    Ts’uu JaasG̲alang hlG̲aajuu : cedar sisters framework

    No full text
There is no framework for the analysis of Haida laws that is grounded in Haida culture. I take seriously the Haida worldview, the Haida conception of Tlgaa K̲’aaysguux̲an SG̲aanaG̲was (the Supernatural Realm), and SG̲aana K̲iidads (Supernatural Beings). From this perspective arises a framework based on the Cedar Tree, who in the Haida worldview, is an Ancient Sister called Ts’uu Jaasas. The conception of this framework was developed intuitively, drawing upon personal experience, knowledge about use of the Cedar Tree, and from observations of the biological functions of the Cedar Tree. I demonstrate the suitability of this framework primarily by drawing upon the ethnographic record of the Haida Nation, with a focus on the oral narratives contained in the work of John R. Swanton. He was an early ethnographer who recorded his work in the Haida language, worked with Hereditary Chiefs, and took the Supernatural Realm seriously. I used a quantitative method to examine the number of occurrences of the Cedar Tree in these narratives, which exceed all other species. I also draw upon oral narratives and teachings from my family, as well as observations of the Haida Nation’s articulation and exercise of Haida laws. These sources reveal that the Cedar Tree connects the land and sea, thereby rooting the framework in Haida Gwaii. This is a preliminary examination of Haida laws, pending further research with the Haida community

[[alternative]]To examine the strategies of National Alliance for rescuing Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest in Rescue Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest Movement by social marketing theory

    No full text
[[abstract]]The objectives of this reseach are to examine the strategies of National Alliance for Rescuing Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest(NARCFCF) in Rescue Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest Movement(RCFCFM) by social marketing theory, to understand its social marketing conditions, social marketing product objectives, social marketing strategies, and the control of social marketing plan. In the end, reseacher try to discuss whether RCFCFM was successful of not. After analyzing the history of RCFCFM, motivate-general-public period in 1998 December was the key period of RCFCFM between 1998 July and 1999 April. Therefore the motivate-general-public period of RCFCFM is the period that this research try to discuss its social marketing strategies. This research is aimed at figuring out the strategies of NARCFCF to stop the operations of collecting Formosan Cedar dead woods on Chi-lan Mountain, so it’s a case study. The research method of this study is mainly documentary analysis. Also, researcher interviewed the crews of NARCFCF. The documents of this research included meeting records, official documents, and news releases of NARCFCF, and newspaper reports. The main goal of RCFCFM between 1998 July and 1999 April is to stop the operations of collecting Formosan Cedar dead woods on Chi-lan Mountain. The social product objective of motivate-general-public period of RCFCFM was making the whole general public to rescue Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest. NARCFCF hoped the general public could stand for RCFCFM by signing their names and attending actions to show the desire of the citizenry to rescue Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest in order to stop the operations of collecting Formosan Cedar dead woods on Chi-lan Mountain. As far as the strategies of NARCFCF are concerned, when it comes to the target audience segment, NARCFCF adopted a mass marketing. When it comes to the marketing mix, the product was “Rescuing the most valuable Chi-lan Formosan Cedar Forest which can protect our life and which is the only left pure Formosan Cedar forest after years of lumbering”. After packaging its product appropriately and trying to reduce time inconvenience of the general public, NARCFCF used integrated marketing communication skills and distribution channels such as mass media, special media, and interpersonal communication. As far as the control of social marketing plan is concerned, NARCFCF had meetings once a week in motivate-general-public period of RCFCFM to examine the progress of rescuing actions and adjust actions according to the new opportunities and threats. From the contents of reports and articles on letters column of newspapers, and the general public and government respondences to RCFCFM, we can say that social markeitng outcome of motivate-general-public period of RCFCFM was good.

Analysis of Liquid Crystal Phase Behavior and Morphology via Polarized Optical Microscopy in Standard and Surface Aligned Observation Cells

    No full text
As the applications of liquid crystals continue to expand within the worlds of electronic displays, soft robotics, and elsewhere, understanding the phase behaviors and morphologies of liquid crystal systems has become increasingly in demand. One may gain insight into these characteristics by analyzing liquid crystal systems of varied chemical structures and lengths, across a range of analytical methods like polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Since no single analytical method can provide a holistic picture of liquid crystal phase behavior and morphology, expanding the scope of polarized optical microscopy by constructing aligned observation cells to observe monodomain liquid crystal alignment was a goal. In this work, liquid crystal monomers of varied molecular structures were successfully synthesized, and aligned observation cells were constructed so that successful monodomain alignment was observed through polarized optical microscopy. Moreover, evidence of organizationally complex dark conglomerate B4 phases was observed with polarized optical microscopy. Small scale structures, characterized by these phases, like nanocylinders, were then successfully imaged via scanning electron microscopy, pointing toward further analysis of liquid crystal systems of high complexity

Chironomidae (Diptera) of Cedar Bog, Champaign County, Ohio

Author Institution: Ohio Environmental Protection AgencyChironomidae (Diptera) were collected from Cedar Bog, Champaign County, OH. Cedar Bog is an alkaline fen formed by numerous springs that collect to form Cedar Run. An attempt was made to collect all life history stages and to rear late instar larvae and pupae under laboratory conditions. Ninety-six taxa were collected from the fen. Twelve taxa were recognized as new species. Taxa for which this study represent a significant range extension are: Bethbilbeckiafloridensis Fittkau & Murray, Paramerina smithae (Sublette), Radotanypus florens (Johannsen) n. comb., Odontomesa ferringtoni Saether, and Rheocricotopus (s.s.) effusoides Saether

Distribution Patterns of Diatoms in Cedar Run

Author Institution: Department of Botany, The Ohio State UniversityThe diatom communities of Cedar Run, Champaign County, Ohio were studied to determine their spatial and seasonal variation. Collections were obtained using glass slides as an artificial substratum and the diatom community was determined by identifying and counting approximately 1,000 valves on each slide. There were 190 diatom taxa identified, 82 of which were new records for Ohio. A multivariate analysis of the data resulted in unique clustering of points for each station, indicating a heterogeneous diatom assemblage in Cedar Run. Results were interpreted as indicating that areal effect on diatom community patterns masked that of seasonal influence in Cedar Run. A seasonal pattern was apparent when data for each station were considered separately from other stations

Writing through becoming, becoming through writing: The evolution of poems through 2022 and early 2023

    No full text
This CEDAR submission offers a window into the writing process. The working products of poems written between 2022 and 2023 are presented alongside their previous iterations, brainstorming sessions, and other forms of their originating material. The purpose of this exercise is to destigmatize drafting and to embrace the vulnerability of allowing the work to grow and change alongside the author
