Diagnostica virologica di PRRS: studio comparativo tra metodiche biomolecolari classiche ed innovative con campioni ottenuti da un'infezione sperimentale.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is reported as the most important disease currently affecting the pig industry worldwide. A comparative evaluation of 4 different molecular methods (RTPCR end-point and Real-time) on samples collected during an experimental infection trial was performed. TaqMan probe systems may be inefficient in detecting mutant viruses because of their genetic variability leading to a diagnostic failure. In-house assays can be easily adapted to new circulating strains being more flexible than commercial kits if they are not constantly updated

The Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) and My- coplasma hyopneumoniae are considered two of the most important pathogens associated to respiratory syndrome in the swine industry. The PRRSV infection’s dynamic has been studied on 15 gilts, both through serology (ELISA) and virology (RT-PCR), in a swine reproduction farm for 18 months. The same serum samples have been used to compare the dinamic of antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae through two commercial ELISA kits, indirect and competitive, to evaluate their use for diagnosis purposes especially in case of vaccination. The results concerning PRRS have shown that all the subjects have been infected during the acclimatization and that a reinfection occurred after almost one 373 year with an heterologous strain introduced later in the farm. The comparison of the two ELISA kits for the detection of antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae has shown a moderate correlation between the two kits, with a reactivity level strongly lower in the indirect reaction, and a dynamic not correlated to vaccination

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and the critical points of a control strategy for PRRS in a breeding herd based on the acclimatization of gilts. We collected samples for virological and serological testing from 10 groups of gilts at the end of the acclimatization in the period between April 2006 and July 2007. Some reproductive parameters of the first farrow sows (number of total born piglet, number of born alive piglets, number of born dead piglets and number of mummified piglets) were recorded and relate to immunity expressed as group antibodies prevalence, as individual immunological status (seropositive vs seronegative) and as group mean s/p ratio. The results show a season effect on the number of born alive piglets (their num- ber is significantly lower in the period April 2007 – July 2007). Serological status does not result significantly associated with reproductive performances

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
