Tragic Character on David Mills in Se7en by David Fincher (1995)

This research focuses on analyzing the characterization and tragic hero aspects of the main character, David Mills, in the movie Se7en (1995) directed by David Fincher. In literature, characterization plays a crucial role in shaping the audience’s perception of a character, while the tragic hero concept explores how a protagonist’s fatal flaw (hamartia) leads to downfall. The purposes of this research are: (1) to identify the characterization of David Mills based on Murphy’s (1972) theory, which includes nine methods of characterization; (2) to examine how David Mills fulfills the elements of a tragic hero based on Aristotle’s theory, such as hamartia, peripeteia, anagnorisis, and catharsis. The researcher employs a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis to explore the data in depth and answer the research questions. The results of this research show that there are 58 data findings related to David Mills’s characterization: seven data of personal description, nine data of character as seen by another, eight data of speech, five data of past life, four data of other people’s conversation, six data of reaction, seven data of direct comment, six data of thought, and six data of mannerisms. Furthermore, 24 data findings reveal David Mills as a tragic hero: eight data related to hamartia (recklessness, inability to control emotion, and overconfidence), five data of peripeteia (sudden reversal of fortune), four data of anagnorisis (moment of realization), and seven data of catharsis (emotional purgation experienced by the audience). The findings conclude that David Mills is depicted as a complex character whose personality traits both define his heroism and cause his downfall. His hamartia, combined with the moral challenges in the case he handles, drives the narrative toward tragedy. Therefore, the study reaffirms that characterization and the tragic hero framework are strongly interrelated in building emotional depth and dramatic tension in a film narrative.

Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis karakterisasi dan aspek pahlawan tragis pada tokoh utama, David Mills, dalam film Se7en (1995) karya David Fincher. Dalam kajian sastra, karakterisasi berperan penting dalam membentuk persepsi penonton terhadap tokoh, sedangkan konsep pahlawan tragis menyoroti bagaimana kelemahan fatal (hamartia) tokoh dapat membawa pada kejatuhan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) mengidentifikasi karakterisasi David Mills berdasarkan teori Murphy (1972) yang mencakup sembilan metode karakterisasi; (2) mengkaji bagaimana David Mills memenuhi unsur-unsur pahlawan tragis berdasarkan teori Aristoteles, seperti hamartia, peripeteia, anagnorisis, dan catharsis. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik analisis isi untuk mengungkap data secara mendalam dan menjawab rumusan masalah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 58 temuan data terkait karakterisasi David Mills: tujuh data deskripsi fisik (personal description), sembilan data karakter yang dilihat oleh tokoh lain, delapan data ujaran (speech), lima data latar belakang masa lalu, empat data percakapan tokoh lain, enam data reaksi, tujuh data komentar langsung, enam data pikiran (thought), dan enam data kebiasaan atau gerak-gerik (mannerisms). Selain itu, terdapat 24 temuan data yang menggambarkan David Mills sebagai pahlawan tragis: delapan data hamartia (sikap ceroboh, ketidakmampuan mengendalikan emosi, dan rasa percaya diri berlebihan), lima data peripeteia (pembalikan nasib secara tiba-tiba), empat data anagnorisis (momen kesadaran), dan tujuh data catharsis (pembebasan emosi yang dirasakan penonton). Kesimpulan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa David Mills merupakan tokoh kompleks yang sifat-sifat pribadinya sekaligus menjadi kekuatan dan penyebab kejatuhannya. Hamartia-nya, ditambah tantangan moral dalam kasus yang ditanganinya, mendorong alur cerita menuju tragedi. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa karakterisasi dan kerangka pahlawan tragis memiliki keterkaitan yang erat dalam membangun kedalaman emosi dan ketegangan dramatis dalam naratif film

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
