The Measure Problem in Eternal Inflation: Introduction and Developments
Inflation is a paradigm for the physics of the early universe, receiving a great deal of experimental support. Essentially all inflationary models lead to a regime called eternal inflation, a situation where inflation never ends globally, but it only ends locally. The resulting picture is that of a multiverse: an infinite number of "bubbles", each of them containing an infinite universe. Extracting meaningful predictions on what physics we should expect to observe within our bubble encounters severe ambiguities. Hence the need to adopt a prescription to regulate the diverging spacetime volume of the multiverse. The problem of defining such a prescription is the measure problem, which is a major challenge of modern theoretical cosmology. This book provides an introduction to the measure problem, and proposes and explores a promising candidate solution: the scale-factor cutoff measure. Incremental firmware update over-the-air for low-power IoT devices over LoRaWAN
Remote firmware updates in Internet of Things (IoT) devices remain a major challenge due to the constraints of many IoT communication protocols. In particular, transmitting full firmware images over low-bandwidth links such as Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is often impractical. Existing techniques, such as firmware partitioning, can alleviate the problem but are often insufficient, especially for battery-powered devices where time and energy are critical constraints. Consequently, physical maintenance is still frequently required, which is costly and impractical in large-scale deployments. In this work, we introduce bpatch, a lightweight method for generating highly compact delta patches that enable on-device firmware reconstruction. The algorithm is explicitly designed for low-power devices, minimizing memory requirements and computational overhead during the update process. We evaluate bpatch on 173 firmware images across three architectures. Results show that it reduces update payloads by up to 39,000x for near-identical updates and by 9–18x for typical minor revisions, eliminating the need to transmit full firmware images. Experimental results further demonstrate significant time and energy savings, with performance comparable to more complex alternatives. bpatch is released as open-source and, although demonstrated on LoRaWAN, the approach is flexible and can be adapted to other IoT communication technologies
On resonant leptogenesis
It has been recently shown that the quantum Boltzmann equations may be relevant for the leptogenesis scenario. In particular, they lead to a time-dependent CP asymmetry which depends upon the previous dynamics of the system. This memory effect in the CP asymmetry is particularly important in resonant leptogenesis where the asymmetry is generated by the decays of nearly mass- degenerate right- handed neutrinos. We study the impact of the nontrivial time evolution of the CP asymmetry in resonant leptogenesis, both in the one. flavour case and with flavour effects included. We show that significant qualitative and quantitative differences arise with respect to the case in which the time dependence of the CP asymmetry is neglected
Cosmological aspects of spontaneous baryogenesis
We investigate cosmological aspects of spontaneous baryogenesis driven by a scalar field, and present general constraints that are independent of the particle physics model. The relevant constraints are obtained by studying the backreaction of the produced baryons on the scalar field, the cosmological expansion history after baryogenesis, and the baryon isocurvature perturbations. We show that cosmological considerations alone provide powerful constraints, especially for the minimal scenario with a quadratic scalar potential. Intriguingly, we find that for a given inflation scale, the other parameters including the reheat temperature, decoupling temperature of the baryon violating interactions, and the mass and decay constant of the scalar are restricted to lie within ranges of at most a few orders of magnitude. We also discuss possible extensions to the minimal setup, and propose two ideas for evading constraints on isocurvature perturbations: one is to suppress the baryon isocurvature with nonquadratic scalar potentials, another is to compensate the baryon isocurvature with cold dark matter isocurvature by making the scalar survive until the present
Electroweak lights from Dark Matter annihilations
The energy spectra of Standard Model particles originated from Dark Matter annihilations can be significantly altered by the inclusion of electroweak gauge boson radiation from the final state. A situation where this effect is particularly important is when a Majorana Dark Matter particle annihilates into two light fermions. This process is in p-wave and hence suppressed by the small value of the relative velocity of the annihilating particles. The inclusion of electroweak radiation eludes this suppression and opens up a potentially sizeable s-wave contribution to the annihilation cross section. I will discuss the impact of this effect on the fluxes of stable particles resulting from the Dark Matter annihilations, which are relevant for Dark Matter indirect searches.LPT
Simplified models vs. effective field theory approaches in dark matter searches
In this review we discuss and compare the usage of simplified models and Effective Field Theory (EFT) approaches in dark matter searches. We provide a state of the art description on the subject of EFTs and simplified models, especially in the context of collider searches for dark matter, but also with implications for direct and indirect detection searches, with the aim of constituting a common language for future comparisons between different strategies. The material is presented in a form that is as self-contained as possible, so that it may serve as an introductory review for the newcomer as well as a reference guide for the practitioner. © 2016, The Author(s)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
