chapters on the material, tangible artifacts of the physical environment, or what I call 'Visual Chinatown,' I hope to create a unified vision of how spaces are created in popular culture.by Debora A. GIORGIO CORREGGIARI E LA FIGURA DELLO STILISTA IN ITALIA: 1967-1990
Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.
Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201
BARF1 AS A NEW THERAPEUTIC TARGET FOR EBV-ASSOCIATED MALIGNANCIES.
While Epstein-Barr virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (EBV-CTLs) have been used successfully for the prophylaxis and treatment of the highly immunogenic post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders, the clinical experience for other EBV-associated malignancies, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma and undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), is limited and the results obtained so far indicate that EBV-CTLs are less effective in these settings. Decreased CTL efficacy most likely reflects immune evasion strategies by tumor cells, including down-regulation of immunodominant EBV proteins and the weak immunogenicity of the viral proteins expressed. One of the possible approaches to overcome these limitations is the identification of additional immunogenic viral proteins expressed by tumor cells that may serve as tumor-associated antigens to be targeted by improved CTL induction and expansion protocols. We have recently demonstrated that NPC patients show strong spontaneous CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses specific for the EBV-encoded oncogenic protein BARF1. We also showed that BARF1 provides immunogenic HLA-A*0201-restricted epitopes, suggesting that exploitation of the immunogenic features of this viral antigen may help improve the current immunotherapeutic strategies for EBV-associated malignancies. On these grounds, we characterized more extensively the immunogenic properties of BARF1 with the final goal to develop improved protocols of adoptive immunotherapy based on the use of EBV-CTLs enriched in BARF1-specific effectors. In particular, we identified and validated additional BARF1 CTL epitopes presented in the context of common HLA class I alleles. These results strictly correlate to those deriving from a high-resolution HLA genotyping of a large series of NPC, giving a precise estimate of the immunogenicity of BARF1 in relation to the HLA class I profile of Italian NPC patients. To fully exploit the immunologic properties of BARF1, we are also developing and characterizing BARF1-specific monoclonal antibodies that may be of both diagnostic and therapeutic usefulness in these clinical settings. In future perspective, the proposed research may provide a strong rationale for the clinical application of improved adoptive immunotherapy protocols for the treatment of EBV-associated malignancies, particularly the less immunogenic forms, such as NPC and, possibly, Hodgkin’s lymphoma
A culture assessment of XYZ Manufacturing Company
Plan BWhat differentiates one successful, long-lasting company from another? The major distinguishing feature in comparing company’s success or non-success is in their most important competitive advantage and key ingredient to success – organizational culture. The long term success of companies has had more to do with company values, vision, and personal beliefs then market focus, competitive positioning, and resource advantage (Palmer, 1999). The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the current organizational culture of XYZ Manufacturing Company. The study assessed the organizational strengths and weaknesses, provided an aid for decision making during strategic planning, and established measures for benchmarking and evaluating change in the organization over time. In order to meet the goals of the study, data was gathered from 40 employees of the organization. The data was collected using a survey that was developed by the researcher through collaboration with the president of the organization and is based on the Denison Culture Model (2003). The survey was divided into four categories that included: Involvement, Business Principles, Working Relationships, and Employee Satisfaction and yielded a 77.5% response rate. Results of the survey are displayed into a circular model for ease of identifying and analyzing the areas of strength and concer
