The Law of Superheroes : J. Daily, R. Davidson

En tal sentido, se detallan de forma limitada aquí algunos problemas observados en la actualidad junto a posibles avances de futuro partiendo de la información contenida en el artículo más extenso ya publicado recientemente como ÁLVAREZ TORNÉ, M., “Current issues in the protection of adults from the perspective of Private International Law”, REEI, diciembre 2016, nº 32, disponible en: http://www.reei.org/index.php/revista/num32/notas/current-issues-inthe- protection-of-adults-from-the-perspective-of-private-international-law[eng] The present working paper has its origins in the paper presented by the author in May 2016 in the framework of the "Col·loqui amb joves investigadors: l'actualitat del Dret privat europea", organized by Dr Esther Arroyo, head of the Jean Monnet Chair of European Private Law UB. It focuses on certain issues in the analysis of the protection of adults from the perspective of Private International Law that the author intends to develop in a future contribution to be drawn up in this area. These refer to the current lack of a specific EU Regulation addressing this subject, the prospects of embracing new legislative developments and, in particular, the interaction between international instruments which cover certain aspects in this context, all this leading to the need to avoid inconsistencies and to promote compatibility between them. In this sense, a limited explanation is given here of some currently observed problems, together with possible progress, on the basis of the information contained in the more extensive article recently published as ÁLVAREZ TORNÉ, M., "Current issues in the protection of adults From the perspective of Private International Law, REEI, December 2016, No. 32, available at: http://www.reei.org/index.php/revista/num32/notas/current-issues-in-the-protectionof- adults-from-the-perspective-of-private-international-la

Does corruption relieve foreign investors of the burden of taxes and capital controls?

    No full text
In a sample of fourteen source countries making bilateral investments in forty five countries, the author finds that taxes, capital controls, and corruption, all have large, statistically significant negative effects on foreign investment. Moreover, there is no robust support in the data for the"efficient grease"hypothesis - that corruption helps attract foreign investment by reducing firms'tax burden and the irritant of capital controls.International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Capital Markets and Capital Flows,Decentralization,Fiscal&Monetary Policy,Economic Theory&Research,Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Governance Indicators,National Governance,Capital Flows

This article deals with Jean Miélot, famous author, translator, copyist, who was charged with “making books” for the Dukes of Burgundy between 1448 and 1470; it aims to update the bibliography of his activity (bilan, since 2010) and to suggest new “perspectives” for future research, particularly for critical editions of many of his works, still unpublished.

Inequality, fiscal capacity and the political regime: lessons from the post-communist transition

    No full text
Using panel data for twenty-seven post-communist economies between 1987-2003, we examine the nexus of relationships between inequality, fiscal capacity (defined as the ability to raise taxes efficiently) and the political regime. Investigating the impact of political reform we find that full political freedom is associated with lower levels of income inequality. Under more oligarchic (authoritarian) regimes, the level of inequality is conditioned by the state’s fiscal capacity. Specifically, oligarchic regimes with more developed fiscal systems are able to defend the prevailing vested interests at a lower cost in terms of social injustice. This empirical finding is consistent with the model developed by Acemoglu (2006). We also find that transition countries undertaking early macroeconomic stabilisation now enjoy lower levels of inequality; we confirm that education fosters equality and the suggestion of Commander et al (1999) that larger countries are prone to higher levels of inequality

Sexual/textual marginalities of Caribbean inspiration and origin a thesis on two texts by two women writers of Caribbean origin upon the theme of marginality

    No full text
This thesis is an exploration of the theme of Marginality in Writing by women of Caribbean origin. My work condensed itself into a specific analysis of two texts. Taken together, these texts focus the insights I researched into a significant whole. Each text was written by a woman of Caribbean origin, and their backgrounds are a symbolic polarity from each other. Jean Rhys was a white Creole born in Dominica in 1894 and who spent her adult life in England; Jamaica Kincaid is black, native to Antigua and now a journalist in New York. The protagonists of each text - Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid, and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys - are both young girls influenced by the image of their mothers. Significantly, they share almost the same name (Annie/Antoinette) which is also that of their mothers. Thus they become a symbolic fusion of a heroine of Caribbean origin. In the course of extensive and eclectic reading, I discovered the theme of Marginality to be entwined with the concept of Intertextuality. In separate chapters, I have discussed marginality with reference to narrative structure and narrative time, image and metaphor, culture (which involves colonialism in the Caribbean), race relations and gender (specifically feminist), and ultimately according to Susan Sontag's observation of the marginal literary subject: an unimportant 'work' ... could be a marvellous 'text’. Considering something as a 'text' means...precisely to suspend conventional evaluations. ... notions of 'text’ and 'textuality' charges the critic with the task of discarding worn-out meanings for fresh ones. I hope that in the course of my thesis, I have succeeded in the enlightenment of fresh meanings in Writing by women of Caribbean origin. I conclude that an understanding of the significance of these texts lies in the fact that their marginal quality is part of a total intertextuality
