Le couple, un objet pour l’histoire des socialismes

    No full text
International audienceThis article seeks to show the relevance of the couple as a useful category of analysis to study the history of socialisms at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. After a short historiographical review of the couple formed by Louise and Jean Jaurès, it analyses the common features of various socialist couples active at the same time, including Georges Sorel and Marie David, Lalla and Émile Vandervelde, Albert and Madeleine Thomas, Marie-Thérèse and Fernand Maurette, Madeleine Vernet and Louis Tribier, Jean-Richard and Marguerite Bloch. Finally, this text puts into historical perspective the way in which socialists conceived the ideal couple in the 19th and 20th centuries, this question being far from unanimous on the left and the extreme left, between saint-simonians or libertarians in favour of a profound reform of the matrimonial institution and proudhonians or communists attached to maintaining the order of the home.

High Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies of Homogeneous Catalysts

    No full text
The design and testing of a nuclear magnetic resonance probe for studying homogeneous catalysts from -40\sp\circC to 100\sp\circC and pressures up to 4000 psi is described. Its significant features are a built-in stirring mechanism to mix the sample under study with reactive gases, and resolution and sensitivity comparable to that obtained in ambient-pressure probes without sample spinning. Well-known organometallic reactions are used to demonstrate the probe's capabilities.A rhodium catalyst for converting syngas to oxygenated organic compounds is examined in two solvent systems, sulfolane/4-methylmorpholine and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, leading to identification of rhodium carbonyl anionic clusters present at ambient and extreme conditions. Clusters fragmented much more easily in the former solvent, leading to a smaller distribution of clusters and more pronounced changes in the clusters present with temperature and pressure changes. Hydrido carbonyl anions, expected to be catalytically important as the source of activated hydrogen, were completely absent except for a trace of H\sb2Rh\sb (CO)\sb{24}\sp{3-}.Proton relaxation and site exchange processes in the metal clusters (μ\mu-H)\sb3M\sb3(CO)\sb9(\mu\sb3-CH)(M = Os,Ru) and (μ\mu-H)\sb2Os\sb3(CO)\sb (\mu-CH\sb2)/(\mu-H)Os\sb3(CO)\sb (\mu-CH\sb3) are also studied. From relaxation rates, nuclear Overhauser enhancements, and spin saturation transfer, the exchange rates, activation parameters, and interproton distances are calculated for these clusters; the latter are compared with neutron diffraction measurements in the first two compounds. For the methyl compound, whose structure has not been solved by diffraction methods, the NMR data support a structure very similar to that of the methylene.Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-15T23:19:09Z (GMT). The Unprecedented Reactivity of Ammine-Ligated Iridium Corroles

requirement mandating a six-month period of study in a foreign lab. During that time, we worked extensively on two main projects: one, the briefer, involved the development of an optimized synthesis of H3tpfc, and mostly acted as a facilitator of our inorganic research by allowing us to produce unprecedentedly large amounts of corrole at once; the other project, which will be discussed here, began with an idea for the development of high-valent nitridoiridium corroles and ended with the synthesis of a novel porphyrinoid molecule. Throughout the course of this research project, I was introduced to a number of new techniques, including the safe use of corrosive gasses (ammonia in particular) and a battery of 2D NMR experiments. Atif Mahammed, a postdoctoral fellow in Zeev Gross ’ lab, was instrumental in developing some of the initial synthetic procedures which eventually led us to the formation of our new porphyrinoids. Additionally, David Vandervelde and Scott Virgil, two Caltech staff scientists, contributed important expertise to the project. David introduced me to a number of useful 2D NMR experiments, and Scott allowed Theis to use his HPLC for a very long and messy separation. 7

Efforts toward rapid construction of the cortistatin A carbocyclic core via enyne-ene metathesis

    No full text
Our efforts toward the construction of the carbocylic core of cortistatin A via an enyne-ene metathesis are disclosed. Interestingly, an attempted S N2 inversion of a secondary mesylate in our five-membered D-ring piece gave a product with retention of stereochemistry. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.C. Synthesis of enantioenriched γ-quaternary cycloheptenones using a combined allylic alkylation/Stork–Danheiser approach: preparation of mono-, bi-, and tricyclic systems

    No full text
A general method for the synthesis of β-substituted and unsubstituted cycloheptenones bearing enantioenriched all-carbon γ-quaternary stereocenters is reported. Hydride or organometallic addition to a seven-membered ring vinylogous ester followed by finely tuned quenching parameters achieves elimination to the corresponding cycloheptenone. The resulting enones are elaborated to bi- and tricyclic compounds with potential for the preparation of non-natural analogs and whose structures are embedded in a number of cycloheptanoid natural products. This publication is based on work supported by Award No. KUS-11-006-02, made by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Bragging On Twitter Is So Annoying: How CEOs’ Social Media Self-Presentation Strategy, Auditor Thinking Style, and Auditor Experience Influence Auditor Judgment

    No full text
Following the SEC formally adopting Twitter and Facebook as disclosure outlets, existing research shows that investors respond positively to CEOs’ use of social media such that CEOs can strategically use social media to influence stakeholder behavior. While such strategies may be intended for investors and customers, auditors could voluntarily or under firm direction, be following clients on social media and thus also be influenced. In an experiment with 359 auditors from a national accounting firm as participants, I examine whether CEOs’ self-presentation strategy of modesty or bragging on social media influences auditors’ inventory obsolescence judgments and whether such effect differs based on an auditors’ disposition towards intuitive or analytical thinking and their experience level. I provide evidence that CEOs who present themselves as modest (brag) elicit positive (negative) feelings from auditors. I show that analytical thinking auditors, more so than intuitive thinkers use those positive (negative) feelings as information in their judgments. However, this impact of emotions on analytical thinking only results in less efficient and lower quality judgments for more experienced auditors. This is because intuitive effectiveness relies on domain relevant knowledge which less experienced auditors lack and thus, their judgments are more influenced by CEOs social media behavior. My results contribute to the emerging auditing literature examining the effects of clients’ social media activity and impact of thinking styles on auditor judgment. My findings have important implications for audit firms and regulators as they consider policies regarding auditors’ use of social media and professional skepticism.Embargo status: Restricted until 06/2027.
