How is Fashion Possible?: A Relational Analysis of Fashion as a Form of Social Life

    No full text
This paper explores how Georg Simmel's social theory responds to a wide theory on fashion as cultural product. It particularly focuses on some aspects in regard to "sociology of life" (Lebenssoziologie) within the sociological inquires in Georg Simmel's work. It finally binds Simmel's contribution on fashion to the wide sociological program and theory

Catalytic decomposition of carbon-based liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage materials for hydrogen generation under mild conditions

    No full text
The increasing demand of energy requires the development of sufficient and sustainable energy sources. However, the upcoming hydrogen economy is suffering from challenges which need to be solved. In this context, the search for liquid hydrogen storage materials and successful utilisation is crucial due to the high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen densities, easy recharging, low capital investment, and low potential risks. In this review, we survey the progress made in hydrogen generation from carbon-based liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage materials, focusing mainly on the catalytic decomposition of formic acid for hydrogen production

La metafora della visione e le origini del prospettivismo in Cusano

    No full text
Among the multiple uses of vision as a metaphor in the work of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464), this intervention focuses on those key places where his original elaboration of perspec-tivity and point of view, which accompany every gaze, is formulated. The universalization of the visual metaphor and its application to describe and elaborate the conception of knowl-edge, not only sensory but tout court, along with the elaboration of its angle and placement, entails the conscious extension of perspectivity to the entire human understanding. The point of view asserts itself as a metaphor through which to develop a reflection on the status of knowledge in general, the conditions and validity of knowing, and the relationship between subject and object. Based on this theoretical reflection, Cusanus seeks to propose a dialogical perspectivism, which finds one of its most speculatively fruitful points precisely in the use of the vision metaphor and aims to valorize the diversity and plurality of religions and culture

Imperial legacy and Cold War rationale: the Anglo-American diplomacy and the Falklands war in 1982

In 1982, Argentina – a country allied with the US during the Cold War through the Rio Pact – invaded and seized the Falkland Islands, a long-time Overseas Territory of the British Empire. Thatcher, the UK Prime Minister, vigorously responded and London regained the Islands. Thatcher was supported by a powerful nationalist commitment and in the end she was diplomatically and military backed by the US. However, this was not axiomatic. At that time, the Anglo-American “special relationship” appeared strong. Thatcher and US President Reagan shared the churchillian idea of the fraternal association between their countries, and this was a catalyst of their personal relationship. Anyway, from a political perspective, this friendship was not enough to align automatically London and Washington in 1982. The bipolar rationale of the Cold War imposed many strains on the war in the South Atlantic. Not only Argentina was an important US ally in its hemisphere, but the Monroe Doctrine was still a cornerstone of the American foreign policy. Neoconservatives such as Kirkpatrick strongly supported the need of preserving the US exclusive hand over the Western hemisphere. Eventually, the war required a very hard choice to be made by Washington. At the beginning, it tried to maintain a neutral position with the US Secretary of State Haig’s “shuttle diplomacy”. But this was not successful and Washington decided to stand side-by-side with London, by risking damaging its position in Latin America. This “US tilt” met many controversies inside the administration. The President, assisted by the Secretary of Defense Weinberger, played a decisive role to reach the final decision. In Britain, Thatcher was very disappointed by US initial ambiguity. Only after having obtained a clear support from the White House and having left behind the risk of a diplomatic storm, the relationship between London and Washington returned warm

Bioactive glass for periodontal regeneration: a systematic review

Abstract Background One of the major clinical challenges of this age could be represented by the possibility to obtain a complete regeneration of infrabony defects. Over the past few years, numerous materials and different approaches have been developed to obtain bone and periodontal healing. Among all biomaterials, bioglasses (BG) are one of the most interesting due to their ability to form a highly reactive carbonate hydroxyapatite layer. Our aim was to systematically review the literature on the use and capability of BG for the treatment of periodontal defects and to perform a meta-analysis of their efficacy. Methods A search of MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and DOSS was conducted in March 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using BG in the treatment of intrabony and furcation defects. Two reviewers selected the articles included in the study considering the inclusion criteria. The outcomes of interest were periodontal and bone regeneration in terms of decrease of probing depth (PD) and gain of clinical attachment level (CAL). A network meta-analysis (NMA) was fitted, according to the graph theory methodology, using a random effect model. Results Through the digital search, 46 citations were identified. After duplicate removal and screening process, 20 articles were included. All RCTs were retrieved and rated following the Risk of bias 2 scale, revealing several potential sources of bias. The meta-analysis focused on the evaluation at 6 months, with 12 eligible articles for PD and 10 for CAL. As regards the PD at 6 months, AUTOGENOUS CORTICAL BONE, BIOGLASS and PLATELET RICH FIBRIN were more efficacious than open flap debridement alone, with a statistically significant standardized mean difference (SMD) equal to -1.57, -1.06 and − 2.89, respectively. As to CAL at 6 months, the effect of BIOGLASS is reduced and no longer significant (SMD = -0.19, p-value = 0.4) and curiously PLATELET RICH FIBRIN was more efficacious than OFD (SMD =-4.13, p-value < 0.001) in CAL gain, but in indirect evidence. Conclusions The present review partially supports the clinical efficacy of BG in periodontal regeneration treatments for periodontal purposes. Indeed, the SMD of 0.5 to 1 in PD and CAL obtained with BG compared to OFD alone seem clinically insignificant even if it is statistically significant. Heterogeneity sources related to periodontal surgery are multiple, difficult to assess and likely hamper a quantitative assessment of BG efficacy

Following publication of the original article [1], the authors identified errors in the article title and in the author group. These errors have been updated with this correction. The article title “The largest European forest carbon stocks are in the Dinaric Alps old-growth forests: comparison of direct measurements and standardised approaches” was incorrectly written as “The largest European forest carbon sinks are in the Dinaric Alps old-growth forests: comparison of direct measurements and standardised approaches”. The given and family names of the authors “Alessia Bono, Giorgio Alberti, Roberta Berretti1, Milic Curovic, Vojislav Dukic and Renzo Motta” were incorrectly structured as “Bono Alessia, Alberti Giorgio, Berretti Roberta, Curovic Milic, Dukic Vojislav and Motta Renzo”. The original article has been corrected

A poética profanada de Waldo Motta

In this text, we intend to make some considerations about the literary project "sacred eroticism" of the poet from the state of Espírito Santo, Waldo Motta. The author\u27s condition of homosexual, poverty, and discrimination becomes the material for the edification of his lyrical doctrine, in which the sacred element, poetry, is transformed into the space of the profane homoaffective, thus promoting an "elevation" of homosexuality from the poetic and poetry.
