Numerical investigation on the modal properties of slopes

    No full text
Earthquake-induced displacements of slopes are often evaluated through decoupled approaches combined with empirical relationships accounting for the characteristics of the input motion and the dynamic properties of the sliding mass. As per the latter point, recent studies highlighted the key role played by the system modal properties on the slope performance. Notwithstanding, the natural periods of the slope are commonly evaluated through over-simplified expressions relating to homogenous soil deposit with horizontal ground level. With the aim to provide a more realistic and comprehensive dynamic identification, this study presents a numerical investigation on the modal features of slopes with planar slip surface, implemented in the analysis framework OpenSees. The consideration of several slope geometries and mechanical properties point out i) the influence of the soil incompressibility, of particular interest under saturated conditions, and ii) effective ranges for the multiaxial modal periods and participation masses as a function of the soil stiffness. The results of the parametric study are finally used to derive a practice-oriented identification procedure of the modal features of slopes, as starting information for calibrating simplified numerical tools devoted to their large-scale assessment

Konsep diri dalam eksistensialisme Rollo May

    No full text
The main purpose of this research is to describe the concept of “self" according to Rollo May, by departing from the previous concepts of “self”, in this case, from the perspective of psychology and existentialism. The results of this study was found that existentialism is a practical philosophy that brings humans to understand life with self-awareness, and anxiety leads to individual awareness as a person who exists in the world. The author uses a qualitative literature method which focuses on one of Rollo May's books, Man's Search for Himself, and assisted by other works. So the first step of the writer describes the concept of “self” which came before Rollo May, then draws a common thread from previous theories, to search for areas that have not been touched, and arrive at the concept of the importance of awareness of “self” as an existing perso

La littérature de l’entre-deux et le regard sur la langue française. Enjeux linguistiques et identitaires dans l\u27oeuvre de Fouad Laroui

Fouad Laroui, a talented Moroccan author who writes in French and at times Dutch, is an exemplar of the in-between – in fact, the in-between-several-cultures. Like many Moroccans, he is “neither here nor there”. His original work, notable for the author’s dual belonging as well as its highly ironic vein, embodies multiple facets of multiculturalism, which he experienced during his youth at the French “lycée” in Casablanca, his trips to the western world (he now lives in Amsterdam) and through openness to European cultures. His stories in French are enriched with diverse references, resulting in a sort of patchwork – a jumble of words where the French language is present, but it is coloured by other languages and literary reminiscences (Laroui cited in Martin & Drevet 107).This article reflects on the author’s relationship with the French language and culture, by analysing the sense of identity and search for identity of his characters whose connections with France, and the western world, are marked by conflicting feelings, bearing traces of the Maghreb authors’ own sense of being torn. Is French an instrument of oppression or emancipation? The article focuses on two representative works, “Le jour où Malika ne s’est pas mariée” (2009) and “Une année chez les Français” (2010), set against the complex, multilingual backdrop of Morocco as discussed in his essay “Le drame linguistique marocain” (2011).Fouad Laroui, a talented Moroccan author who writes in French and at times Dutch, is an exemplar of the in-between – in fact, the in-between-several-cultures. Young men have always wanted to rush into print: a note on Denis Glover's writings on typography

    No full text
Denis Glover was a self-assessed expert on typography. This article reviews Glover’s education and training as a typographer and discusses his four accessible published articles. The article then assesses his contribution to the establishment of higher standards of type selection and use in the post-WWII period, particularly for book work. The 'new' typography he and others promoted is now the established typography.Lindsay Rollo, a retired one-time technical editor, is now an independent researcher.Correspondence about this article may be directed to the author at [email protected]</jats:p

    Glover’s and Fairburn’s Inklings

    No full text
Denis Glover and ARD Fairburn each contributed three items to the long defunct trade house magazine Inkling: 1947– 51. The significance of the publication to New Zealand printing industry is discussed. The influence of the two authors in proselytising improved client relations and adopting higher standards of typography is assessed in the context of the literary nationalism that emerged in the late 1930s. Inkling was also an important vehicle for the illustrator and cartoonist Robert Brett.Lindsay Rollo, a retired one-time technical editor, is now an independent researcher.Correspondence about this article may be directed to the author at [email protected]

Assessing Energy Consumption and Thermal Impact in IoT Edge Federated Learning

    No full text
Federated Learning (FL) enables distributed training of Machine Learning (ML) models directly on Edge Devices, preserving data privacy and reducing cloud dependency. This innovative approach is particularly valuable in Internet of Things (IoT)-aware pervasive environments, as Edge Computing enables low-latency and efficient decentralized learning. However, deploying FL on resource-constrained devices introduces several challenges related to energy consumption and thermal management. Many studies evaluate FL through simulations, often neglecting its actual hardware impact. This work proposes an experimental setup on real devices to fully assess the practical viability of Federated Learning on resource-constrained IoT edge devices. Specifically, we quantify the impact of FL on energy consumption, execution time, and thermal performance to provide recommendations for creating sustainable real-world Federated Learning settings. Our experimental setup utilises a portable USB meter and software monitoring tools to keep track of energy consumption and metrics such as execution time and device temperature. The Brain Tumor MRI dataset is used to implement a Healthcare domain FL scenario, where data privacy and energy consumption tracking are essential. This study aims to bridge the gap between theoretical FL simulations and real-world deployments by analyzing the impact of Federated Learning in IoT-edge devices. Training local ML models in FL scenarios relies on numerous mathematical operations leading to increased computational load and increased energy consumption. Our study identifies critical phases, such as idle periods between rounds and the final rounds as the model approaches convergence, that can be leveraged to implement adaptive thermal control mechanisms, and optimize energy consumption and contribute to sustainable IoT-driven FL
